    Who cares really?

It's like the switch from webmail to mymail, except now we get to keep email for longer. I look forward to having my tcd email for life now, so I'm happy. This really isn't a big deal, anything that people think might happen probably won't, it's just people are afraid of change.

    Agreed..

I personally think the Sports Hall fees debacle is of more importance to students then the gmail thing..

At the end of the record article, it was mentioned how students will be receiving an e-mail from ISS soon should they wish to opt-in or opt-out to GMAil.

People, cut the solidarity crap. You're scoring points off thin air.

If that was aimed at me, you can cut the style of crap you seem to be spouting. I have no need to score points, nor anyone here that I really waould want to score points with.

To turn around and say that other people are regurgitating opinions above is trite coming from someone who has reposted their opinion several times.

anyhow, i'll keep this short - i'm at congress at the mo and its all going mad yeh know.
    2. I agree, but your conception of the "needs of the students" is misguided. Immediate concerns will not benefit us in the long run, they are petty distractions and fodder for the popularity contest ("election")

the "us" you refer to is a continuously changing demographic, so I think its actually your concept of the needs of the students thats misguided, if you'd actually stop and think for a moment rather than barging ahead with a continuously misguided view of how immediate concerns dont matter or benefit us - everything done by the SU does not need to benefit for the long run, crazily enough.

oh, and as for the election, to be truly honest if you feel as strongly about the ethical and moral position of the college and the SU, put yourself forward some day. Its hard work, its pretty thankless, but give it a shot.

"Scared of change?" Do you have the vaguest idea what your talking about?

The sky may not be falling on your head specifically, Ibid, it doesn't mean theres no problems.

Bored are we, xebec? No one's forcing you to read - shoo.

My conception of what is good for students does not limit itself to those who wish to chisel their abs at a reasonable rate. To be perfectly honest I have no concern with continuing to argue with those who insist on the irrelevance of what I'm saying without airing a single rational argument to back it up.

If you don't want repetition then I have to insist you reread what I've written.

    Have fun kids.

I'm in the same boat as you so I emailed IS Services and here's the response I got:

Unfortunately the Gmail systems is not up and running as yet. There will be an email sent out late next week to all final year students informing them of their account expiry dates and how to switch over to Gmail, please note we will not be expiring any accounts until Gmail is up and running.

From a recent e-mail from ISS:
    ATTENTION: Final Year Students

    Account Expiry Notification

    Thursday 12th July 2007

Final year computer accounts will be deactivated on the final day of Trinity term. This means that these students will not be able
to logon to the College computer systems and all files will be removed from their personal filestorage.

Who is affected by this expiry?

The expiry affects all final year students (except those who do not pass their final exams).

Why is the expiry being implemented?

Computer accounts are closed after a course of study has finished and students have sat their final exams.

When will the expiry come into effect?

Accounts will close on the final day of Trinity Term - 23:59 on Thursday 12th July 2007.

    What about my email?

IS Services will shortly be implementing TCD Google email for students and you will be able to switch to this service before the account expiry date. With this service, students can retain their TCD e-mail address, @tcd.ie, for life. In the coming weeks you will be emailed with instructions to help you get started with TCD Google email.

Is it possible to redirect future TCD email to a non TCD address?

Yes, email forwarding can be set in your TCD Google account.

    Request for Account extensions

Is there any way I can check my TCD email in the time between my account being deactivated and my reregistering?
Yes, as stated above, you should be using your TCD Google e-mail account which will remain yours for life.

In case people are getting concerned that this isn't happening, all the Sabbats got this yesterday:
    Hi

As part of a pilot being run by IS Services you are being
invited to switch your e-mail to the new TCD Myzone service
which will replace Mymail. This new Google Gmail service also
includes calendar and chat and provides a Trinity e-mail account
    for life.

IS Services are interested in receiving your feedback on this new
service and in particular, your experience of the process of
switching to the Myzone service. Please e-mail your feedback to helpdesk@tcd.ie

with the subject line - "Myzone switch".

To switch to the TCD Myzone service please go to
    http://isservices.tcd.ie/email/myzone.php
    and follow the instructions.

Note: IS Services and the Disability Office are currently
preparing a statement on the accessibility of this new
    service.

    IS Services Helpdesk

We were told we'd be in the first batch to change over so maybe we're guinea pigs. Will do it and see what the story is and report back later.

MyZone? I presumed they'd just call it MyTCD!

Anyone been sent an invite yet? Dangerbob, did you make the move over?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 112 ✭✭Danger Bob

Yep. It's pretty cool. It's designed so that you customise your page and your e-mail is just one part of the customisation process. Ie. You add everything you want and your e-mail is just one of the things you can add. There's also news updates from CNN, BBC, Reuters and others, daily 'How To' guides and other stuff to add on. When I set up first, the welcome page looked pretty dull and boring but they've prettied it up a little. Have a few concerns about navigation of the page and I'm concerned that students who aren't that net savvy might be a bit confused by it at first. For example, the fact that you've to add your e-mail account to your 'zone' means that some students could spend a long time trying to work out where to find their e-mail account. However, I think the issues with that are being tinkered with now.

    ...but its just iGoogle?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭Dubliniensis

My class was invited during the week and I made the switch... Agree with Bob...the switch was painless enough but its hard finding your email once you're done!

MyZone looks absolutely hideous...not sure what they were smoking in IS Services when they picked the colours or designed the logo but it looks tacky and amateur!

My only other gripe is the actual login URL for email (once you figure it out) is pretty cumbersone: http://mail.google.com/a/tcd.ie

No, I mean you can't do the same things with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

oh can you not add all the normal google widgets to the myzone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

It's just not set up in the same way. It's a lot more... finicky. There's no tabs, there's a weird menu thing at the side. It's just different, like siemens phone, and I fear change.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

awell stick with the norm of forwarding onto normal gmail i suppose

I just got the link sent to me there. Although it doesn't make much different, the size for normal GMail is 2859 MB, while for TCD GMail it's 2048 MB.

Set mine up today aswell, it seems a bit longwinded to have to log onto MyZone before going into my email account but apart from that it seems pretty good. Unlike most 4th years I'm coming back next year to do 4th year again so hopefully the added functionality will come in useful next year!

Yeah...I agree! The direct login URL for email is really cumbersome: mail.google.com/a/tcd.ie

I've emailed IS Services about it... I wonder if they can set up a shorter URL such as gmail.tcd.ie that points to the above?
