Showering - the nitty gritty

    Inspired by this thread: Lisez!

Best practise as regards frequency of showering seems to be a rousing issue amongst the populace of boards! Let us continue the discussion here. You may respond to the poll so that we have some stats to work with with which to raise the subject to the level of a pseudo-science and you may also comment in the thread and treat of the etiquette of showering. Gwan!

Me, I take what I believe to be a moderate view - watch not the clock but rather smell the armpit - if it's bad, take a shower. If there's no smell, no need to shower. I call it "instinctual showering".

That means when you can smell your armpits so can other people, not something i like to happen. Im a shower every morning person, it doesnt only clean me but also helps me wake up.

I remember the halcyon days when the internet was exclusively populated by geeks and questions like this didnt arise. It was taken as a given that everyone involved in any given discussion on usenet was festering in a bulging, filthy unix t-shirt eating three day old pizza. Now they have people with "girlfriends" and "real lives" on here. Its all gone to hell.

Well, that's why I'm asking all politicians canvassing in my Dáilcheantar on their position on installing showers in buses. They seem most interested...

Every morning and after working out. I love a good aul' shower. I'll stay in there for ages. It takes me ages to get out of bed in the morning but getting out of the shower takes even longer.

When it’s necessary. It really depends on the person in my opinion and what they’ve been doing and the weather. It also really depends on your job. If you work in a nice cool air-conditioned office sitting typing all day you probably don’t sweat that much versus someone who does manual labour all day in a hot warehouse where they not only sweat a lot but come home covered in dirt and grime on top of that. There is also the thing of showering isn’t the only way to wash one’s self though this is lost on a lot of people. I have never understood the people who find not showering daily as icky irrespective of the person involved and whether they sweat much or actually smell bad. I know people who need to shower twice daily a lot of the time because of their jobs and their hobbies (soldiers who go to the gym a lot). I can understand people who have a routine and shower daily because of that, or people who need a shower in the morning to wake them up or whatever but I don’t understand people saying that everyone should shower every day. They should shower when and as is necessary imho.

I shower first thing every morning. It wakes you up and you feel really fresh
    and clean.

You may not think you smell but you may become accustomed to your own
body oder and think your o.k. when, in fact, you could be stinking to high
    heaven.

A person where i work smells awful and this person works in an office.
I hate it when i have to go in there.
No one says anything, so this person probably thinks theres nothing wrong.

No one is going to tell you you stink. It would be a major insult.

I'd think of it more as a handy pointer... an indication that my instinctual showering algorithm needs fine tuning.
I've no problem telling people they stink tbh... if you're walking around reeking of BO (to the point where someone feels they need to raise this issue with you) and you actually have a problem with someone tipping you off for your own good, then you need to get over yourself.

Who cares about insulting someone who smells bad anyway?
Aren't they insulting you by stinking you out in the first place?

i shower every day, and after the gym/swimming when i go. i find though that the actual shower you use makes a big difference - i've a pumped power shower so it really is so relaxing to be under it.

I shower once a day when I'm working (which is everyday tbh). But for example when I'm off work or doing nothing it could be two days.

Sometimes I believe you overshower when you don't need to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,688 ✭✭✭grimloch

I shower every day in the morning before I head off to college/work. If I knew I definitely wasn't going to leave the house on any particular day, then I probably wouldn't bother showering.

TBH I can only imagine what the average persons balls smell like after 2 or 3 days sans water and soap.

    I'm sure he washes too.

Shower in the morning when i have something on (college, work, event) otherwise i go with the 'instinctual washer' and scrub when there's a smell.

Im a lazy ass when it comes to showering. I shower every 2nd day because my hair starts getting quite greasy and noticeable then. I like to have my own me smell though, its unnatural to be putting all that product on yourself all the time.

I like to follow the natural clock.

When the ballsack begins to itch, and a deposit of grease is accumulated on the leeward side ,the Flutther heads for the Mira.

In /out bottle of stout, buff up the bell ,and away on a hack for another few days.

Ah the perks of living in a crowded city...
I have to listen to peoples shítty screaming kids, neglected barking dogs, rumbling jets, car alarms, boy-racer knobs with stupid loud exhausts.
Then I have to inhale asshole car exhaust everywhere because people are too lazy to walk or cycle.
Step over dog turds on the path because people won't clean up after their dogs.
See crisp packets, beer cans, broken bottles thrown about the place because people are too stupid/selfish to use a bin or plan ahead.
Maybe you're just on the cusp of a realization... that people suck and life is shít?

There used to be two sales assistants who worked for our company at differing times and they had horrendous BO. It got so bad they were called over to head office and asked to do something about it!

I'll put it like this (as a male).

If I were in a "shirt and tie" position (which includes office work-casual dress code or no), then with a daily shave being a necessity, a shower would follow suit.

Thankfully, I'm not, so generally shave/shower each day of the weekend, and Monday to Friday as necessary (meeting customers/giving briefings the following day etc.)

The average, on contemplation, is about four a week, but your money may vary.

As regards the scent of a woman (as someone alluded to in the PI thread re: Napoleon & Josephine), that's a whole different ballgame.

I cant actually belive some people think its OK not to shower everyday.

Whether you like it or not you sweat every day, even in winter when its not hot, even if your not doing any pyhsical activity.

Your body also has dead skin which needs to be washed away.

I work with a guy who openly admits he only showers every 2 days and he focken stinks of BO at 8.30am in the morning

. . and to the poster who says he doesnt have enough clean boxers to wash them everyday. . . For focks sake - for the price of a pint or 2 you could easily buy some more boxers

i'd usually have 4 or 5 showers a week. though it depends, if the weather is really hot, or i'm back home on the farm with my father i could find myself taking 2 a day. i believe that the more showers teh better, but sometimes people can be obsessive about this topic

I have a shower every morning to wake me up. If I miss it, say if I'm sick or having a lazy day I feel really groggy for the whole day.

It's like a cup of coffee for me.

I would also have a shower after swimming to get the chlorine or salt out of my hair or if it were a particularly hot day and I feel sticky, a nice blast of cool water feels wonderful.

2 minutes in there but my long hair takes about 2.5 hours to dry naturally damn it! Blokes have it easy. I hate going out with very wet hair when its cold. And no, blow drying damages it!

Every second day for me (except in summer, when its way too hot)

Not everyone needs a shower everyday so people just get over it. I used to know a guy who could go out dancing all night in the same clothes four nights in a row, not shower and still not smell. I would not want to have to get up close and personal with him but I didn't have to so it didn't create a problem.
Some people have sweat/body odour problems and others don't so just deal with it.
Also, just because *you* don't think you smell doesn't mean you don't smell. Body odour works the same way as people who overload themselves with perfume stop smelling the perfume on their skin/clothes after awhile and spray more so they can smell it again while the people around them almost pass out from the noxious fumes.
Another newsflash is that you don't have to use soap every day to be clean. Skin, like hair, will get used to not being washed every day if you let it. Again this does not work for people who have body odour problems.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,698 ✭✭✭InFront

    Once a day
More than once a day - once in the morning to wake myself up, then later as required depending on training/ activity/ humidity etc.

I find myself showering out of boredom sometimes, especially on weekends in winter. It's also great to do during blocks of study periods.
