Depends. There are obviously places in each country that are better than places in the other. Overall, I'd say the US wins in that the nicer places are probably better than Ireland's nicer places. I'd just ignore the newspapers and media while i was there.

Ireland, too many Americans in the US (why I'm here..I do not know :(). I still have a house back in Ireland that I can go back to when I want. If you can put up with the tripe on telly as mentioned by Exit, then you'll be grand. Property prices are quite tasty where I am also and quality of life is better but depends what is important to you.
Americans I know are pretty ****e for embracing anything else outside of their own world.

for starts, hurling and gaa are infinitely better than american football or baseball...

less religious nuts, bertie > bush, better accents, not to mention history and culture, have our own language, it's a prettier country, less OTT, better sense of humour (look at all the yanks who fail to recognise the comic genius that is father ted)...

for all that our weather is shít, look at stuff like hurricane katrina, and twisters, we've pissed off less terrorist organisations, drinking age..

hm.... im sure ill think of more.
im moving in a coupla months (check sig for exact amount of time) nad i know im gonna miss ireland like crazy.

Depends on where in the U.S. I guess.. it's a much more varied place than little ole Ireland! I'd love to spend some time in Vermont actually.. kinda like Ireland but with Snowboarding and Guns. ;D

Ireland for some things, like natural beauty, education system, etc.
America is great for a lot of things, though. weather, shopping, roads... even though the police may be a bit OTT, atleast they fking react to things :/

Mixed bag from the posters above me.

I propose a compromise, whereby the cream of both countries is taken, and mixed thoroughly. Thus, we become neither Yank nor Paddy...but a Padanky-mating the humour/swearing/loveablity of the Irish with the optimism/lack of begrudgery (compared to some Irish)/hipness of the Amercans.

I propose we cordon off counties Kerry (God's Kingdom;) ), Cork and Waterford, and use a few thermonucleur devices to severe us a new tectonic plate, and off we go...away from begrudgery, misery and bad teeth!!!

I'd be aiming for us to end up off the coast of California or Jamaica where the weather is rather nice, methinks.

Whoever is with me must acccept that I will be their benevolent leader and that I get the pick of the choicest concubines.:p

I am an American in Ireland, but there are alot of things from home I miss. Weather is number one, alot of the food back home is awesome!! In Ireland tho is much better pay and the health system is wonderful here. So there is good and bad in both the places. But if I could I would be living in the US right now, just waiting for husband to retire so we can get the f*** out of here!! LOL

I live in America for part of the year before going back to Ireland. By the end I always miss home and think I want to jet off and never come back. But when it's time to fly off to California I can't wait to get out of the kip. I think when you're away you appreciate things from home more and don't take them for granted as much. But you also take some of the negatives for granted too when you've been gone. It also works the other way. After my stay back home I start to appreciate some of the positives of living in America ... California specifically. I think Californians are more laid back, more open minded, and generally better educated than what you'd typically find in Middle America/The Bible Belt so they're easier tolerate. But I'll never get used to the way milk tastes in America. I've adjusted enough to where it's quaffable but still not a patch on home.

Funny you should say that, I know a Canadian who much prefers life here she loves it. And I know a pure Irish guy who has made a successful life in Canada and loves it there. I guess they were both lucky enough to explore and find where they were most happy and comfortable.

*Edit:Saying that I remember a guy I worked with was asked the same question, as he had travelled a bit, he just replied 'doesn't matter where you are, life is what you make it'. Good answer I think.

Ireland's education and health system are streets ahead of the US. Despite our failings in these areas, you would have to fork out huge amounts for decent education (probably from high school onwards) and health insurance. Here, we've free education, a public health system and affordable health insurance.

Our benefits system is way ahead of theirs also - unemployment benefit, affordable housing etc etc. Sometimes I wish we didn't give so much though, when I see decent taxpayers struggling with a mortgage while the unemployed couple with 4 kids get a council house & every benefit going.

This is not to say America hasn't a lot going for it. Better infrastructure, diversity of lifestyle, better weather (mostly), cheaper cost of living (mostly) and lots more than I'm too tired to think about!

For me, it's America for a holiday, but Ireland to live. That's just between those two. I'm sure I could live many other places in the world given the chance.

    Ireland's a ****e hole, but it's home.

the whole time I was in canada I was bitching about the place, cursing the fact that I had to go back.. but as soon as I stepped foot in dublin airport and got on the bus to dublin city centre... I just felt all.. zen or something

Ireland for everything apart from these 2 thing... America invented Jack Daniels , they invented Coca-Cola... they put the 2 together, Uh-ho-ho-hoh! They're some thinking people!

Likewise! Does she play rugby by any chance?

