So Im here listening to 102.2fm and a song comes on, I havent heard it for ages, years. It reminded me of the summer I spent in New Jersey on J1 in 96.
What a great summer that was. The song was out at the time - cant remember the artist or title but I think its Nobody Knows. Its supposed to be a sad song but it always brings back really happy memories to me :)

    Whats your good memory song?

Madness " Baggie Trousers" and Stone Roses "Love Spreads" are two that spring to mind at the moment.

"Time of my Life" by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. I've never seen Dirty Dancing, and I'm a guy, so I'd probably hate it if I saw it anyway, but I remember dancing with a girl in a tight white blouse at a teen disco to that song. I think I was 12 and she was - oh my god - 13! Somehow the feeling has always stuck with me every time I've heard it!

I genuinely think "Umbrella" by Rihanna will stick with a lot of people, by the way. I haven't heard a song sung on the streets by gangs of drunken girls so much as that one. I think that says a lot!

'God save the Queen' (Sex Pistols) always reminds me of long hot summers.

'Mull of Kintyre' (Wings) reminds me of primary school.

'There must be an angel' (Eurythymics) reminds me of when I started earning 'real' money.

'Dancing queen' (ABBA) and 'Papa don't preach' (Madonna) always reminds me of old girlfriends.

'Cotton Eye Joe' (artist?) reminds me of Calcutta!

There must be an angel by Eurythmics reminds me of the time I was at a bouncing disco at a carnival in my cousins in galway and a boy bounced on my eye and i had a black eye for the rest of the summer.
Really they had a bouncing disco - it was cool. Like a bouncing castle but bigger, had a roof, all black inside with proper disco lights and blaring disco music. It was fun until that happened and I had to go back to my aunts. They were dreading telling my parents Id say !
Anyhow he Eurythmics song was in the charts at the time and it was always being played at the carnival and in the bouncing disco !

    Blondie - Maria

Westlife - If I let You Go

    Mauro Picotto - Iguana

Thin Lizzy - Still in Love With You

Iris (forget who sang that one)

Oh the list is absolutely endless, music can bring back so many happy thoughts and memories for me! :D (sad ones too but it's a brilliant feeling when a song comes on the radio that makes you feel all tingly right down to your toes and then you've to think *why?*)

I was working with friends up on a loft stacking sleeping bags as a volunteer on a kibbutz in Israel. It's a warm summers day and we are chatting and laughing and listening to the radio. Suddenly "Video killed the radio star" comes on and we all look up from what we're doing and before I know it we're all dancing to the radio, on a warm sunny loft, laughing our heads off.
    Good times :)

Airdance by Black Sabbath. Reminds me of sitting on the roof of a house in Bird Avenue with a few cans, enjoying the evening sun with the lads after a hard afternoon working on the restoriation of the house below.
There's got to be hundreds of songs though that instantly transport me back to another time and place. Particularly the teenage years, when the music was such an important part of life.

Wild Horses - The Rolling Stones

This one brings back memories of the morning after a house party. Me and a good friend volunteered to do the washing up and had the song playing. I don't know why but it's a very fond memory.

The Kids arn't allright : The Offspring.

Supposed to be a sort of somber song, but reminds me of good times with friends as a wee lad.

"Road Trippin'" by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Same, reminds me of my Rugby Tour to canada. Best 2ish weeks of my life. That album had just been released and we had it pretty much on repeat while on the bus driving around.

Iris- not so much a reminder of good times but more a reminder of the good laughs i had with a friend of mine who later got too close to a train.

aw man, i listened to that song for soooooooooo long... and then, soon to the time of my emigration i heard the lines
    Far away
This ship has taken me far away
    Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die

    Starlight
I will be chasing a starlight
Until the end of my life
I don't know if it's worth it anymore

    Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold you in my arms

and somehow, after months of knowing about what i was about to do, and about to give up, it suddenly hit me how much i had to lose... twas an absolutely terrifying time... but at the same time... it made me realise what i had to lose... and how much i didnt want to lose that... and i made my choice... in the longterm deciding on much more than you could ever have imagined when you started this thread.

"Fool's Gold" by the Stone Roses.
Constantly on the jukebox in the college local around '90-'91 and I never realised who it was; even though I was a big fan of their album (this song's not on it).

'Under Pressure' - Queen and David Bowie. Reminds me of a few years ago after a particularly great night out in Galway with friends. We woke on Sunday morning and were driving into town to go for lunchtime pints with this song on. Good times.

'Autumn Sweater' - Yo La Tengo. This will always remind me of the girl who introduced me to Yo La Tengo when I was in college. Great song - even better girl. Sadly she lives in another country now but the song always makes me happy.

Will Smith & DJ Jazzy Jeff - Tick Tick BOOM! Just reminds me of having mad craic as a kid. And later Men In Black.

Slight Return by The Bluetones reminds me of (not) doing my homework in secondary school and instead watching Top 30 Hits on Network 2, can't remember what year. Funny thing is, I was recently typing up stuff for my thesis and it came on the radio, seemed like a "look at me now" moment:)

those three cranberries songs, dreams linger and zombies. They were always played when i was a kid in my house. Under the boardwalk by the drifters too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,187 ✭✭✭Mrs_Doyle

Whenever I hear 'No Doubt', 'Don't Speak', it brings me back to my early teens.
It sounds a bit sad, but I was so hopeful then, and so positive about the future.I truly believed that anyone could be whatever they wanted to be, they only had to want it badly enough. That song makes me smile at my teenage self because I remember learning all the lyrics off by heart, and convincing myself that I could really relate to what was being said :D:D:D

    Green Day - Waiting
Perfectly seemed to sum up how I was feeling when I started going out with my first gf... I happened to be listening to the song a lot at the time as well, which adds a nice synchronicity to that memory!

Other songs that just seem to trigger fond memories and general nostalgic wistfulness, for various reasons:
    Pulp - Disco 2000
Sugarcult - Bouncing off the Walls
Bloc Party - I Still Remember
    Blur - Parklife
    Practically anything by Madness
Velvet Revolver - Loving the Alien
...loads more to boot, might post em up if they come back to me
