The 9999 code worked for unlocking to region free. Very happy today. Also reads cd-rws flawlessly.

    Chuffed! :-)

What kind of movie files work for you? eg divx, xvid, rm, quicktime, mkv?

While not the same model, it's likely the hardware is pretty similar, so this german review of the kh 6511 which has at the end a detailed list the media it plays, might be helpful. The only format I would expect it to play are mpeg1,2,4 and not rm, qt etc. Using babelfish or world lingo you should be able to translate the page into something more readable if you want

I bought the one in Aldi a few weeks back. Very satisfied.
This Lidl one is actually cheaper and has the USB port.

The only movie format I found that the Aldi one wouldn't play was quicktime.
Seriously, even if it turns out to be rubbish it's worth the risk.
Next best thing to a modded xbox imo

EDIT: I'm not sure about RealMedia files actually.

Quoted for truth, xbox wins because of updatable software, network support, and upgradable 10GB hard drive.

But lacks usable media usb ports, a card reader and hdmi output obviously.

Anywhere in the country that there are any of these left? Willing to travel for a couple of them.

Nope, sold out nationwide, rang Lidl's Irish freephone number on Tuesday.

    :(

    Thanks for that

Anyone know of a similar machine out there on the web that has an inbuilt card reader for under €100?

I bought a Silvercrest KH 6515 from Lidl this week and I also have the Aldi /Tevion DivX DVD player one from a few months back.

The Silvercrest unit has the Zoran chipset... I know because I bought two and on one of the units, the USB connector was pushed into the player body and a screw was rattling around inside. I brought it back to Lidl but they didn't have any replacements so I opened it up and found the loose screw and screwed the USB board back into place - on the way noticing the Zoran chipset I think!

IMO the video playback (Xvid,DivX 3, 5, 6 tried so far) on the Silvercrest unit is far better / smoother than the Aldi unit (Aldi Unit doesn't do DivX6). Its obviously able to handle higher bitrates better than the Aldi/Tevion unit. The user interface is also far better on the Silvercrest unit but it is much slower at initially displaying filelists and starting playback (maybe it has a bigger buffer)! it takes a good while to scan a DVD with AVI files and takes an age to scan a USB 250GB HD - (sometimes hangs scanning the HD).

The Aldi unit has a user interface similar to some HDD MPEG4 players I've seen and is quicker at initially displaying file lists but is very limited in the number of characters it displays from file/folder names which is annoying (I think it only shows 8 or 9 characters). The Lidl/Silvercrest unit displays more - maybe 16.

I haven't tired the HDMI DVI output as I don't have a HDMi cable. Has anyone got any recommendations on where to get a DHMI cable reasonably?

Also, cant see much of a difference between the hdmi output at 720p and the component output of my tevion dvd recorder (lidl had last christmas). Seems both to be the same.

    Hi,

Do you mean you can upscale the Divx or DVD to 720p with the Silvercrest ?

I had a 80 gig HD formatted to FAT32 and the player would not pick it up , did you use partition magic to format the drive or windows ? Anyone else have problems conecting an external drive ?

These units were on special in my local Lidl again last Thursday, which suprised me as I hadn't noticed the player in the specials leaflet that comes through the letterbox weekly.
I only spotted it on the poster when in Lidl today, and thinking they were on special this Thursday, I asked one of the staff how many units they would be getting in, he told me they had a couple left in the back and he would get one for me!

Been playing around with it for a while and so far has played everything I've thrown at it, well worth the money.

    Which Lidl was that?

oh ffs. They have a new one in this week, for €50, but it doesnt have hdmi output :( It's basically the same player though afaik.

I REALLY wanted this particular model (the one this thread is based on) any other lidls have it for any freak reason?

Ask the store managers. Thats the only way at this point. You might get lucky.

Can anyone tell me where they saw this model for sale between Cavan and Dublin within the last few days as I'd love to get my hands on one?

    Cheers! ;)

Somthing to keep in mind.... I got the Silvercrest DVD player from Lidl last week, the USB and Card reader are restricted to 512MB which is a pain in the arse n not much use for watchin divx movies. They only tell you this in the manual after you've opened the player & the file structue is limited to 2 levels... Its still a great value player but dont expect to connect a External HD

    Anyone seen this ????????

B.T.W - this wasnt the HD player its the one that was on sale last week for 50euro

There's a thread for that here

I think I remember it said that although the manual specifies a 512mb limit larger capacities can and will work.
