Presents a usb disk - no stupid synching playlists

    Optional
    Records TV
    Wifi

The new archos 605 but I don't think it has Divx or Xvid.http://www.archos.com/products/gen_5/archos_605wifi/index.html?country=global&lang=en
There is the Cowon A2. It has Divx and Xvid. Review here http://www.dapreview.net/e107_plugins/content/content.php?content.239 I don't see why so many people want Divx/Xvid.

so I'm back to the Archos .. hmmmm

Xvid is great for compressing those DVDs of personal footage, taken with a camcorder.

I heard once that some shisters have managed to convert some hollywood movies into DivX, in Russia or China or other  , if they discussed that here, they'd get banned though.

I think the Archos is a good choice because it has everything (except Divx and Xvid).

the archos does indeed support Xvid, and usually archos support Divx although not officially.... but this time around I'm not too sure.

Because it's a well compressed format and it's an Internet standard?

Gee... just in Russia or in China? Internet movie piracy isn't a worldwide problem?

You're right though, - it's not to be discussed here.

If you're looking for the Creative option, consider the
Zen Vision W, both 30GB and 60GB options available.
    Supports most formats/codecs.

    http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?currency=EUR&cPath=3&products_id=2111

You can buy a spare rechargeable battery.
    Will play Divx 4 & 5.

no experience of the creatives .. are they good?

is the zen ( non W ) any good ? they apparently are available here for 150 !?

Only thing about the Archos website is that the "weekly offers" often are not at all weekly...

    Did you buy any Plug-Ins?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,025 ✭✭✭zod

OK .. theres a great review here

    My two cents :

Screen is excelent - size and resolution awesome, menu system intuitive and easy, touchscreen is handy ..but because theres no place to put the stylus  you end using ur fingers .. finger prints.

Playback is good although there has been one or two that needed the the downloadable codecs for €20 .. which I haven't. In fact I haven't bought any plugs in yet coz the thing cost €300! Will though soon. Probably the browser first ( another €30 )

It connects to wifi simply and the online archos content portal has four sample streamable videos which work well. You can stream content from your home PC using nero or media center upnp .. but it's of limited use to me.

the audio on some video content has gone crackly after 10 mins of playback .. firmware update tonight should fix that hopefully.. the non standard usb is a pain as is the lack of AC charge ( must charge over usb out of the box)

Overall great device .. slim and light with best in breed video.:D

.. although in the comparison with the iphone the iphone looks good also!

after getting the archos 605 wifi myself today (160gb version). Delighted with it. Cost 320euros including shipping from hotmp3gear and didnt have to pay any import duty. The wifi is great, as i can stream xvids that are stored on my pc and satellite receiver.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

I was gonna do the same myself, buy the 160GB on HotMP3Gear but I thought if I was hit by customs it wouldn't be worth it. It is quite a bargin 160GB PMP for 320 Euro for all it does. Do you know Kaisersose77 if it streams iPod Mpgs and how long did shipping take?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,708 ✭✭✭kaisersose77

shipped wednesday last week, arrived today. Dont know about ipod mpegs ( do you mean .mov files? - if you so you have to get a 20euro plugin to play .mov quicktime files). It'll stream anything it supports i'd say as long as their filesize and bit rate aint huge. Web browser is better than i though it would be. All media players will add wifi, its so handy when you have a wireless router.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

I know I have to buy the Podcast Plugin to play the Mpeg4 videos but I thought I may be able to stream them without the Plugin.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,708 ✭✭✭kaisersose77

it plays avi's (xvid and divx which are mpeg4) without any plugin aswell as wmv. If it cant play the actual file, then streaming it isnt going to make a difference. Its brilliant value aslong as you dont have to pay import duty.

Look how much amazon in france are charging b4 shipping!

    http://www.amazon.fr/Archos-605-wifi-lecteur-multimedia/dp/B000SAI8QU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/403-3008547-1087665?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1188324955&sr=8-3

its 290 euros before shipping off hotmp3gear and you get $10 off with this coupon jbmm.net ( well i think its that)

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

Thanks Kaiserose77. I e-mailed Archos and they told me it wold be 415 Euro here but I don't think that was a definite price. Is there a socket on the device for an AC adapter? What is Youtube like on it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,708 ✭✭✭kaisersose77

Nope just usb cable ( but thats the way most mp3 players are now :( ), you can get docks off hotmp3gear. I ordered a battery dock, but thats not in stock till this week. Youtube works fine from what I have seen so far.

If anyone got the 605 and got the browser plugin, here are some mms links for streaming tv:

Some of them mightnt work and some might crash your player (just hold the power button if that happens). The first one is down atm but usually showns nasn and then premier league matches when there on. At least 2 were on, on Sunday. I don't have them all named, espn news and espn 2 are there somewhere and working anyways and so are fox 5 and fox 31. All the mtv and tmf stations work aswell .

If you get a program called urlsnooper and go to any streaming tv/radio stations you can find the direct stream. If its mms, it usually works and some rtsp links work if you change rtsp to mms. I posted the streaming rte links before somewhere in this forum.

If you go to the link below on your 605 and hold down on one of the links, pick open in new tab and it should stream the link. I found the link for streaming channel 4 but it only streams ok in windows media player, it shows up all garbled on the 605 and vlc player aswell.

Most channels have internet streams now and found these links on plenty of forums. There not gonna look great on a pc, but are fine on a small screen.
