Hey just for those who just did the LC and are hoping to come to trinity, drop a post here, say hi, introduce yourself and tell us what you're going to be doing.

When the CAO offers come out I'll set up a new "Introduce Yourself" thread..

PS: yes this is a copy of the UCD,D thread. :)

I'm glad we've met in person, somehow it makes that less weird. This authority you speak of clearly doesn't exist. Now g'wan back to your thesis :)

Right, I guess this thread has turned into a mere amusing failure. Sorry Myth, if you want to start your own one at a later date fire away, you've a better track record.

Aw Apex I'm sorry, my brain really is fried from this thesis. Don't write-off the thread, there's bound to be loads of lurkers who are interested in posting on this thread but just haven't gotten around to it yet (prove me right kids, prove me right).

    It may be a
    mere amusing failure
but it has my vote for thread of the year. (as in a proper one or indeed for next year.)

this thread won't be of too much use in the immediate future. it's July- just a little too early for the proper stressers. But I reckon by the end of this month they'll bit quite a bit of interest in it.

Also an interesting observation my oh dear god i'm doing BESS thread turned into similar silliness.

So maybe it's just the natural reaction of some of the 'mature'* people on these boards. Also they now have it out of their systems.

    And it's very very funny.

    I left school at 16 , but.
    Even by my own admition,
I cant spell, but I can tell you every thing about ADHD/ADD,
parenting, manageing challangeing behaviour and I really really want to do ASD.
I have 3 kids , someone please tell me,

    A, your not to "old"

B,"of course you wont be in school with your son"

C,The kids wont miss you at all and you can cram your study between three kids, school runs, afterschool activiitys, and somewhere in between have a life.
Sure your husband wont miss you at all.

    cathy
    Age 34 going on 60.

My mother actually is 60 and went back to college part time last year. Never too old. And she works full time also. You can do it if it's what you really want. Your spelling will improve over time!
If you went part time, you have 3 evenings of lectures a week away from your kids, only a few hours.

I'm Josh, and I (hopefully!) will be doing maths. Looking forward to it, but tbh am a little scared - I imagine everything will be so different! Still, it should be good fun, and I'm glad to be going to Trinity, I always thought it had a nicer atmosphere that UCD or DCU.

See you all in October :D

    From school? Oh... it is.

Don't worry, you'll be fine. If I had to give some advice (which I don't, but I am anyway) I'd say try to meet as many people as you can in the first few months. Most freshers are in the same boat and would tend to be easy to strike up a conversation with. Even if you're not that outgoing a person, I'd say do as many things organised in freshers week as you can. One of the best weeks of my life was freshers week, it's a great way to kickstart your college experience.

Academically, being honest, don't worry too much about it until after christmas. You have another 3.5 years to do that.

    Thanks for the reassurance :)

What sort of stuff is organised for freshers week? I'm not really outgoing, but I'm certainly not anti-social, and I'd say I'll enjoy it once I get into it.

My name's Jimmy, and unless the points for Computer Science shoot up by over 215 points, I reckon I'll be doing that course next year :D

I heard something about a free €200 book voucher if you get over 545 or something??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 309 ✭✭Bartron Prime

Well done! That's pretty impressive so congratulations and all that.

There is indeed a book voucher. It's called the 'Entrance Exhibition' and is a voucher of €254 that is paid in two installments. You get the first one in Junior Freshman (1st year) and the second one in Senior Freshman (2nd year). So yup. You get a €127 voucher per year.

There's a little ceremony with Provost John Hegarty (Trinity's charismatic leader) with some food and such. It's all very nice. You can pick the voucher(s) up from the Exams Office every year.

Well I'm shocked to say the least. Anyway, if none of the CS guys on here are willing to show you around and the like, I'll do it as I'm already doing it for two others during that week. Additionally theres usually a Trinity Boards Beers in freshers week which is usually worth dropping in at.

Thats true. I've never found it as easy to start a conversation with someone I didn't know as it was when starting college!

Hi I just somehow managed to get the 600 needed for medicine but I was wondering if someone could tell me whether the trinners med heads are all total nerds...........
no offence to anyone on the course - I'll soon be one of you - but it has got the reputation..........:p

From what I've heard there is a very high standard to pass from year to year, no failures, no repeat exams, minimum of a 2:2 to pass a subject and organised group studies session after lectures (so like 6pm to 8pm). Some people find this very intense even somewhat bullying atmosphere.

Note: I Don't do med so all this is subjective.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

Medicine is not so much nerds but people willing to work a lot harder than your average student. Every med student I know is a lovely person and the classes do seem to bond together quite well.

Ah right, well it wasn't that I was aiming lower than that really(my goal was to break 550/to get all A1s/A2s in 5 subjects and a relatively high grade in the 6th), but I didn't work as hard as someone who actually needed 570 would have worked and made some comments about not being all that stressed. I honestly was only expecting c. 530 before last Wednesday though.

But hey, I'm not complaining, free book voucher ftw!(Thanks for the info, Bartron Prime)

Apparently it can be used in HMV as well, if you're so inclined. The flip-side to this is that you really don't need to buy college books, in first year at least.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭JC 2K3

    Interesting....

When I actually do buy CDs though, I tend to buy em online(not iTunes, just order em off CDBaby, eBay or Amazon), since a lot of the music I like enough to actually buy tends to be hard to find in shops.

Even if I don't need college books, there are other books I'll want to buy.

I still have my book prize from 2nd year. Your meant to be able to you it in HMV but depends on who's behind the counter. Some take it some dont. And I think you may have to go to H&F first to double check
