This is perhaps a woefully stupid question, but at this extremely late stage in the morning, the phrase "after hours" has began to puzzle me somewhat.

    What comes after "hours"?

I challenge you to answer that.

Perhaps this would be best moved to the etymology/linguistics forum. In advance.

    instinctivly I would answer

    minutes.. then seconds

however.... more abstract and I would answer cold night air and then onset of soberness .. possibly coupled with a takeaway and taxi ride

After hours ends when people who have had a good night's sleep start posting and those who are still awake scuttle off to bed.

edit: which would be about now. oiche mhaith!

Since hours are a definition used by all earthlings we will probably use it forever.
Maybe there will be earth-hours, mars-hours and space-hours after hours?

I always saw "after "hours" as those hours after the pub closes that people are at the stage of yabbering complete crap, with the odd bit of genius thrown in...:)

I gotta say, I'm kinda suprised at the amount of responses to this one. I was rather drunk when I posted that last night. Rather very.

    According to my dictionary:
Hourglass comes after "Hour" which incorperates "Hours".
"House" comes after if you count the "S"
