Lidl hdmi divx dvd player - oct 16th

Anyone seen this? €60 for a dvd player,

• that can output through hdmi,
• divx playback support

• front usb port for mp3 players, flash drives, external hard drives etc...

• front 7 in 1 card reader

Available in white or black, doesnt come with a hdmi cable sadly, but does come with a SCART.

Looks excellent tbh. (3 year gaurantee too)

Gonna pick one up myself, buy a hdmi cable, and I will have the unit ready to connect to my new hdtv I hope to get this side of xmas. The deal seems to good to let pass by. Finally a media player that almost rivals a modded xbox

yes seen this on the lidl weekly catalogue and does look a bargain,would be interesting to hear the reports on it with the hdmi cable hooked up to hd tv.
i,ll be having one of these dvd players also,but don,t you really need hd dvd discs to truly discover the quality of picture?.

yes, there is no hd-dvd players on the market yet, and very few hd dvd movies are available, and you'd prolly have to buy them/pre-order them online. Hd-dvd is an entirely new disc format.

The fact this player has hdmi, simply means it can UPSCALE standard dvds/divx files, to hd resolutions, but it's not coming from an actual hd source (your dvd/file) so therefore it's not proper hd.

If you want proper hd -

Buy a hd ready tv
Buy a hd dvd player, or 360 with hd dvd player add on
And finally, buy a hd-dvd movie.

I'm planning on buying a 26' sony bravia this side of xmas (dont think I'll have the cash though) I decided sony purely cause there latest bravia sets are the only ones with every connection I require.

I have a DVD player with 3 phono outs on the back for my amp, is this the norm for DVD players now.

Yes, digital coaxial and optical

standard audio out (red/white)

mini-din 6 pin audio out (looks a bit like an s-video connection, but for audio output on older sound systems)

Whats the model number of that DVD player, can check online if its region free (more than likely it can be patched to make it that way).

had a chat about this and a work colleague said that external hard drives needed to be formated to Fat32 format and not NTFS.
If formatted to Fat32 (correct me if I'm wrong) then the old aldi one will detect it and play the movies.

is this correct - if so - is it possible to get a program to format a hd in fat32 instead of having a windows 98 pc to do it !!!

The maximum file size on a Fat 32 formatted drive is 4 GB , that means that most movies ripped directly from a DVD ( even using DVD shrink ) will not transfer to the drive , so no movies will be playable from the drive unless compressed lower than 4 GB , that would mean Divx only ! And a corresponding loss of quality to keep down the file size !!

But you wouldn't be playing dvd files from the external hdd, you'd be playing divx/avi. And I for one dont have any single video files that exceed 4gb :rolleyes:

If you want to properly rip actual dvds, burn them to a disc, and then stick them in.

A dvd splits it's files into 1gb chunks, it's not one big file.

You can format a larger HDD to FAT32, you just can't do it through XP or Windows 2000. You could use partition magic to do it in either of these operating systems. Or get a DOS boot disk and do it from that.

I learnt the hard way, I got one of those 50gb drives from PC world, had a disk error and formatted the drive to NFTS, then it wouldn't work with the telly, had to find a way of formatting to FAT32.

You can do a format to FAT32 with the disk management tool in xp. You'll find it under control panal...administrative tools... computer management

A dvd splits it's files into 1gb chunks, it's not one big file

When you rip DVD's to a hard drive using either DVDdecrypter or DVDshrink , it only splits into 1 gig chunks if you tell it too , otherwise its one big file ,

If you split , then the player you are using needs to be able to recognise the individual files as making one movie , something most DVD players cannot do over a USB connection ... unfortunately ,

But you wouldn't be playing dvd files from the external hdd, you'd be playing divx/avi. And I for one dont have any single video files that exceed 4gb

Then you obviously dont have a camcorder ? ... Most mini DV camcorders produce massive files if you want to keep the full SD res of 576 lines , my camcorder is as cheap as chips , a canon MV900 , a 1 hour mini DV tape at full res is a 12 gig file ! And FAT 32 is crap for that !

Yes, DVDdecrypter will work as you say, just depends on how you rip you dvd's. Can DVD shrink give you a large raw mpeg2 file? I though it only outputed a dvd type folder, or an iso, but not a continuos video file.

In any case the custom or manual compression slider in dvd shrink should let you shrink the dvd size down to below 4gb, just take it off the automatic compression setting. If you then want a single video file dvd decrypter could be used

now some you folk seem to know a bit about avi/divx files so maybe you can help ?
when I burn divx files to cd or when I convert them to DVD format & burn to DVD the picture on my 16:9 TV is zoomed, see pics below.
Using the zoom function on my TV or DVD does not correct this as it's either to much or to little,...how can I correct this

I doubt it upscales. They'd mention it as a feature if it did.

I burn avi files as data to CDR and DVDr's using Nero. I also burn avi's as dvds using nero without your problem.

Are you doing play back on a PC ar on a standalaone divx player?

before buying a dvd player with divx playback make sure the xvid is supported as i got stung a philips dvd player i got and it dont read xvid whitch is a very popular format now .

I got one this morning... haven't had time to check it out yet though.

They had plenty of them in the Lidl in Coolock though.. both silver and black. I walked in and the place was very quiet at around 9.15.

mp4 divx xvid rat dvd etc...
there was a dvd player in power city a while ago i brought the dvd with me tecknotron or sumtin played the whole lot..but horrible lookn thing .lol

Says you can choose what resolution you want (upto 1080i) to output for hdmi.
So i assume this means it upscales to the resolution you specify. Is this right?

Need to get it region free now.
