Will it even startup with 512mb RAM and Vista Premium?
Before I closed it down, the Vista Sidebar alone was using 1.5GB RAM on my Dell machine (and this was with no actual gadgets/widgets/whatever-they-are-called running it, just an empty sidebar).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,019 ✭✭✭ct5amr2ig1nfhp

Its Vista Basic at that price.

That couldn't be right. That means that everyone using Vista would need about 5gb of ram to run it and a few apps

would the mobo accept pci-express gfx card. I know it's an upgrade option to get the 256MB ATI® Radeon® X1300 Pro PCI Express graphics card - but if you didnt get it, would the same motherboard be provided?

actually you cant remove the mouse as far as I can tell - it forces you at the end to fix the compatability issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭unklerosco

Using firefox on the mac it popped up n said fix compatability issue, I hit cancel n it went into my basket @ €368...

Upgraded to Vista prem as basic is a bit of a waste...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,807 ✭✭✭chump

home premium is worth the extra 30 euros or so! especially if you intend to use it for movies etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭unklerosco

I intend to use it as a htpc... will prob sell the monitor. €30 for prem was worth it if only for Media center...

You can't remove the mouse without selecting the wireless keyboard/mouse bundle. Your order will go through but will be put on hold until a rep phones you to rectify the problem. Some searching questions may be asked during the phone call about you EEP status.:D

Edit: Tried to order 5 just now and they won't add to basket. Also tried it with 1, same problem.

Seriously sweet deal you got there, considering the 22" is worth more then half the cost easily. :)

i went to €615 (used BOI)
    gfx to 256mb
    22" LCD
    320GB HD
    Enhanced Keyboard
dropped the mouse - nice tips lads

sweet deal :) (errr and i actually needed it!)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,829 ✭✭✭JackieChan

I tried my best to drop the mouse but then gave up on it after I got a message along the lines of.
'There is an incompatiblity in your order please correct this so as to avoid delays to your delivery.'

The sales staff may end up calling to correct(and get the 30 odd euro!) the order.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,266 ✭✭✭00sully

^ i got said message but just minimised the message. then when i went to check out i clicked "cancel" on the message to fix the compatibility issue - worked fine. (as pointed out by others in this thread!)

i'd like to see them charge me €30 for a mouse i dont need :D

Using an alternative operating system and getting a refund for Vista & the bundled software could mean a even better deal: €368 minus €77 for Windows Vista Home Basic and Works 8.0 equals €291
    For details: http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/03/25/1944209

P.S. A 3-button mouse with scroll wheel is available in Tesco for €7 (Labtec) and €4 (Tesco Value)

ps. that mouse thing is some saving! should have done that in hindsight

crap maybe I should have persevered.
Then again I'm happy with what I got
    Vista Premium
    2GB Ram
    256MB gfx
    Multimedia keyboard
    for just 627.
Especially since I'll be expensing it.

Mine isn't due til the 6th June. From reading HDUK it seems the 22inch monitor is out of stock for a while. So that'd explain it. I could be dead and buried by then!

Is it worth spending the extra money on the faster CPU's or is the "included" CPU enough? Sorry, I'm just not fully familiar with how dual core CPU speeds compare with the likes of P4 single cores.

Is everyone sure that there will be a PCI-x slot, as it states integrated graphics on the spec (unless you upgrade gfx)?

400 euro for a new machine with TFT tho.... I'm so tempted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭unklerosco

Depends on what u want to do...

As for the PCI-x slot.. i've had two dells in the last year, both came without cards n had a pci-x slot.. I hope this is the same as i've a card to stick in it...

Well, I'd like the PC to last a few years. I currently have an Athlon64 3200+ CPU, so I'd like something speedier than this, and that would be able to handle the latest games (of course, gfx would be needed, thus the question about PCI Express), and still do so for a number of years.

Ach, maybe I'd be better sticking with the 3200 for now. *shrug* It would just save me the bother of building, doubt I'd be able to build my own for the same price.

I found last night that if you add XP to the end of the code (305-D05E02aXP), you will be offered Windows XP Home instead of Vista.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,719 ✭✭✭kaisersose77

you may aswell get vista as your probably gonna need it at some stage no matter if you dont want it now. There a great pc, I got one before xmas. Took out the card reader that I got in mine and stuck in another harddrive and also stuck a harddrive in the bottom dvd drive slot. So have 1.82tb in harddrives atm in it :) , stuck in a satellite hd dvb-s2 card (100 euro) and have a 8500gt graphics card (85 euro) on the way that does full HD hardware acceleration. If you intend to use it as a htpc theres no need for the an expensive top of the range graphics card or more powerful cpu when blu-ray becomes the norm.

  • Moderators, Regional North West Moderators Posts: 19,159 Mod ✭✭✭✭byte

Oooh, a DVB-S2 card eh? Sweet!

I still can't make my mind up between buying the cheap Dell, or building. Budget says Dell though...

I just can't find what upgradeability the mobo offers, like number of PCI slots, etc. From what I gather, there are 4 RAM slots, a PCI Express slot. Dunno about RS-232 port (which I need), or number of SATA sockets etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,719 ✭✭✭kaisersose77

I dont know if this model will have the exact same motherboard as mine but mine has 4 sata ports, one graphics card slot, 2 normal pci slots that tv cards etc use, and one pci x1 i think that nothing worthwhile uses. No ide slots, so you'll have to get an ide pci card if u want to use IDE drives. Have 4*512mb ram in mine atm. No serial port on it as far as I can see. I wouldnt get any of those graphics cards that dell offer. Someone was selling them on adverts for 18 euros recently. These cheapish graphics card are what you'd want for a good htpc
