I likes this episode gave it an 8 was better than last weeks.

I didn’t like the sun flashbacks, it was irrelevant to the story line at hand IMO!
However the guy she was sleeping with, didn't they have a blind date before she met Jin, she liked him but he just used the date as a way of getting his mum off his back?

something interesting, when she brings jack soup and Henry goes " you never brought me soup" that just stood out, perhaps when he was recovering from sayad beating him up she never cared for him, perhaps they do have history.

Now we move onto sawyer, brill I do think he carries the show quite a bit sometimes, his scenes once again pure gold, testing out the others whilst getting a bit of Kate "freckles you taste like strawberries" :D

Now the most interesting part is without a doubt the last 5 mins or so. Henry introduces himself and then says, "ive been on this island all my life"
Id imagine henry to be late 30’s early 40’s ?
Jack says if u could get off why would you still be here, and he goes "yes jack why wouldn’t we"
He also tells jack that they do have an outside connection with the world, shows him a tap of redsox winning world series when jack doesn't believe him and also tells jack " HE WILL yes HE WILL take him home"

Good episode it’s heating up :D

were we watching the same episode.. i recall it going something like:

"Have you got soup? Why didn't I get any soup?"

    "Coffee"

"Why don't you use a cup like any other human being?"

"Why don't you wash up occasionally like any other human being?"

"How dare you!? How dare you!? How dare you call me inhumane!?"

"I didn't call you inhumane, you merely imagined it. Calm down."

I dunno, it was all about betrayal and lying wasnt it? Which seems to be a major theme these days.

Apparently things progressed since then, i seem to remember an episode where he was teaching her English so she could escape Jin? 2+2 = nekkid sun ;-)

And you taste like fish biscuit.

I got the impression he wanted her primarily, with the fighting secondary, there was a "eh, i better cover for this" moment when they got back to the cages. he's a sly dawg, that sawyer.

I thought this was a cracking episode. Unlike many others, I've always liked Sun's backstory, and this episode answered several questions. It also brought it a step closer to closure, which makes me wonder as to the future in the show of the couple! And Sun shot someone - wasn't expecting that. No doubt we will see Dr. Jack to the rescue next week.

Sawyer and Freckles got together - like that wasn't going to happen. I guess Jack better start looking elsewhere now. And obviously putting Kate in that dress breaking rocks was one ratings boost idea that made it from conception to the final cut of the script!

So now we know Ben's name, and that he has lived on the island all his life. I don't understand that. But as he's older than 30, this means he was there before Dharma. So perhaps Dharma people are still there and they are the enemy. Although Sawyer's synopsis of the other's fighting abilities was designed to make us think that they could be scientists rather than army people. But Juliet was different. Perhaps Ben was in the situation that Jack now finds himself in once, and that's why he said, "you never made me soup". The other woman (Coleen?) seemed pissed that they were talking, even though she looked like she was in a relationship with one of Mr. Friendly's honchos.

I loved Jack and Ben's interaction re the Boston Red Sox. Perhaps a bit of an American in-joke, but I thought it was great. No jokes about Dubya though. Pity!

I really thought that epsiode was excellent.
I have always liked the sun fb episodes, some really great acting going on.
There have some truly baffling posts about the backstories being totally unnecessary....I just don't see it that way at all, it's becoming more and more apparent that their backstories were responsible in some way for leading them to the Island.
Epsiode was really clever in not giving anything away. They(others)seemed really worried that they had a boat, interesting. It looks they are just using the information they have obtained through monitorisation to manipulate the losties.
'You're not even supposed to be that in cage' was the most mysterious line from the episode as if Sawyer should be in the cage and that they've made a mistake about Kate......? or was she talking about Carl.......
That Ben was going to be monitoring them from behuind that door was a given since last weeks ep and it was reassuring to see that cameras have an audio feed aswell.
Bens name is Linus probably after the Guy who won 2 nobel Prizes one of them for the study and chemical relationships and electromagnetism!
'That's why the Red Sox will never win the series'
Didn't christian say this to Jack before...that is just weird..that scene was great
Ben says home is on the other sdie of that glass...also a very teasing line from the writers in light of all the recent VR theories.
    BTW
I think Henry is going to ask Jack for
    his services as a
doctor, in light of one of them being shot
Lost gets more curious every week and I have to say I'm loving it.

    Really enjoyed the episode.

I'm not a fan of Sun/Jin back stories but it was one of their better ones, the island stuff was brilliant though. Both what happened with Sawyer and especially Jack and Ben at the end.

