    So, societies discussion anyone?

Still a month to go, so haven't thought about it. I'll see what takes my fancy in FW. This dancing lark may be interesting. 9:1 you say?

Are there any new societies this year, does anyone know?

Also, for existing members, you don't need to rejoin the Phil as membership is 4 years (assuming you're of the 96% of the membership that bought the goldcard membership).

    Gold card?

My card last year was black....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 709 ✭✭✭wowy

Yeah that's the one. Gold writing, I think, I can't really remember, but regardless that's the 4 year membership.

You certainly don't need to rejoin if you have the four year membership. They should take your card but they also have a database with everyone's details on it if the situation is dubious in any way. I remember giving people scraps of paper with "IOU 1 Phil Membership Card" and my signature on it last year. The database is all that matters.

What do the maths soc do?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,597 ✭✭✭dan719

Maths.:D No they organise lectures on topics relevant to Mathsoc, have a fine library and also have a twenty four hour common room 'with couches and a constant supply of boiling water for tea and coffee'.

Couches and water for coffee? I'm joining mathsoc!

I sure hope liking maths is optional....

Is there a "Get-Drunk-And-Let-The-Fananator-Sleep-On-The-Floor" Society? Because if not, there should be!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,881 ✭✭✭Kurtosis

The Mathsoc are a great bunch. All very hospitable and I highly approve of their baked goods themed events (e.g. Donut Reception, Pi Eating Contest). Also, a friend of mine is on the committee :D

    So in summary, Mathsoc +1

In fairness most societies will offer freebies like this. So join something you are interested in. Even if you don't think you are definitely going to do it. The best thing I ever found in Mathsoc was a Koran in their library, so it gets my seal of approval.

Of course, wearing my CSC Treasurer hat, I urge everyone to hand over as much of their hard-earned to societies as possible ;)

Does digital art/3D come in under computer science or...?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,452 ✭✭✭Time Magazine

I doubt it paperclip, but it might fall under Digital Art :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 561 ✭✭✭paperclip

Cruel irony: The digital art there refers to the digital art of the music kind....

Why can I never find any amazing illustrators in our fine republic to share some wine and witty repartee with? Actually, just someone that I could gaze at while they're drawing would be fine. I'm thinking someone along the lines of Simon Dominic Brewer or Torsten Wolber.... BUT THEY ARE NOT TO BE FOUND ON THIS SIDE OF THE IRISH SEA!
Not that the wine wouldn't be nice also...

I'm excited- TCD Publications is having my illustration on the front of their brochure, currently being sent out to hundreds of first years. :)
