    See thread title.

I'm joining the sign language club (re-joining really, since I'm the secretary this year) and I'm the illustrator for the trinity news. I'm also sort of thinking of joining the harriers, but they run a little too competitively for my liking...

    How about you?

I hope I'll finally get to play tennis again.

Final year this year (sob!) so I won't have much time for societies methinks.

I don't know which societies I'll be joinong but I do know which sports clubs!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,452 ✭✭✭Time Magazine

In the non-cliquey "outside world", sports clubs can still be classed as societies.

Trevor West must here of this!!
He will put an end to your societies!

To answer the quesetion; DURC, Phist, DanceSoc.
As I am also in Final year (hasn't really hit me yet), I doubt I'll have much time for anything else.

I will probably have yet another membership to the mighty DURNS, home of granite and other forms of rock.

Oh, christ, where to start? Hist/Phil, obviously, then Ultimate Frisbee, paintball and LGBT. Then there's Sci-Fi, TFM, Rifle Club, I'll probably be made to join Comedy Soc as well, I usually join the Greens (and this year I might even participate!), and then there'll be at least one or two others that I sign up to on a whim or get cajoled into joining through knowing someone on the stand. I thought you were supposed to outgrow the "Must join every society in sight!" impulse in first year?

I see it more as a 'Look what freebies I can get for 2 euro!' impulse. Speaking of which, I'll be helping out at the D.U publications stand, so I get a free Tshirt! Woohoo! ( This should probably go in the woohoo thread, but I live on the wild side.)

Well considering I've been a member of the RUFC for as long as Ian there, I might rejoin that apart from that who knows, maybe boxing, a martial art, and surfing or the like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,024 ✭✭✭Awayindahils

Hist/Phil, Paintball, Tfm, Comedy Soc, SVDP, LitSoc, SciFi, LGBT though my list was only this long last year and i joined way more.

    hmmm...

SU and Comedy Soc and possibly a hist tshirt for me.

None. Though, depending on whether I'll have a job by then, I'll see if I'll wander in and tut tut about how people are looking younger each year (in a typical old codger role).

Oh and for any noobies to Trinity...

Sign language sounds interesting actually, I've flicked through an ISL dictionary a good few times but never really learned much. Looking through the list, I'm tempted to do the traditional fresher thing of signing up for as many clubs as possible :)

As the secretary, I can heartily recommend joining. It's great value, you learn a lot during the year, there are classes every monday and tuesday so you can pick the day of the week you go on. Also, learning another language and going to the deaf club (if you so choose) is fascinating- it's another culture altogether within Ireland.

Plus, you can't really learn sign language from books and you'll never have classes offered at such a cheap rate, so may as well.... I'll see you at the stand on fresher's monday, OK?

Definately Ultimate Frisbee. Probably everything else I have money for  I might even go to some of them this year!

I split paperclip's (very off topic post) on myth's suggestion, to this new thread. We usually frown on society pimping, but I realise people can't help it.... so might as well contain it.

I'm the webmaster of DU physoc, if you want to know how bad it needs a webmaster, have a looky here: http://www.duphysoc.org

I mean come on: "menu option 1"???

I'll get onto that job in september.

The PHYSOC has free brownies when you join.... We basically get guest speakers like Senior NASA scientists etc. Most talks are accessible to public understanding. Every talk is followed by a "reception".

Is there a list of all the societies somewhere?

    Mark Steacy's looking well.

I must admit that the PhySoc brownies are fantastic (and no, I'm not involved).

I listed the socities in the other page...

Comedy will be excellent - i've been touring around comedy clubs in the last month or so getting names and numbers, and some have even been related to comedy ;)

oh, and if you're doing CS, engineering, or just have an interest, join the computer science society.

We'll be doing talks, drinks, tutorial (including some stuff in the new XNA lab in trinity - thats dev stuff for pc and xbox360 - if I get my way ;)) and was in contact with some guys in UCD about an inter-university game off. which could be fun if we get it up and running - so yes, join!

as for me, i'll probably do the same thing I did last year - join nothing, go to everything ;)

No, but you need to not be associated with the RA or a criminal in any otehr way. Garda background check on all members.

Oh course, but I do remember hearing rumours about not being allowed to join both before, which obviously I think are complete crap, but again I'm curious.

The gardi can block you for any reason they like. So before the freedom of information act, it wouldn't surprise me that people where stop due to membership of sinn fein.

Defo should join Trinity FM - Best Medium Society last year. It's absolutely great craic.

Check out www.analoguemagazine.com while you're at it.

What sort of things can be done in Trinity FM?

They have a licence to broadcast about four weeks a year. They make d'radio talk.

It's kinda like me playing with my iPod and FM Transmitter, only T:FM goes about 35 feet instead of 30.

What he said, only we also stream online (which is where most listeners will be).

Definitely worth signing up for. We'll be on air during Freshers' Week, so be sure to look really interested and ask lots of questions and we'll bring you up to see the studio in action.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18 Analogue

Well actually Trinity FM broadcasts 6 weeks per year. Also TFM broadcasts approximately 2 miles and 35 feet if you want to be smart about it. The majority of TFM's airplay is made up of music, interviews and live in-studio performances. Last year went pretty well in that respect; David Kitt, Republic of Loose, the Immediate, Director, Messiah J & the Expert all stopped by the studio.

Not a chance Bren, certainly not consistently. I've had trouble picking it up beyond the Hamilton. Other days I've picked up a faint whisper almost as far as Dun Laoghaire. I reckon it probably depends on the weather, but generally anywhere near town should be able to pick it up.

Nope - all equipment is provided. Rifle, pellets/rounds, targets, glove, and of course expert tuition.
    I'll join:
Rifle Club - because they're the best sport club on campus. And their website is awesome.

DUCSS - because they're the best society on campus. And their website is awesome.

The phil - because they have interesting stuff on, and they feed me during freshers week.
The hist - because I wish I joined last year.
    Swimming club - maybe.

Implode? Kinda like the time that (insert other blown out of proportion comment about something that is exaggerated to the point of extremism).

    Don't over-react.

There was something going on, committee politics, that I didn't really care about. That's the implosion?

I just thought they had some cool debates.

In the off chance that you were referring to being a member of Sinn Fein and being a member of DURC - there is no problem.

You cannot join DURC and be a member of a proscribed organisation, and while I don't agree with the sinners, they are not a proscribed information.

Is there a Sinn Fein Soc this year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

As far as I know yes. I'm not sure what happened after that whole "Chair sending out dodgy stuff over email list" incident when they lost their rooms for 6 months though.

Erm, any hetrosexual guy with a clue joins the dance soc. Pretty and attractive women outnumber guys like 5 to one. Dancing is usually held on a friday night. If I have time I'll be going again this year.

Btw its a mix of dance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

Yeah, I never got around to joining dance soc - might join this year, with the intention being I may be able to actually waltz by the time the strauss ball comes around :)