Loved the Redsox refererence especially but the whole conversation is just building and building the mystery, but it also feels like its taking us closer to getting some real answers about the others. I've a good feeling about this series there's been two solid episodes now despite covering my two least characters for flashbacks...

    Good episode, enjoyed it.

Did Sun's lover think Jin came to him because he found out about the affair.
Therefore, he thought he would never have Sun so he jumped.
This would be why he was grasping the necklace.

Or did he jump from the shame as Sun's father suggested.

Or, (least likely)did Sun's oul lad follow Jin to make sure the job was done.

Not sure why i thought about this part so much..... :)

    Kate's ass = :D

well at least we cop on to the title straight away this time. though dammit looks like it's a Sun and who-do-ya-call-him episode. not my favs. oh well back to watchin.

k finished watchin it now. k what the hell is up with last few minutes? by all his life does he mean he was born there too? or was he sent there as a child.

and whats up with the continuing we're the good guys thing

"i am not the enemy we are not the enemy but if yoo shoot me thats exactly what we'll become"

that line seems a bit odd to me

I must admit that I wasn't overly fond of this episode. It might need another viewing though. It just seemed to drag on a bit too much for me, especially after last weeks episode which I though was fantastic.

Not bad, better than last weeks. I don't like the Sun/Jin flashbacks, they just don't interest me.

But the rest of the stuff on the island was good. Ben has been there his whole life?? And they do have contact with the outside world.Glad they answered something, even if it was very small.

I found the inclusion of the Red Sox winning the world series to be kinda interesting. When the show was being written, and they were formulating the script, they couldn't have known that the Red Sox were about to win the World Series. Hence the inclusion of the lines about "Some people were born to suffer. Thats why the Red Sox will never win the damn series".

Now, 3 series in, they have Jack being shown a clip of the Red Sox winning the world series. Is that just a humourous nod to co-incidence, or have they written it into Jack's story so as to change his behaviour in some way? This is the second time that Christian Shephard's words have come to Jack whilst in the cell. To me, that seems a lot more meaningful. What does it mean to Jack that the Red Sox finally won the series? That some people aren't meant to suffer? That its ok to trust The Others? And if that is the case, is it all a trick?

To summarise this episode: isn't it amazing how 4 minutes with Michael Emerson on screen can overshadow the entire 38 minutes preceding it?

That was the best bit of the episode by far in my eyes. Those 4 minutes with Ben revealing to Jack exactly what has been going on in the outside world since Oceanic 815 brought them down. And will Jack, essentially the hero of the show (whether people like it or not), betray his fellow castaways to get his way? I'd really REALLY doubt it!

The Sun and Jin stuff was all a bit meh.. but never liked their backstories. We already knew they had a troubled relationship and marriage. The affair was just yet another secret Sun kept from her hubby. Not exactly revealing stuff in that backstory. On the upside however.. the fact that this is outta the way probably won't be another Jin / Sun backstory for a while!

The Kate / Sawyer stuff was very good though.. some great lines from Sawyer doing his best Michael Clarke Duncan impression ("yes bosss!"). Funniest bit of the episode was Sawyer's enticed face to Kate at the prospect of her working nude and then his sudden "how dare you!" response.

Oh and we saw Alex put in a brief but lacklustre re-appearance. Now begs the question.. what did she do to pi*s the Others off? Last time we saw her she refused to bring Kate out as a captive to Jack, Sawyer and the bunch last season.

But the Ben and Jack stuff really made this episode... interesting, funny and a cliffhanger on Jack's shoulders.

Looking forward to next week after that ending!

EDIT: Never really caught the Red Sox reference... but love Mr Angry's theory above. Seeing as that line "...that's why the Red Sox will never win the damn series" appeared in Outlaws nearer the end of the first season, i presumed the Red Sox had won it by that point.. let me check my dates..

    Outlaws: 16 February 2005
Red Sox win World Series: October 27 2004

Yeah.. i guess they had. Some fantastic writing to bring this up a season and a half after the line first appeared.

PS - it's worth mentioning Drew Goddard wrote both the episode 'Outlaws' (where the Red Sox line first appeared) and this week's episode .. so more than a coincidence methinks!

Loved this episode. Gave it a 9.

Sun and Jin's flashbacks didn't bore me as much as usual. The auld man in it kept me entertained by having the ability to pop out of the one place sun doesn't want him to.

As for the island storyline, I completely agree with Basquille. BENJAMIN DA MAN! Seriously. As soon as we saw him watching Sawyer blurt out his plan to Kate, the episode turned into gold. Allbeit it was 5 mins. Hope Jack goes too, he's still annoying although he hasn't been as bad towards the end of s2 and start of s3.

