I think that all got knocked on the head because of problems with product liability insurance...

You never know there might be someone still taking a chance on it.

Why would you? You would have no idea what kind of damage and abuse the previous owner of the tyre did to them.
A scrap yard would be your best bet if your really thinking of doing this.

i think im not sure though that a garge cannot install worn tyres onto a car by law. Im not 100% sure on this though.

'Cos he's thinking of selling his car soon and doesn't want to spend €200 per corner on tyres he's only going to get 10% of the life out of.

Just curious, is it that you're changing your car???

I wouldn't be completely OK with putting used tyres on my car, but it's common practice in the States IIRC

I wouldn't fit part worn tyres to any car.

So, buying used tyres from a scrapyard (so probably from a crashed car) is safer than buying them from a tyre specialist?

There is a tyre place here in Donegal that sells "slightly used new tyres". That bit always baffled me.

The garage opposite the esso garage near nutgrove used to have a sign up for years selling "newsed" cars.

a tyre with 1 mile on it is used.

So, no good then? Nope, don't think so............and the dealers are stuffed with tyres from people ppting for new alloys on their new cars w/new tyres (larger), so there's a frickin' huge pile of 'ornery tyres unused somewhere.........

..and if you find them, PM me - need 4.

After taking six hours to choose. :p

Back on topic, the place in question advertises these tyres and seems to do very well.

I always buy tyres from the scrap yard. They are always in fairly good condition as well.

I'll be damned on paying for tyres that cost more than my car itself.

Are you joking? you have no idea what sort of condition the tyre is in? There is much more to a tyre than what you see on the outside...

If you can't afford new tyres I think that you should seriously reconsider your mode of transport..

Your tyres we new, and you know what condition they are in coz you have been driving on them... 2nd hand tyres could have been up on a silage put for 3 years for all you know!

Have you ever bought a used car? If so do you go out and buy 4 new tyres for said used car? Do you buy 4 new tyres for every car you have owned when you purchased it?

If the man wants to buy used tyres then let him, sometimes its not just a matter of affording new tyres. If you buy a car for €500 why then go out and spend more money on getting 4 new tyres fitted when the car would only be used for a relatively short period of time...

There are benefits from buying used tyres and then there are the downfalls also.

I dont see people get all high and mighty about people buying used cars so why nit pick on the tyres?

Yes, always buy 2nd hand, and I will get new tyres thrown into the deal or get em myself.

I get picky about them coz they are the one thing that holds you on the road and stops you. Most people get 2 years out of tyres or more, so its a small price to pay for safety...

As I said if you can't afford tyres how can you afford to be motoring..

I'm on the look out for part worn van tyres & came across this thread...

I'll prob get given out to for stirring sh1t but isn't getting a part worn tyre she same as driving your car six months after buying tyres.

And before I get given out to asking what I want the tyres for, go buy a new one, I bought the van 2nd hand so technically I've bought 4 partworn tyres!

There are a few places that sell part worn tyres around. The tyres come from germany (in a container at 10k a time), over there they change their tyres before the winter and if the tyre has less than 5mm, they discard it.
I bought 4 Goodyear rain-pro (?) a few winters ago, they were basically a snow/winter tyre. They had done about 2k miles (8mm) maybe and i though what the hell, they were good, but wore out far too quickly in our winters.

Wouldn't buy them for the normal car, but you'd be surprised how many people do. I wouldn't buy them just because i would think its a waste of money when good new tyres only cost 100e and will last 2/3 times longer. That would be my reasoning, but i dont understand how people think their unsafe. If you view the tyre and sidewalls, and there's no marks or bubbles, then why would they be unsafe?
If i was buying a used car, i'll keep the tyres on it till they need to be changed, same thing no?

edit; didn't see the huge bump this thread got.

I've just got back from a place called Tyreland in Dublin 11, charge me €45 a corner for 16" continental tyres inc fitting balancing... They have 7mm tread on them.. 1 mm gone but over €55 cheaper per tyre........
    Bargain..!!

    195 / 65 / 15 €39.99
    205 / 55 / 16 €44.99
    225 / 45 / 17 €59.99

I would highly recommend this place, was in and out within 35 mins..

    Bargain..!!

Until one blows out on ya...bargain alright...is it me or are some people completely insane in thinking tyres that had to be taken off something else for whatever reason are worth the risk? There's been a few threads on here the last couple of days with people questioning are tyre bulges and nails in tyres ok for the NCT and all that. It's very worrying. Tyres are one of the most important consumables on your car and are what keep you glued to the road. Why would anyone risk that to save a few bob? It's not as if new tyres can't be had for good prices if people shop around:mad:

    //Rant over

If you are short on cash, then it is way better idea to buy worn tyres that come from quality brand, like Michelin, Nokian, Goodyear etc instead of buying the new, cheap China made tyres. Those tyres should be banned, the ones like Wanli, Camac, Sunny. Awful tyres, specially in wet.

Try Tyreland in Glasnevin ind est, they only do recognised tyre brands and test each one before it is sold.

Sealant services in the glen in Waterford do them:)

Just go up to the cream crackers yard...they'll throw in the whole wheel for you ;)

....personally I'd just get a properly inspected tyre as I value my safety, even if the one above is 'perfect boss!'

Tyres from here are imported from Germany where their law is 5mm tread unlike our 1.6 mm, all tyres are tested in a number of ways..

I wont be buying new tyres ever again..
