Would it be an idea for peeps to post up before and after pics?

Basically some shots of you before you started training and taking advice from the board and some shots of you now. I reckon it would be a good motivational tool and it also gives others the chance to visually help where needs improvement or where is really lookin good!

I reckon some posters here could even post up pics to help motivate others, I know G'ems pics after she cut down to ripmania was a super visual aid as to what kind of results her nasty carb depleted diet made.

    So how about it?
Any one think it a good idea, and who do ya wanna see first!! :)

slinks back from the crowd as im not goin first :)

    Bench: 112.5kg
    Deadlift: 190kg

    Now they're about: (all raw)
Squat: 190kg (attempting 210kgx3 on Saturday in gear)
Bench: 125kg (done 150kg in comp equipped)

ah bloody hell Jon, you would have to mention me  I *hate* putting up the before photos!!!! Right so... as Jon said I did a "nasty carb depleted diet" as was detailed in my journal in the fitness logs, for 8 weeks from the end of August '06 to the end of October '06.

    Before :o

    31392-before_after_only.jpg

    Afters: :D

    74b2a-front_after_only.jpg

    3274f-back_after_only.jpg

I went from 164lb to 147 lbs, from 22-23% bodyfat to around 12-13%. It was a 20lb fat loss, 4lb lean muscle increase. I trained heavy weights, low reps, split training, with some LIT cardio 4-5 times a week (45-60 min walk usually). But it was the diet that made the difference. 8 weeks of nastiness by all accounts :o

yup, 50g carbs (veg only), 130g protein, 100g fat (10% carbs, 40% protein, 50% fats!!), about 1600 cals/ day. It's actually the high fat that's the key as trib said.

thanks catherine!! sometimes I do wonder if people think I'm really a man/ overweight internet warrior/ talking rubbish :D

@ cowzerp - thank you! Of course I really need to point out that I don't still look like that. Getting down to bf that low was unsustainable in the long-term and unhealthy - it interfered with my normal .. erm.. cycles and I always knew I'd have to put some weight back on. Then when I started to train for the PL comp my muscle mass shot through the roof, so I now weigh more than I did in the 'before' photos but have significantly less bf - a happy medium I guess ;)

I remember it well :D It's funny, I read back over my log sometimes and it seems like I'm reading about a different person! When you do something that severe you just completely zone out from normality and live in a little coccoon world that only consists of you, the gym, 8 gallons of water a day and broccoli + chicken + flax oil meals

eggie - my fats came from olive oil, flax oil, avocadoes and eggs and I supplemented with fish oils. Three of my four meals a day had two tablespoons of oil in them :o

I took him over a year and a half to smile, then he can't stop grinning - he must be pleased with the results. I think most people would be fairly happy to be where he was at after four or five months.

How low a BF do people think is sustainable? for guys & girls?

If you had say 20lb of "extra" lean mass than average and were 10%BF (male) is that healthily sustainable? Do other atheletes tend to go on bulks & cuts? I would ideally like the size and leaness of a pro swimmer and just sustain it if possible.

The below is me coming up to the end of my last cut......i will try and find a picture tonight to show where i started at and how fat i was.

I am currently doing a milder diet so will do progress photo's and then see how they go.

That's pretty fascinating. At the start when he first got his tan I was just thinking "ugh... no, that looks dodgey"... but once he started to bulk up the guy was looking healthy and well. He should lay off the sun tan though, I always think it makes body builders look freaky. That's quite a good visual aid though, if you think such things are doable you can go and do them.

Well it depends what you mean by "sustainable". <10% for guys is certainly attainable, but it will require a good bit of dedication to maintain it. It'll mean training hard and eating clean and the beer would have to fall by the wayside or be reduced significantly. A guy with 10-12% bf will generally look well though.

*note - I'm assuming that the guy has a decent amount of LBM of course - if not he'll just look skinny :o *

For girls, the general guideline is that <15% bf is likely to interfere with your menstraul cycle. Girls naturally carry more fat, it's needed to cushion our reproductive organs. Although there isn't any long-term data that consclusively says if there's any danger to having bf so low it causes long-term amenhorrea (loss of periods), personally it's not something I'd be happy mucking around with. At 13% bf mine stopped and it took 3 months for them to come back even after I'd upped my cals.

BBing competitors on stage will typically be around 3-5% bf for men, and 8-10% bf for women. Off season they'll often only allow a +4-5% increase, as trying to diet back down again multiple times a year is too difficult and stressful on the body.

Athletes wouldn't tend to bulk and cut,at least not to this extent. Athletes may have to make weight depending on their sport if it's required (MA competitors for example), but for a lot of high level athletes maintaining low bf will just be advantageous because they'll move around faster and have more energy. But the whole idea of "cutting" is really the realm of bodybuilders.

[rant] I get a bit tetchy when I hear people throw around the word "cut". A cut isn't a diet, a cut is a severe drop in calories and manipulation of macronutrients specifically with a fat-loss goal in mind. You will more than likely lose strength, be lethargic, have mood swings, suffer from insomnia, and generally feel like a luke-warm turd for the duration. Unless you have spent a considerable amount of time building an appreciable amount of LBM the idea of doing a cut really shouldn't enter your head. But if you have, and you have a seriously masochistic streak, it's worth it  [/rant]

I found myself laughing out loud on the street sometimes at how insanely hungry I was when I was doing the Velocity diet. People used to just stare at me.

I have to say the diet was one of the best experiences of my life.

By the way in reference to John Stone fitness, in the 12/6/2006 picture the guy looks terrible. He looked more normal in 10/06/2003.

Not really sure what you mean but you look in good shape at the moment-if your into bodybuilding, i would reccomend you drop another 3-4% for posing. you do power lifting so i would not be worried about body fat so much-you have some to play with either way-up or down thats your choice based on your ideal look.