The scene with the others coming onto the boat and Sun shooting yer one was cool too. Mefeels the rest of the survivors could be in bother when da man (Benjamin) finds out she's dead.

And Sawyer came out with some classic lines with the whole "Yes boss!" craic. The cuteness of him too when he kissed Kate to see how the others would react....

Gave it a 9 and from the looks of next weeks eppy promo, it's gonna get even better...

    There was lots of small things that made this good I thought;

The afore mentioned reaction of Sawyer when the other guy suggested Kate work in the nude was classic. I'm surprised no-one's brought it up by now, but it looked like they were preparing a site for building, i wonder what.

The reaction of Juliet to Sawyers rebellion. She seems to remain calm and in control no matter what the situation, and has an independent streak (she didnt bring henry soup while he waited in the small room and observed Jack, Kate and Sawyer). She is hiding something, and it's something big I imagine.

I've noticed Sayid's arrogance before now and it showed up again tonight as he blithely spun his lies. He really really REALLY hates the others and wants revenge more than anything else, I pity the other that falls into his hands. When he said they had a long walk ahead, i wonder if he plans on heading back to the "home beach" or off along the coast in the direction the boat went.

Speaking of lying, god old Sun, SHE SHOT SOMEONE. Albeit by accident (kind of), she was the last person I expected to pull a trigger on someone (well, maybe Aaron was the last I expected). Her lies continue too, flashbacks reveal she's always had a problem with telling the truth, and knowing TV, it will all blow up on her quite soon (...waits for next Sun/Jin flashback episode). I wonder will the trio have muc of an adventure on their way to...wherever they're going.

Alex's popping up was a nice addition. It was interesting she asked about Carl. He wouldn't have been in the cage if he hadn't disobeyed, just like Alex has been. And they're around the same age. I wonder is there a romantic interest, and they're doing a little rebellion thing together, or is it something about their age that sets them apart. I probably wouldn't have thouht anything of it except Alex explicitly said he was about her age. Is there any chance he came from the French science team too?

And poor Ben, his dismay as Jack refused to believe the red sox had one. He looked really put out in a comical way as he insisted it was true. His scene really did steal the show tonight. I wonder what he will want Jack to do to buy his freedom.

Good character episode all round, not quite a classic, but still way more than a filler. I shall give it an 8. Roll on next week, just hope we get some action from Hurley's cross country trek and/or Eko, Des, Locke in the aftermath of the hatch explosion and/or Claire, Charlie, Bernard, Rose and trying to re-establish leadership on the beach.

Enjoyed the episode more than last weeks (disappointing for a season opener).

Enjoyed the Ben/Jack scene and Jack's disbelief that the Red Sox curse of the Bambino had been broken.

    Google returned:
"Nothing much has worked since 1920, when Ruth was sold by the Red Sox to the Yankees and the "Curse of the Bambino" began. Boston has never won the World Series since [until after the oceanic crash in 2004]..."

I remember watching a TV show on American TV about the "curse" a few years ago and people really believed that the Red Sox were cursed by the sale of Babe Ruth and that they would never win a World Series ever again. They had been close on many occasion but never quite close enough, 80 odd years is more than a lifetime for most if not all Red Sox fans. Hence, Jacks complete disbelief...

Towards the end there I thought Ben was actually gonna say something worthwhile but then the whole baseball thing was all that happened. Kinda pissed me off to be quite honest.

Not the best ep/not the worst, I suppose. For a Sun/Jin episode it was alright I guess..

how can u say hesaid nothing at all, he said he was on the island "all his life" and they had "a link to the outside" pretty big to me, not to mention the fact he said " I will bring u there " when he was on about bringing jack home.

Much better than last week. Actually feels like they might be going somewhere again.

Not much to add to what people have already said.. Sawyer was great as usual, and Ben stole the show at the end. The Red Socks bit was good... I guess someone who follows baseball might have seen something like that coming (I had no idea the Red Socks won anything, or of any 'curse' or whatever).

Also gave us quite a bit of info at the end, for once. Ben's been there all his life, etc., and also filling us in as to the current date and just how long they've been on the island, which was good and handled well enough.

When I was watching I assumed that Jin knew about the affair - I still do. It's obvious that Sun doesn't realise this from her comments to her father. It's still interesting that Sun was still planning to leave Jin even after Jae's (sp?) death.

Ben's revalation that he has lived on the island all his life maybe a little misleading. I have the suspicion that the Others have limited memory i.e. 15-20 years or so - maybe due to Dharma experiments. One thing is for certain - they were on the island long before Danielle!