Back OT: America is such a huge country with so many different types of lifestyles / environments, people usually have very different experiences in mind when they talk about it. Even in Ireland, someone will have a very different experience living on the Dingle peninsula from living in centre city Dublin ... and the extremes in America are much greater.

Personally, I find the worst thing about Ireland is the bloody weather, especially this year ... but if I had the option to move I think I would be more inclined to head towards the Med area than towards America.

Farohar- far as Im aware the US hasnt had conscription since the late 60s. Anyone in Iraq is either in a woeful economic state or a gob****e to fight a very dangerous war for not much above minimum wage when private security men from the west are pulling in a grand per week for moderately less dangerous work.

Anyway, here deffo. Of all the places in the world id like to visit the US doesnt rate too highly. Mainly because my mate lived in a flat block full of young American birds studying here, frequently met them at house parties. One or two were bang on and sound, but **** most of them were about as much of a laugh as an orphange fire. His American ex once threw us all out of his birthday party for getting a bit locked and belting out the lyrics of Jay Z and LP Encore :D

I dunno, id hope that New York/Jersey is full of Adriana from the Soprano types in terms of look, attitude and accent but any i ever met over here were largely a bunch of loudmouth kunty rich kids with no sense of having a laugh.

And the names, jaysus. Mary-Beth, Mary-Louise, Mary-Jane.....ffs when theyre expecting a kid the parents in the WASP families really ought to get a babies name suggestion book printed sometime after 1870

    Hey all,

I'm in Beverly Hills on a 3 week holiday at the moment...and I'd pack up shop at home and move here in a heartbeat. Living costs are waaay cheaper, guaranteed sunshine everyday, etc etc etc!!!

I think most people would, until they visit their neighbourhood real estate agent who quotes and 8 figure sum.

People who decide they want to live somewhere after being there on holidays are a bit naive. Of course you loved it, you weren't working, you were arsing around shopping and eating in restaurants every day with no responsibilities and no dealings with any public service. It's bound to be a great place then!

Sorry, thought they still had the requirement for 6 months military service/12months civic service (if you can give a decent excuse other than "I don't want to die"). Good to know they have copped on a little in the last 40 years so.

If I could afford it (somehow!) I'd live in Manhattan in a heartbeat. I've been in much of the States and some of the spots were great (such as San Fransisco, Chicago and New York).

I like Irreland, but I don't think there is much I would miss.

Males have to sign up with the "selective service" when they're 17 or 18. It's a formality though since there's no longer a draft on the books

the weather in Ireland is "damp" but the temps are moderate. Most places in the US have a wide fluctuation. NYC for example can be below freezing in january and 95*f and humid in the summer. I live in austin, texas. We get 3 weeks of "winter" here. We also get about 2-3 months of 95-100*f summers. Anyone with fair skin that doesn't protect themselves are in for definite skin cancer over the long term

Our neutrality for one. Our not being led by a gun-toting, bible-bashing red-neck lunatic for two.
    I could go on..

I would have to say Ireland.

I have been living in the US for the past 18 months and it has many advantages like good weather, better wages in IT anyways etc.

But Ireland has a better Education system, better healthcare, better benefits for parents with children etc. Thats important once you start a family.

It all depends on what you want out of life. I will have a young baby coming into the world in 8 weeks so if everything goes right it will be back to ireland next summer.

pvt. joker - if you figure out how to move over here, lemme know. My girlfriend is a yank, her visa here expires soon and we're at a loss to figure out how she's gonna be able to stay.

On topic, I don't think I could live in the US - there are many great things about the place but the freaky over-the-top oppressive government puts me right off. I'll be visiting the place for the first time in a few weeks, I guess I can make a judgement then.

To be honest the whole America argument is better or worse than Ireland is nonsense. America is huge. Far bigger in every way than Ireland. You can't take it as one place. Better off comparing a state to Ireland. Even at that it would have to be a smaller state. I mean weather? Florida and California would destroy us on weather. But Seattle would have similar weather to Ireland so you wouldn't be missing much.

Also Americans aren't as "ignorant" as many people in Ireland believe and I think it's hilarious when people say Bush is stupid lolol!!... nutcase Americans etc. In fact in many ways parts of America would have a similar mentality to us. He does have an approval rating of 30% in the states so... and Ireland have elected bad politicians in the past. He will be gone in 2008 and replaced by either Obama or Clinton both of which look solid.

I love a good debate or rivalry on between countries. However you would have to compare the EU to America rather than Ireland or Ireland to a state. I think you know what I'm saying.

And who ever said America doesn't have "natural beauty". All I can say it does have beautiful scenery and amazing landscapes.
A minimum of 51% of ye are
Do you really believe that 51% of the whole country voted for Bush?
