ok. just actualy watched the clip. We encountered similar opposition up in letterkenny when the gold club opened. i was workin there and some of the locals were up in arms and a local radio station took it upon themselves to have a programme about it!! Every caller seemed to have the same opinion, oh you can lose your house, your family WILL suffer, blah blah blah. I have to say, what about alcoholism etc..many people have died because of the effects of alcohol, families have suffered because of it and yet i cant remember the last time we have anyone calling for alcohol to be banned!!!

In the end the whole thing to me just sounds like hypocrisy! Not to mention blind prejudice! Nobody who was bad mouthing the place had ever even stepped foot in it!! I have spent my whole life with people talkin about my religous beliefs in a similar fashion. Just talkin about things that they know nothing about and in a negative manner!! I for one am tired of it.

At the end of the day adults should, in this day and age, be allowed to make their own choices regarding how they spend their free time and money. And until other more widespread issues are addressed in the same fashion it will all just stink of blind hypocrisy to me!!!

haha my dad made me watch this because right now (at the age of 15) i am playing poker in the house, but recently my brothers have been playing online and i just take like 5 dollars off em if i do something for them...one time i had 7.70 in my poker770 account (was free money) and i got it up to 100 and asked my brother (who is now in vegas and doing very well) to send me his neteller details...so when i wake up next morning, i find no details and play and i lost it all..tbh i think some sites on poker can seriously do some damage, i prefer to play tourneys or that where the person is beside you..nice interview btw..

A very one side show and I think its the reason all poker players should refuse to do anything with outside media org etc.

Darragh you came across fine, but people who dont understand what you do didnt understand it. I heard a few people make comments in work and after I told them exactly the correct and more realistic story. They just couldn't get there head around it. They always look at me as if I'm someone you'll lose my house in the long run, even do I could buy there house and still have money in the bank. They just dont understand.

As for gambling, I do have issues with people not been able to control there addictions. Its a pity and a great waste. But people are also have addictions to work or golf or football clubs, I've seen grown men lose there familys to work or golf etc.

I would love the public media to have a proper debate on gambling and understand the difference between horse's and game's of skill. I dont agree with 24 hrs betting on horse or casino's etc, but I think poker and board games have a place online. But thats a personal view.

tbh i think some sites on poker can seriously do some damage

    ?

What's the difference between one site and the other?they all offer the same things i.e cash games, MTTs, SNGs etc.

I thought Daragh came across very well but the problem is to the ignorant on the subject all they will have heard was re-inforcement that poker is just gambling.

I met up with a mate earlier on and one of his freinds who i had not met before was with him and knows i play poker alot. He asked if i had seen the show on primetime. At this stage i had not so he took to recounting an interview with this guy who had told how he won 20K one day but most days loses like 10k !! I knew Daragh was doing the interview so i was kinda puzzled .... i just nodded and moved the subject on to the impending match :)

Maybe its cause i tend to shy away from arguments with people on subjects i feel they don't understand. I have never got why everyone is so keen to change peoples attitudes towards poker ? I say ignorance is bliss so leave them that way.

    Opr

How much more did you say to them HJ, or did they show it all?
I kind of got the impression that they were trying to show that even if you're successful, it's really unsteady (and maybe it is), i.e. up 20k one day, down 10k the next, etc.
I would assume your results are much steadier than that on average.

Yeah the next thing I said was that they were totally out of the ordinary (the win included 2 big tournament cashes) and my months results tend to be around the same mark

The one problem, is that there are people who are stupid enough to lose their families nest egg in one night. I personally know of someone who mortgaged the house and lost it all at internet poker. The same person then killed himself. I didn't know him personally but he was well known to some of my colleagues at work. Irish as well by the way.
And as long as there are people like that around, there are going to be a lot of anti internet gambling/poker voices. Its just a fact of life. You see if a member of a family does something so severe, then you have four or five immediate relatives who are going to look for something to be done about internet gambling/poker. Just lets say one of these people is a 15 year old girl who's best friends father is a fianna fail td or journalist, well now you have a government/media voice against internet gambling/poker. You know the story, he was such a nice guy, he loved his family, never did a thing wrong in his life until this bleeping internet gambling came along.
And of course, those conservative people who don't like change, such as the internet, or cd's, dvd's, ipods or whatever are just ready to believe the evils of internet gambling/poker and repeat it to their friends and then it gets to another home where daddy tells his 18 year old leaving cert son that he will never have the internet while he is living under his roof.
    Its just a vicious circle.

Thank you for reading this, i laughed my way through it. But thats just life as i see it. I would personally agree with an earlier post that if someone is to be interviewed they should dress like marcel luske, act like howard lederer and proudly wear a daffodil for cancer or something like that. Dont ever spill any figures. That was the big mistake with this interview. 'I have won 20,000 in a week and lost 10k in a week'. the public are not ready for these figures.
