Oh how I wish Contipome had kicked one of those penalties?

Edit: on account of the bonus point situation

Bad, especially with France getting bonus point.
If we lose to France, we better make sure we get a bonus to be in with a chance of qualifying! It's kind of complicated now.

Not sure how much it matters, If we have idea's about winning this, we'll need to beat both anyway.

Would have been better if france had not got the bonus point, but now all depends how they come back from this loss. Makes it a lot more complicated figuring out the various options now though.

    we are fcuked!

how come france can always conjure up a last minute try against us?

    Very true!

But how often have we been on the recieving end of French revenge (or to coin a phrase which I hate 'backlash')

we let them...argies didnt...france werent on form to day in my opinion...they played good like, but iv seen them play alot better...

There is a bonus point for 4 tries scored in a game,so am i right in saying if we score 8 tries we will get 2 bonus points,or can you only get 1 bonus point - once you score 4 tries or more?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,249 ✭✭✭Stev_o

Take trimble of the win put murphy on there and make sure him and dempsey catch everything. If the Pumas start running the ball take murphy off and bring on Trimble. This performance shows us that the Puma pack will be extremely and i mean extremely dangerous for our pack. We have to go out and play very very fast rugby get it to the wing and have 2 men in support 1 man in support isnt good enough the Pumas will probably turn it over

Theres only one bonus point available for a team per game! 4 tries, or lose by 7 or less points,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 348 ✭✭nedward

Good result for rugby and the World Cup methinks

We can definitely do a number on the Argies' lineout, but at least we have the advantage of being able to see the Argies coming

In my opinion the Pumas won the mental battle. I think of the top of my head i think the Pumas missed oh i think 6 or 7 tackles maybe less not sure this is just of the top of my head. Now the big thing here is that when the French attacked they got turned over and not get any points from the attack. The Irish pack better get practicing cause the Argies are going to come down hard on them

    right lads! (and lasses..)

    Calm down.....
The french have shown many weaknesses.. many of which we can capitalise on..

We've also seen that the Argies can really put it up to anyone, they were very impressive tonight,. but they played out of their skins and imo have no trump card left to play. They did everything they could to win tonight.. and have shown us all there strengths and weaknesess.. We need to play a game that will expose these..

Let's give them no room to play the kicking game, take it up the middle, pick and drive, roll off the maul and challenge their (very weak) lineouts.

Its not really knee jerk. It is technically the worst possible result from out viewpoint.
Its not all-important as the rest is all in our hands, but it still is the worst result.

Can you not get the two? The try scoring bonus point and the losing bonus point.

just edited the title as there are a few people who might be out pinting and recording the game.

I think it is a bad result for us...altho if we beat france it means we are defo thru

Yeh i woulda thought you can get 2 bonus points ie. scoring 4 tries and losing by 7 or less.

There doesnt seem to be anything in the rules saying you can only get 1 bonus point.

Whaaa? and you mean extremely - we're all scared. Let's face it Ireland are finished, they'll go home early after losing to France - even if they beat the argies- they'll go home cos of bonus points

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,544 ✭✭✭✭Supercell

One thing is for sure - the frenchies are going to be a very different and determined team on the night against us.

That said the french croud are notorious, if we can start like the argies and put up some poits on the board the croud may go against them..

Its definately a better situation imho than if the frencies had won.

The argies cannot kick, the frenchies cannot kick..if Ireland are disciplined we'll win by the penalty kick.

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,708 ✭✭✭Erin Go Brath

We have to do the biz against the big two:

If France beat Ireland, and Ireland beat Argentina (which is how i'd call both those games). Then all 3 teams are headed towards the same points total, with bonus points providing the finishing positions.

If we don't get minimum of a bonus point against France I honestly don't see how we are going to get out of this group! The only way obviously, going to town against the Argies!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 348 ✭✭nedward

Maybe this result was as a consequence of France's pre tournament friendlies, playing three weeks in a row. Argentina only played one Test in the buildup, and kept their moves (and powder) dry.

    Argentina certainly looked fresher.

True but remember that the Pumas played too scrappy matches were France played 3 stormers. So in one way France were lured into a false mental state that the didnt need to fear the Pumas.

Now i know no one will believe me but i knew the Pumas would win during the anthems. It reminded me alot of what happened with us against England at Croker

As soon as the Argentinian hooker kicked a delicate chip into touch I knew France were not going to win. What a half back pairing the Argies have, one would think Hernandez plays there all the time and with Contepomi outside them as an extra kicking or running option, man I am scared s**tless about our chances. Our tactics should be give the ball to Hickie and BOD and injure Pichot somehow.

