Boo Hoo I've lots of vouchers for the sales and I can't go to them. I've just broken my ankle over the weekend and I'm struggling quiet badly with the crutches.

    Enjoy the sales

Xmas sales commence as shoppers beat all expectations
    Isabel Hayes

HAVING spent a fortune on Christmas presents and stayed out of the shops for a whole 24 hours, it will soon be time to go shopping again. And while Wednesday 27 December is the big day, some shops will be kind enough to provide cooped-up families a reprieve from 9am on St Stephen's Day.

The mulled wine will hardly have left the system before shoppers can start picking up computers, TVs and dishwashers at cutthroat prices in both PC World and Dixons nationwide.

Next will once again be opening its doors at 5am on 27 December. Baffling as it may be, there are always queues for this middle-of-the-night shopping spree. From then on, cities will come alive again. Clery's will be offering free breakfast to the first 100 shoppers and Christmas spirit will be well and truly forgotten amidst the scuffle for bargains.

This year, shoppers surpassed all expectations by notching up an estimated Euro1.5bn in spending over the Christmas period. "It has been an extremely strong retail period in Ireland this year, " said SeÙ?n Murphy of the Chambers of Commerce of Ireland. "We are estimating that spending is up 6-8% on last year, and that's being conservative."

Dublin city centre has never been busier, with daily footfall count estimates of 120,000 and higher. "A good trading day gives a footfall count of about 80,000, " said Tom Coffey of the Dublin City Business Association.

"This last month has been unbelievably busy. There are an awful lot of people out on the high streets."

With the sales coming, this trend is only going to continue. Shopping, anyone?

DEPARTMENT STORES Arnotts: Sale kicks off on Wednesday 27 December at 10am with 30% off labels such as Miss Sixty, Seven, French Connection and Ted Baker. The lingerie department is bracing itself for riots as the highly popular Elle McPherson range will be reduced by 30% while hosiery is going for half price. There will be 30% off men's suits, while all Barkers shoes are reduced to Euro100. Snuggledown duvets will be reduced by 50% in the homewares department. Cosy.

Brown Thomas: Sale starts at 9am on 27 December in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and BT2 stores nationwide.

Reductions of 20-50% will be made throughout the stores.

Clery's: Sale starts 9am on 27 December, with the first 100 customers receiving a free full Irish breakfast. Marks and Spencer: Marks and Spencer did not want to reveal when its sale will be starting or what will be on offer.

    Mysterious.

Penneys: A spokeswoman for Penneys confirmed that it doesn't have sales as its prices are so low all year round. "Every day is a sale in here, " she said.

Just back from PC world sale.
Very disappointing for PCs. There was nothing there that I considered better value for money than anything on the Dell site right now.
They did seem to have some nice deals if u r looking for a digi camera, or a small accessory like that, but on the whole, i think it was a let down.
Anyone any idea where I can pick up a gamer spec PC bargain on the xmas sales?

Dislike Maplin anyway, I never saw the point in that place to be honest.

Dragged myself out of the bed early for this, and was 12th in the queue after getting there @ 7.15. Sitting around in the cold and light rain, watching one of the group of lads ahead of us climb the O Connell St christmas tree, it was all worth it when we got 2 of the beds, not a bad mornings work €1500 ish of savings.

The guy who was 1st in the queue was waiting for a 32" Philips CRT TV which was reduced to €200 from just over 800, it appears though the marketing people in Clearys thought he deserved better having queued from 1.50 last night and when they came back out @ 8.50 with the vouchers they had upgraded him to a 42" RearProjection TV for €200. So he was more than happy as was the girl who got her €100 SMEG

In my experience you just have to wait a while, men don't tend to descend en masse on the 27th so if you keep a cool head the reductions tend to get better a few weeks into the sale. Brown Thomas/BT2 in particular tend to go down to 75% off a few weeks in. I have also got very nice suits (Armani and Canali) in FX Kelly and Louis Copeland at 50% or more off. Benetton can also be very good, although I'd put their stuff at very good value even at the non-sale prices.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,149 ✭✭✭BFassassin

Very nice of them to upgrade the guy like that.
I might be going up to dub tomorrow so will there be anything to look out for? Mainly around O' Connell Street area

I see Currys are selling the Canon 400D SLR for €799. €300 off. Me ar$e. I have never seen it on sale for more than €799 since it was released. Gangsters!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,440 ✭✭✭✭Piste

The Next sale in Cork was quite dissappointing, the clothes weren't up to much (and next usually have nice clothes) and the changing rooms were shut so there was no way I was going to risk buying something that looked/fitted badly.

The Schuh sale is fantastic, loads of really nice shoes generously marked down, I got a pair of €125 boots for €80 and am thinking of getting a pair of really adorable ankle which are marked from over €100 to about €70.

River Island also have a nice sale on, I got a gorgeous skirt there for only €20, and Oasis have great reductions, got a pair of €86 euro jeans for €43. I love a good bargain I do :)

If they're advertising it as €300 off, then they should have been selling it for €1099 for at least a month before advertising the "reduced" price. If that's not the case, then they're breaking the law and you can report them.

Next sale in Grafton Street was pants, they had all the **** clothes out and changing rooms closed. Arnotts not great but picked up a few things. Pretty quiet in town today too, hangovers or weather putting people off I think.

This is true but AFAIK if they were selling it in any one of their branches for the proper price (€1099) than they are ok otherwise call the ombudsman!!!

Er hello? Are we talking about the same 'town'?

I was up and down Grafton St. a few times myself today and it was as busy as I've ever seen it.

BT's 'sale' was pathetic. Usually they have the old season Gant stuff heavily discounted, but they were just offering 30% a very limited amount while rolling out the new season stuff without a discount. Some OK bargains on mens' suits (Paul Smith, Canali, Zegna, Boss) but nothing to set the world on fire.

Suitable Company were a big let down this year. Normally they'll bang out Armani suits quite cheaply, but they didn't seem to have any in stock. Just a couple of Versace suits for about €595 down from €895.

A very poor range of suits in all the above shops. There was a nice Charvet shirt in BT discounted from €210 to €140 in BT's, but I can buy something very similar in TK Maxx for about €30.

All in all, a bit of a letdown this year.

Was in River Island today. Picked up a few things at good prices but like Next, they had the changing rooms shut and so I managed to come home with a pair of trousers that don't fit.

    Terrible sales!

I was in: Arnotts, River Island, Topman, Jack and Jones.

As usual, they cart out all the crap, and move the proper clothes into the storeroom. In all 4 shops I had to ask the staff "do you have any non-sale clothes?" but none of the staff could help me.

Sales (for men anyway) are not about normal clothes being marked down cheaper, but rather an excuse to get rid of the horrible clothes from a few seasons ago!

HMV was crap. Wasn't even a sale just there normal discounts!
Arnotts seemingly are phasing there sale. Was in sports dept and all they had were asics and reebok runners, asked about some football boots and was told they weren't on sale yet?

Next always have their changing room shut on at least the first day of their sale. However you are able to return unsuitable items on the same terms as buying from them on a normal day. I would presume that River Island has the same policy, if not you probably should have asked before you purchased.