The Red Sox reference has so many levels. In the US the fact that the Sox won the series is a BIG thing - especially the way it was won. Hence Jack's disbelief. However, I think it also shows that nothing can be taken for granted. Ben used the Red Sox reference for a reason - to show Jack that even the most improbable can be true. I think this will bear out sometime during the series.

Ben's answer to Jack question about leaving the island is also interesting. It infers that the island has more to offer than the "Real World". Maybe the healing powers of the island is the deciding factor for most of the Others - i.e. thay have a serious illness that was cured and by leaving they are afraid it will come back.

    Juliette acts like a doctor.

The Others are definately building something. I also got the impression that there were more people working than just Sawyer and Kate. Whether these were other prisioners or just Others I don't know - however, the tazer things looked like they had been in use for quite a while leading me to believe that not all the Others are happy with the situation.

    9/10.

    Very solid.

Suprised more folk didn't mention Kate in the dress working *shrug*

Excellent scenes with Jack & Ben and Sawyer/James & Kate. *zing* with Ben watching them on cam tho :)

    Bring on next week.

I think we all know that Jack is mentally the weakest of all three, hence he was separated from Sawyer and Kate and worked over. It took a whopping 48 hrs (approx) to bring Jack to breaking point. Granted Benry knows what buttons to press, but still...

I don't know what they need him to do but I would be astounded if it was for his medical skills as:
    a) they probably wouldn't have survived as long as they have without some kind of a doctor (possibly Juliette as mentioned above), unless someone needs urgent spinal surgery. Anyway, Claire's abduction flashback, if true, clearly showed some kind of operating theatre; and
    b) the island has magical healing powers anyway.

Sawyer is unlucky that Ben overheard his plan, but what's Ben going to do? Try not to make any mistakes, which he was going to do anyway? Sawyer is easily the best character on the show cause he's its source of humour, he takes no crap and he's also capable of outwitting people.

    I also liked
    "Kate, wear this dress."
    "Why?"
"It'll boost the ratings, trust me."

What I found most intruiging hasn't been mentioned here much. They didn't know about the boat. They therefore didn't know Kelvin spent THREE YEARS fixing it (great surveillance job there). Were they even watching the Swan in that time? If not, why not? I smell a writing mistake.....

the height of mediocrity. I have always HATED sun and jin and their flashbacks, but thats not to be interpreted as racism, its just that they're so bland and boring and sun brings absolutely nothing to the show. i have some respect for jin because at the end of the day, he was Agent Baker in 24! but seriously, I hope something bad happens them and they get killed off or something. Does anyone actually enjoy watching interaction between sun and jin? bens talk was half interesting, nothing MAJOR new revealed other than confirming what was nodded at last week; contact with the outside world. The fact that he has lived his entire life on the island could also easily be a lie. Doubtful, but plausible. The show as a whole shud pick up next week, the promo looks like it might,
oooh finally some craic with the monster again!
but those things are so deceptive, the amount of things that they can suggest and hint at with quick cuts and then the episode turns out to be something in another direction completely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,945 ✭✭✭Anima

    5
Well there was talk at the end of S2 that time on the island maybe moving faster or slower than the outside world. So its quite possible that Benry could of lived there all his life. 20 years of the real worlds time could be 50+ on the island .

Great episode, really enjoyed it. Good bit better then last weeks episode imo.

I normally dislike the sun flashbacks but this week I thought they were quite good, quite revealing. It confirms Jin is not the father, interesting to see how that develops!

The island scenes were very interesting, both the sayed and sawyer parts were very good but without doubt the highlight was final few minutes. This is possibly 1 of my favourite endings ever, every scene with Ben is just fantastic. For all those non baseball fans out there, it's hard to over emphasise how big the whole story is especially for Jack who was red sox fan, you should read this to understand it and if nothing else because it covers 1 of the greatest sporting comebacks ever

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curse_of_the_bambino

I don't think it means anything bigger then fact to prove they have contact with outside world and for a red sox fan like Jack this would be bigger then seeing Bush re-elected so this was the most effective way of getting through to him.

So Sun is a lying whore.

I liked the way they made you think that Jack was going to say "I can't believe the re-elected George W. Bush" but instead mentioned the Red Sox. Maybe that was a nudge nude wink wink to people outside America....?

Ben's "You never brought me soup" comment - is that a reference to a previous relationship with Juliette or a reference to him being brain-washed into an Other in a similar way to that which Jack is possibly being subjected to?

