Well i know the US spicial forces dissagre with you on that one beacause when the M9 went into servise they kept the trusty old M1911.But of coarse everyone's diffrent so you have your prefrences that others dont not. Everbody is not the same and your allowed to have an opinion im just stating the facts and that is as a combat pistol the M9 is underpowered too heavy for it's caliber and not as affetive as a combat pistol should be like for instance the Glock.

The fact that they used it at all would suggest its a highly rated piece imo, as with all things in america though they will always prefer to go with their own. for obvious reasons the .45 is a more powerful piece but that really depends on what you want it for. In their case, they want it to be a man stopper and to cause as much damage as possible,
It doesnt strike me as a "this is better than that kinda decision", more of a "what is better suited to my requirements" one.

The main reason all the majour world armies switched is beacause it's 9mm and just like the 5.56 all the rest want to have common ammo thats the one and only reason the fact is combat pistols are ment to kill and the 9mm is very underpowered for this job where as the 45ACP is most of the time a one shot stop and not 10 shots to wound.

The switched to 9mm because it was NATO stantard if I'm not mistaken :).

Did I not read somewhere that the main reason the M9 was chosen over it's rivals in the trials was that Beretta agreed to open a facory in the US ? Or am I thinking of a different gun ?

Could be one of them but in the test trails back in the mid 80s it performed best out of a few different pistols such as the Sig,S&W,Walter,H&K and a few others, but a couple of years later they regreated that decision.

I wonder if they actually tested the Glock at the time?

The only reason most countries adopt a pistol is beacause they can get tousands of them for dirt cheap. The glock was an acception made to strict Austrian standards that is why it is such a good pistol unlike the M9 witch was picked from a bunch of pistols the americans liked the look of.

they picked the m9 for reliabilty and accuracy compared to other firearms in combat situations not firing ranges but actual combat situations and the army are still gung hoe about m9 the navy have given it some grief due to water related troubles (your not a navy seal till youve eaten italian steel) saying it was backfiring but i was born with an m9 and ill die with 1;)

That's right Shiva - though I believe there was also an issue over unit price - think that the Sig/HK options were cheaper per unit, but Beretta agreed to open a factory in the US and also agreed to some sort of mid life upgrade arrangement that meant that on paper at least it made financial sense. I stand open to correction though (as with Shiva this is hazy memory of reading somewhere - and my memory is very hazy...).

Here's an interesting read....The True Story of the M9

Personally speaking....I've fired a Sig 226 in 9mm, Walther P99 in 9mm and .40, Glock 17 in 9mm and a different Glock in .40 (I cant remember which model), and the M9 on a firing range. The Sig is as big and awkward as the M9, but much nicer to shoot. The P99 in .40 kicks like a bugger and although comfortable to hold and fire, I found it hard to control after 3 or 4 rounds. The Glock was almost perfect in both calibers, and the M9 was my least favourite. For what thats worth, which is pretty much nothing :)

    Mmm......m9 v glock(glock)
Some people say "If you can't beat them, join them". I say "If you can't beat them, beat them", because they will be expecting you to join them, so you will have the element of surprise.

In conclusion The M9 is the worst possible pistol any person or army could use and anybody that uses it would be better off using a paintball gun as its more relible it wont blow up in your face after 10,000 rounds and probley has more stopping power.

Movy guns dont have to be practical just go here and you will see how many times the M9 in peticular has clearly jammed and they just added gun affects. The reason the M9 is used in so many movies is beacause its very cheap to rent and so is the blank ammo.

Tis a rumor knockin around for a while now afaik :). I can't see them buying it. Google don't usually spend money to lose money. Bebo will most likely be gone by may, into the abyss of the interweb. I guess there'll probably be a mad dash by people to get all their photo's before it's gone.
