Why are all the people who play darts so fat, Barney is about 15 stone and phil taylor is at least 20. I mean they could do something other than sit in a pub all day and have pints and nuts

Well being of slender build is no way advantageous in the sport really.

well its a cheap game that could lead to fights

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,211 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

Its because its not a sport and requires no physical conditioning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,117 ✭✭✭✭MrJoeSoap

So should the forum be moved? Move the snooker, shooting, archery forums etc... while you're at it.

Whatever about actually being a sport, it is a very difficult game of skill. Ever hit a 180? It's damn hard. And even harder to do it on demand.

Yes, fitness is not critical but nor is it for chess, bowling or bridge either - all sports recognised by the IOC.
Last year's BDO World Champion was anything but fat - a fit 19 year old from Holland. However, the PDC World Final told another story - Taylor and Barney must have near 40 stone between them.

Isn't it a good thing that body type doesn't matter in Darts.
I mean you can be as tall and lean as Scholten (6'4") or as short and round as Jocky was... and anything in between.
The sport or game of darts is unique in several ways: the equipment required to play is reasonably inexpensive, a relatively small amount of space is required to play, and special clothing is not required. Age, gender, size and physical strength/endurance have almost no effect on a player's ability to do well. These factors combine to make darts the appealing and popular game it is today

The comment referring to darts (traditionally a working class game) as a knackerish sport is crass and tells more about the posters prejudice...

    from http://www.darts.150m.com/History.htm
Is it a Sport or a Game?...

On The 24th March 2005 Sport England took the lead in officially recognising darts as a sporting activity.

The decision was approved at a recent Sport England Main Board meeting and paves the way for further recognition from other sports councils in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

In taking the initiative to acknowledge darts as a legitimate sporting activity, Sport England took into account its status as a national and international sport, its high and growing levels of participation and the physical and mental skills and dexterity needed to compete successfully.

Sport England Chief Executive, Roger Draper, said that the Board decision looked beyond the stereotypical image of darts and took into account its many positive sporting and social values: “The presentation of darts as a pub game has helped popularise its cult appeal, but the reality is that it is a sport played by many thousands of people across the county in locations ranging from schools to village halls, social clubs and sports centres".

"By taking the lead in recognising the skills and social and community values associated with darts, we hope others will follow suit in the near future to complete its formal and official recognition as a sport,” he added.

There are plenty of games that don't involve physical activitie like snooker and tiddilywinks but none of them are fat but in darts its rare to see anyone under 15 stone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,454 ✭✭✭cast_iron

Once again, you're prejudices and stereotyping is showing through.

You clearly know little about darts. Whilst there are plenty of fat guys in it, there are plenty of not fat in it also.

    Edit: Gille, you sure?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,640 ✭✭✭Gillie

    Pretty sure yeah!
Lots of muscle! Just making the point that 15 stone is not necessarily fat!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,454 ✭✭✭cast_iron

If you bothered to read my earlier post, the current BDO World Champion is a slim 19 year old from Holland - Jelle Klaasen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,454 ✭✭✭cast_iron

Of the PDC, yes. The BDO is a separate Championship.

In light of your lack of knowledge, what kind of question were you posing in the 1st place!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,032 ✭✭✭Oman

Sorry for my lack of knowledge but i only have basic tv and cant keep with the fat sport that is darts

Well if darts is on sport channels, then i hazard to guess why the **** poker has so much Sport-channel airtime.

Kenny, you've still to tell me why it's a knacker sport?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,370 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kingp35

There has been some awful rubbish posted in this thread. Why the hell is darts a "knacker" sport? If by that you mean its a working class sport then you are totally correct but then so is soccer and to a certain extent GAA. Are both of those knacker sports as well?

Darts, although originally a pub game, is now well and truely a sport. There are now darts training academies for young up an coming players, darts has been officially recognised as a sport and it will more than likely be an event at the 2012 Olympics. Just because it doesnt require you to run around a field doesnt mean that it not a sport.

As for fat people being able to pay darts, as Licksy says that part of the appeal to the sport. A person of any age, sex or fitness level can play the sport. You can play it in your own bedroom and thats what I love about it. The reason that there is quite a few heavy darts players around is because these guys put in 4 or 5 hours practice a day. Yes some are overweight but so what? I dont see what the problem is. And anyway there re loads of skinny players playing darts, including an ex Middlesborough footballer!

Darts is a hugely enjoyable sport that has so many characters involved in the game, many of whom are overweight. Without those players the sport would not be half as good as it is today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,000 ✭✭✭The Rooster

Inspector and Kenny5 are just ignorant. They know so little about the sport, Taylor, Barney and Fordham are the only 3 players they know.

They've obviously never heard of top ranking slim players such as Roland Scholten, Dennis Priestley, James Wade, Terry Jenkins, Jelle Klaasen, Michael van Gerwen etc etc

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,235 ✭✭✭iregk

Ok I'm taking from all of this that some people only really know Barnie and Phil. Well most of the great players today are not fat, just the two best are!

Lets have a look at some more house hold names shall we: Llyod, Preistly, Mason, Painter, Part, Van Gerwen, Klassen, Beaton, Scholten... I could go on but between those there is not one fat person. Kind of rebukes the myth doesn't it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,640 ✭✭✭Gillie

Llyod, Priestly & Part are pretty big guys!

Yeah its pretty clear that Kenny and inspector have never actually watched the sport and have just heard about Taylor, Barney and Fordham because these three have had the most media exposure.

Maybe if they sat down and watched the sport their attitude would change. Tbh alot of people seem to have the same attitude as these two and its a problem that the sport needs to address and if they do more people will become involved with the game.

Dennis Priestley is not a big guy, yes he has a slight Belly but the man is 56 years old. Lloyd was a big guy but has lost over 3 Stone in the last few months. Part is big enough true but then again its not like they have to be in peak physical condition is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,640 ✭✭✭Gillie

TBH. What does it matter! If someone doesn't like the sport your not going to change their mind.

Taylor is the greatest that ever Lived and he's overweight. Surely that says something!

Remember the days where Darts players used to have Pints on stage! Not that long ago!

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,370 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kingp35

Yeah I remember they could have pints and they could smoke on the stage on the stage as well. I think its better off that they arent allowed to do this anymore as it cleans up the sports image but I feel the same as you Gillie. What the hell does it matter if a player is fat or not? The only thing I care about is how good he is at playing this brilliant sport.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,640 ✭✭✭Gillie

    Hell Yeah brother!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,151 ✭✭✭Ronan|Raven

Agreed, I find my beer belly helps keep me balanced when throwing ;) Just because these players may be overweight why should it matter, it doesnt take away from the skilled players they are. Hell look at Van Gerwen he must be only 10stone!

Didn't taylor sliim down by 4 stone or something when part beat him in '03. He attributed the weight loss to a loss of balance and promptly put back on the weight!