Well for me it does, Sun claimed she didn't have an affair when she found she was pregnant, she did and Jin can't father a baby, it seems pretty obvious to me but it is Lost I suppose so never quite know.

Havent seen anyone mention this, but they wheeled a damn TV in to show Jack a tape to prove to him that they had a real connection to the outside world.

Why on earth would they choose the event of the Red Sox winning the world series to be the one thing they would show him to prove it and how would that be the one thing they would have to prove to him?

I really think the connection to his dads line about the Red Sox never winning the series is huge here. Huge.

Yea, bit of a deus ex machina that, but then this is Lost (king of the deus ex machinas tbh).

They could have at least had a fancier digital system and flicked to the appropriate scene (looked like plain old tape to me), or even showed him fast forwarding a bit to find the relevant content, but nope.. they've got exactly what's needed at the touch of a button.

Meh, willing to let it slide because it's still the coolest thing that's happened in Lost for a while. Maybe they knew he was a big Red Socks fan?

Exactly my point, I think it will tie into the fact that they want him to change his attitude.

Lets not forgot that Ben almost says:

"I want you to change your attitude" but checks himself and says "I want you to change your perspective".

So basically, I think they want to teach Jack not give up on himself or on things he believes in. They obviously see the Red Sox winning the world series as an important part of driving him to this destination.

    Hadn't thought of that.

Unlikely I think, but it would be nice.

I wonder if Ben uses Bit Torrents to get his programming from the outside world...

Another good ep. Enjoyed the Jin/Sun back story as it confirmed that Sun's pregancy is probably not a "miracle". That along with the fact that we currently don't know the reason Locke couldn't walk lessons the evidence that the island has magical healing properties.

I think it's still possible that Jin doesn't know about the affair Sun had. Her father set in motion events that led to bald headed dude's death tied up. He really thought that Jin knew and that shame along with Sun's rejection led to his suicide. Neatly done. Jin doesn't commit murder but in his father in laws eyes he has "delivered the message".

The Others do have access to the outside world. Which means that the Others are staying on the Island for a reason. Maybe they can only recieve data and not send it or not want to send it.

Transport between the island and the rest of the world may be impossible. This is backed up by the lack of new equipment, the lack of heavy machinary (requiring forced labour to develop new facilities).

I would lean towards the theory that travel off the island is difficult but that it isn't impossible. I think Ben and most of the Others don't want contact with the outside world. I say most because I would speculate that there is a faction that do want to leave. Alex and Carl for example. They are both younger than the main Others characters and therefore may not agree that staying on the island is a good thing.

I found Ben's comment about the soup to be very interesting. It adds weight that there's a process to becoming an Other. I still think Jack, Sawyer and Kate have been chosen to go through that process. Which is why Ben is studying them a lot.

I hope we get to find out what's going on with the rest of the Oceanic people next episode. I miss Hurley :)

Hmm on the issue of Sun's pregnancy - I guess we won't know unless we can get some sort of time reference from the affair with Jae to their being on the island. If too much time has elapsed since then then perhaps the island does have healing powers of some sort.

Overall a good episode. Better than last week anyway.

    I gave it a 7

The Kate / Sawyer stuff was very good though.. some great lines from Sawyer doing his best Michael Clarke Duncan impression ("yes bosss!").

I think you'll find it's probably more a Paul Newman 'Cool Hand Luke' impression. "Wiping it off here boss!" etc. etc.

Yeah but they probably hadn't won the World Series when the episode was shot.

It will be interesting to see what they want Jack to do.

Agree on the Cool Hand Luke thing, thats obviously what he was doing, has been parodied in many a movie and show.

On the Sox subject, episodes of Lost are shot about 3 weeks in advance of being released as far as I know. I'd imagine the Sox had won when it was shot.

red rox won the world series back in 2004 or 2005 not sure on the year but it was the first time they won it in 86 years and it was against their biggest rivals the NY yankies.

I loved this episode and im usually not too crazy for the Sun/Jin episodes.
Its was so great to see Sun plug one of the others. She is the one character who i think has gotten better and better as the show has gone on.

Benry is a total legend, his scenes, along with Sawyer's are always gold. I'm so happy about the way this season has started out, two solid episodes in a row, and im really looking forward to the return of John Locke next week

I liked this one. Thought it brought alot of issues but even more questions.

Kates 2 weeks of pain could be working as a slave. This could be just to break them down and get them to a point where they are willing to do anything rather than do manual labour.

    I also thought of something.

Ben says he's been there all his life. We know the island has healing powers. What if Ben has been there a lot lot longer than the age he looks?