In fairness France didnt get any chance to show any moves or anything.

They conceded an intercept try and Heymans had a mare.

Argentina got alot of the 50-50 decisions.

France can be the worst team in the world if they want.

They wont ever be that bad again.

They will bring Poitreanud back in and maybe start Chabal.

No, just one bonus point per team available, 1 point for either 4 tries, or loosing by 7 or less but not points for both.

If teams finish on the same points it comes down to how each did against each other. Complicated if France beat Ireland, Ireland beat Argentina, and Argentina beat France. It then come down to points difference. IE Racking up a cricket score against the minnows could be the decider.

Good points, but I don't think Argentina got the fifty-fifties, if anything France got away with some rucking on the side.

    .

Without sounding rude,do you have that from an official source like the RWC website or IRB,not that i dont believe you, just want to know,as it could be the difference between qualifying and not.

Just the way the AIL works you can get 2 bonus points,i know this is not the AIL ,but you know what i mean.

Pff.. I knew well before then :p

The bonus point for France is a bit of a balls.. but leaving our final two group games to one side - it's essential that we get maximum points from Namibia and Georgia and hope that either of them can run the Argies close and stop them from getting a bonus..

Like a previous poster.. I see us losing to France and beating Argentina - so the bonus points are really going to be important.. I don't think there's all that much to worry about..

I stand to be corrected on this but in the Guinness Premiership you can lose by less than 7 while at the same time scoring 4 tries and you get 2 points. I presume the same applies in the World Cup. In addition, it doesn't matter a bolix what tonights result was for us. We haven't even kicked a ball yet, how could our chances be diminished. The initial objective was to beat France and Argentina. That is still the objective.

To be honest i dont think they. They ran alot in the Wales match for the 30 minutes they played. I just think that they knew that the Garryowens were working and they were getting points from them so why change style when your coming off with the points?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 778 ✭✭✭dubal

anyhow, girv has cemented his place after all them garryowens, bet there will be none with him playing

I still wouldnt be entirely convinced by Hernandez at flyhalf- in the 2nd half and as the game went on he seemed a bit tactically naieve kicking alot of possession away but France didnt really take advantage of it.

Think if its close between Ireland and Argie with 20 mins to go,he might cost them with some poor decisions

Well I think it's already been discussed on the forum that there is a possibility of 2 bonus points...
The following number of Match points will be awarded for each pool phase Match:

    Win 4 points
    Draw 2 points
4 or more tries 1 point
Loss by 7 points or less 1 point

    From here... http://www.rugbyworldcup.com/home/rules/index.html

Same as the Super 14 point system - where it's possible to get 2 points from a loss..

Meh ud be surprised id say they might target trimble for the garry's if they decide he ll be the target for them or if Dempsey starts getting a battering they might fire a few at him you never know

You might be right there. I think I'll have to backtrack. :o

Certainly seems unfair that a team can lose and still get 2 points, the same as a draw. I can't say I agree with that rule at all.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭JC 2K3

No reason for some of you to be so negative. I thought Argentina looked pretty beatable from our PoV, and I can't see us losing to France by over 7 points.

    Win 4 points
    Draw 2 points
4 or more tries 1 point
Loss by 7 points or less 1 point

That seems to imply 2 points are possible.
If at the completion of the pool phase two or more Teams are level on Match points,
then the following criteria shall be used in the following order until one of the Teams
can be determined as the higher ranked:

    i. The winner of the Match in which the two tied Teams have played each other
    shall be the higher ranked;

ii. The Team which has the best difference between points scored for and points
    scored against in all its pool Matches shall be the higher ranked;

iii. The Team which has the best difference between tries scored for and tries
    scored against in all its pool Matches shall be the higher ranked;

iv. The Team which has scored most points in all its pool Matches shall be the
    higher ranked;

    v. The Team which has scored most tries in all its pool Matches shall be the
    higher ranked;

vi. Should the tie be unresolved at the conclusion of steps (i) through (v), the Team
that is higher ranked in the updated Official IRB World Rankings on October 1,
    2007.

Thought I'd stick this here too...

Could be interesting come the end of the group.

Well i think if they manage to score 4 tries, they surely must be playing good attacking rugby,so arguably deserve a bonus point for pleasing the eye.

The only team i could maybe see score 4 tries and lose by 7 or less and get 2 bonus points is Wales and maybe Ireland.
