I can honestly say there's not one shop in town that I genuinely think is great.
Favourites would be maybe River Island,Book Centre, BPM (only place in town to stock Morrissey and Rammstein)

    Fair play to BPM! :)

I like the book centre , Im not big into books I just like that ya can wander around there and have a hot chocolate or whatever , its nice enough in there......hmmm in terms of actual shops nothing really stands out.
If BPM wasnt so small Id like it because they do the kinda cd`s I like that I wouldnt find down in Golden discs........................Yea I think thats about it really.

Book centre here too, Nice atmosphere (as long as its not too crowded), Nice coffee, not a bad selection either.
I like Tall tales too, but to a lesser extent, they have some rarer stuff there though.
    Nowhere else stands out really.

Have to say the book centre and Tall tales bookshop.Although I remember when the Book centre moved from Broad St/Michael St to Red Square I was very disappointed. The new store was huge in comparison but the selection and amount of stock hardly improved.

The fact is most shops in Waterdord are crap. We're just so used to second rate stuff that we hardly question it.Galway is a good example. They have a large selection of shops second only to Dublin in a City centre that is smaller than Waterford. They have some trendy shops like Habitat and Schuh and HMV I think.Yet in Waterord we seemed destined to be stuck with the same old Bland ****e.Railway Square is typical the anchor tennant is a SuperValue for **** sake.

I think we need a few more international chains in other areas. We are well served in international and indigenous shops for womens clothing although a femal poster may disagree.I would like to see a Waterstones/Borders in Waterford. Also a HMV and Virgin. One Starbucks and one only. One Costa and plenty of indigenous shops.I would also like to see a few funky shops like Forbidden planet or Sub City(Dublin and Galway).I think a Brown Thomas would be a the ultimate vote of confidence in the City.It would be the retail equivalent of a University and would make other investors stand up and take notice of Waterford.

Although there is hugh potential there is teo many wannabe politicians with an axe to Grind who will say "Waterford has enough shops".Yeah right! Missus company director and missus CEO will be well served by Shaws and Penneys leaky roofs.

People are been ripped off in Waterford for years now because of lack of choice. There is a store near the apple market that is selling low price gear for top dollar.I bought a top in Unique in Dublin for 8 punts 7 years ago.A year later I saw the same top for over 20 punts. He was only getting away with it because there is no competition here.

There is one other place I forgot to mention, the comic place on the quay Comix-Stop, the owner is a really nice guy, its nice to go in, browse and chat. Hes a small outfit at the moment but he has aspirations of building up to sub-city level. Hope it all works out for him.

Agree with everything you said there mad man.

The reason why Galway has better stuff when it comes to music/books is the university. There are so many students there, and probably courses with reading lists, etc.

Yeah I was optimistic about this when I saw it.Though he is not in a great place IMO.He seriously needs some new stock though.

This is true.I often wonder if the interests of Waterord people are comparitavely narrow.I have that impression although it probably has more to do with the Brain Drain that is happening there because of the lack of University. However it is not just academic material I am talking about. We have less book shops than Wexford and Kilkenny. We have less specialist shops i.e Arts and Crafts than we had twenty years ago.It is difficult to go back to Waterford for that reason.People often ask me if I would go back everytime I go down there.I would love to but there is not enough diversity in Services yet.The natural ameties are second to none.Waterford is in a primo position to have the best of both worlds.

Comics - Yes, Action Figures - Not yet (according to owner).
Theres also gaming tables for people who want somewhere to play magic: the gathering and the likes, on a couple of occasions I was in there the owner was teaching people how to play the games too.
He also sells his paintings and sketches and does comissioned work too, any of it that i've seen is very good.
My brother was telling me recently that he does comic drawing and urban art classes too.

I really hope he can sustain this shop and he Broadens his range of stock.I would like to see some Graphic Novels like DC,Marvel,Vertigo, the full range basically. He really needs to get up to Michael St. Where tall tails is or arundel Square.

Although these sort of shops don't really need passing trade. Just like the Hobby shops and games shops in the past, they can be anywhere, and people with the interest will find them. I guarantee that most people who are into comics knows where he is.

Tall Tales on the other hand will benefit from the extra passing trade.

I think though it make a better impact visually up in Michael St or Arundel square.Although the flip side of it is that we Waterford meeds to diversify its retail choices in the quay and O'Connell St and similar places.

yup no shop mmaybe the bookcenter but that more to buy the odd mag, i wouldnt dream of buying music (buy music HAHAHAAH) or any DVDs , so the interweb is where i would spend 90% of my money.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,620 ✭✭✭Roen

Yup, do 90% of my buying on the net these days, although I do have a soft spot for Impact on Gladstone St.
I think the only thing you can't trade in online is atmosphere or 'craic'. That's why I stick Downes in.

Yeah I saw that, it's been closed for a while now, there was a sign saying it was closed for stock taking and to ring the Galway office with enquiries...seems weird that all the stock is gone off the shelves for a stock taking and for so long...

The Book Centre and Tall Tales are about the best shops in town all right. Also Sound Store. :)
