A Shoot

On other shooting forums I visit occasionally, group shoots are popular events, where members get to meet up, chat and shoot cool guns. Being that I don't usually get to attend these, being on the wrong side of the Atlantic, the thought occurred to me that something similar might work here.

    Couple of ideas.

    1. No competitions. People tend to get all caught up in the competitive element, arguments over rules etc. etc. it's a fun shoot.

    2. No club/organisation politics either.

    3. As far as possible, the shooting venue should be as flexible as possible. Not much point in us all going to the UCD water tower range to shoot fullbores!

    4. This isn't to be very formal at all. No big awkward group bookings/deposits etc. People just turn up - shoot - have a bit of craic.

    5. Start small. Leave the schuetzenfest extravaganzas for later years - if the first run doesn't end in bloodshed!

    Comments invited.

I was thinking along the same lines just the other day.

for me at least I would love to do as suggested but lack
the transport (I dont drive at present) and I am a total
    newbie at the moment.

As I will be starting out as a newbie for paper target shooting at .17HMR
it will mean there wont be many if any competitions that I can enter in the future as
(excluding full bore as I cant afford that yet) its nearly all .22LR
but I would love to meet up (once I have gained a little experiance)
with people for informal shoots or meetups where you can chat and
discuss and maybe even get the chance to fire off a few shots from
guns/rifles that you would normally not get the chance to.

Reckon ur on a winner there Civ. Where and when?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,057 ✭✭✭civdef

I only do the initial ideas, someone else can do the rest of the work!

Seriously though, it'll come down to a consensus on where/when is convenient for most of the interested people.

MNSCI is closest to me, but I don't mind travelling further if necessary, and timing is fairly flexible.

    Hmmm...

If one more agrees to attend , we'll only get one can from Civ's 6 pack each..
Oh well ...he can always buy more .

Can I suggest the title of the Annual Boards "crap shoot" , It would help me justify why I keep missing things ..:D

    Jaycee,

I was thinking more along the lines of a 3l bottle of White Lightning for refreshments, with plastic cups.

(For the benefit of any humourless indivduals haunting this forum tonight, let me just point out this is intended as a flippant comment and not intended to promote drinking and shooting or to be offensive, therefore please don't bother asking for it to be removed, as to be quite honest, no one cares.)

This might also be a good chance for people to try other disciplines, we could see IPSC heads with Anschutz 2013s and ISSF heads with Sig 226s.

i have shot there before but i think not 100% sure though that non-members can only shoot rimfire rifles and not the full bore centre fire rifles.

Come back to me when you have and try not to be accusing me of lawbreaking in the meantime.

    That needs to be clarified.
I hear that non members can only use club .22 rimfire, non members cannot use the pistol or centrefire range. Don't know about the clay range. Can Civ or Rovi check as they are both members. I think Hilltop allow non members use the pistol, rimfire but no centrefire rifles, and clay range so it might be a better option, unless Courtlough will allow pistol, rimfire and clay.

We at Courtlough would normally love to oblige in a situation like this but we dont have a pistol range. .22 and clays only so no joy from our side.

That is the situation allright- wouldn't really suit so.

Any Hilltop member able to find out if that location would be better?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 649 ✭✭✭sidneyreilly

At Hilltop. You can shoot .22lr bench 50m, .22-.357 indoor gallery, small-bore and fullbore pistol and full clay layout.

Is there any range out there that 'officially' allows non-members fire fullbore rifles?
The two I know pretty well don't/can't (Midland and Hilltop, respectively).

Iv heard of midlands letting groups shoot fullbore for a fee, maybe they would do a deal?

There seems to be a Push on generating interest in Full Bore
    so Teams can compete internationally.

So I dont know why Clubs cant get a dedicated Full Bore rifle specifically
for introducing or giving people a taste of what its like to fire.
    Same goes for Pistol.

Surely your not expected to spend about 1500-3000 for a rifle thats barrell
may burn out after 1000 rounds another wad on a scope, hell for a licence,
getting House alarms put in etc Before!! you get a taste or feel for shooting
at longer distances and with larger more expensive rounds.

I would LOVE to be able to fire full bore but cannot afford it
and I am only starting out so maybe long term in the distant
    future.

Midlands looks as thought its going to have a lovely voice activated
clay shooting set up but again when I asked about it they said that
you need to have your own shot gun to shoot clays there for now.
Same goes for anything ther than .22LR. :-(

Not all clubs have the ranges to fire fullbore stuff on. Plus, training ROs for new disciplines and the wierd mistakes newbies make is not trivial and is vital for safety. Plus, there are a lot of new disciplines being pushed right now - Class F, Target Rifle, Service Rifle, IPSC, at least six ISSF pistol disciplines, and so on. That's not to say it won't happen - ideally, every club should have at least one firearm owned by the club to expose every discipline they shoot to new shooters (and old shooters looking to try something new!). But it will take some time.
