So Sun is a lying whore.

I liked the way they made you think that Jack was going to say "I can't believe the re-elected George W. Bush" but instead mentioned the Red Sox. Maybe that was a nudge nude wink wink to people outside America....?

Ben's "You never brought me soup" comment - is that a reference to a previous relationship with Juliette or a reference to him being brain-washed into an Other in a similar way to that which Jack is possibly being subjected to?

Well for me it does, Sun claimed she didn't have an affair when she found she was pregnant, she did and Jin can't father a baby, it seems pretty obvious to me but it is Lost I suppose so never quite know.

Havent seen anyone mention this, but they wheeled a damn TV in to show Jack a tape to prove to him that they had a real connection to the outside world.

Why on earth would they choose the event of the Red Sox winning the world series to be the one thing they would show him to prove it and how would that be the one thing they would have to prove to him?

I really think the connection to his dads line about the Red Sox never winning the series is huge here. Huge.

Yea, bit of a deus ex machina that, but then this is Lost (king of the deus ex machinas tbh).

They could have at least had a fancier digital system and flicked to the appropriate scene (looked like plain old tape to me), or even showed him fast forwarding a bit to find the relevant content, but nope.. they've got exactly what's needed at the touch of a button.

Meh, willing to let it slide because it's still the coolest thing that's happened in Lost for a while. Maybe they knew he was a big Red Socks fan?

Exactly my point, I think it will tie into the fact that they want him to change his attitude.

Lets not forgot that Ben almost says:

"I want you to change your attitude" but checks himself and says "I want you to change your perspective".

So basically, I think they want to teach Jack not give up on himself or on things he believes in. They obviously see the Red Sox winning the world series as an important part of driving him to this destination.

    Hadn't thought of that.

Unlikely I think, but it would be nice.

I wonder if Ben uses Bit Torrents to get his programming from the outside world...

Another good ep. Enjoyed the Jin/Sun back story as it confirmed that Sun's pregancy is probably not a "miracle". That along with the fact that we currently don't know the reason Locke couldn't walk lessons the evidence that the island has magical healing properties.

I think it's still possible that Jin doesn't know about the affair Sun had. Her father set in motion events that led to bald headed dude's death tied up. He really thought that Jin knew and that shame along with Sun's rejection led to his suicide. Neatly done. Jin doesn't commit murder but in his father in laws eyes he has "delivered the message".

The Others do have access to the outside world. Which means that the Others are staying on the Island for a reason. Maybe they can only recieve data and not send it or not want to send it.

Transport between the island and the rest of the world may be impossible. This is backed up by the lack of new equipment, the lack of heavy machinary (requiring forced labour to develop new facilities).

I would lean towards the theory that travel off the island is difficult but that it isn't impossible. I think Ben and most of the Others don't want contact with the outside world. I say most because I would speculate that there is a faction that do want to leave. Alex and Carl for example. They are both younger than the main Others characters and therefore may not agree that staying on the island is a good thing.

I found Ben's comment about the soup to be very interesting. It adds weight that there's a process to becoming an Other. I still think Jack, Sawyer and Kate have been chosen to go through that process. Which is why Ben is studying them a lot.

I hope we get to find out what's going on with the rest of the Oceanic people next episode. I miss Hurley :)

Hmm on the issue of Sun's pregnancy - I guess we won't know unless we can get some sort of time reference from the affair with Jae to their being on the island. If too much time has elapsed since then then perhaps the island does have healing powers of some sort.

Overall a good episode. Better than last week anyway.

    I gave it a 7

I think you'll find it's probably more a Paul Newman 'Cool Hand Luke' impression. "Wiping it off here boss!" etc. etc.
EDIT: Never really caught the Red Sox reference... but love Mr Angry's theory above. Seeing as that line "...that's why the Red Sox will never win the damn series" appeared in Outlaws nearer the end of the first season, i presumed the Red Sox had won it by that point.. let me check my dates..

    Outlaws: 16 February 2005
Red Sox win World Series: October 27 2004

Yeah but they probably hadn't won the World Series when the episode was shot.

It will be interesting to see what they want Jack to do.

Agree on the Cool Hand Luke thing, thats obviously what he was doing, has been parodied in many a movie and show.

On the Sox subject, episodes of Lost are shot about 3 weeks in advance of being released as far as I know. I'd imagine the Sox had won when it was shot.

red rox won the world series back in 2004 or 2005 not sure on the year but it was the first time they won it in 86 years and it was against their biggest rivals the NY yankies.

I loved this episode and im usually not too crazy for the Sun/Jin episodes.
Its was so great to see Sun plug one of the others. She is the one character who i think has gotten better and better as the show has gone on.

Benry is a total legend, his scenes, along with Sawyer's are always gold. I'm so happy about the way this season has started out, two solid episodes in a row, and im really looking forward to the return of John Locke next week

I liked this one. Thought it brought alot of issues but even more questions.

Kates 2 weeks of pain could be working as a slave. This could be just to break them down and get them to a point where they are willing to do anything rather than do manual labour.

    I also thought of something.

Ben says he's been there all his life. We know the island has healing powers. What if Ben has been there a lot lot longer than the age he looks?

indeed. but on top of that, it's clearly a joke on the part of the writers here. they know this was a huge anomaly in the world series, because this hasn't happened in 80 odd years... but it did. and they make sure to point out it's 2004.. maybe to let america know it'll be another 80 years :D

Just as a matter of fact - it wasn't against the Yankees - they beat the Yankees in the Divisonal Final - the series that had the great comeback. In the World Series they beat the Cardinals 4-0.

I think one of the reasons Ben used the Red Sox game as a reference was that it was a good indication of time. Since the Sox hadn't won the series in 86 years it was proof that the footage was taken after Jack arrived on the island.

mmmmm, great to watch the episode then wait a few days to see the comments and thoughs patterns of "others", some good stuff here

re Ben being on the island before Darma, did the guy in the looney bin not make reference to the numbers being picked up in WWII which is way before Darma
I remind you of the reference from last season also that the "rest of the world" can't see the island
only when we hear how Michael/my boy got on will this piece make more sense

That new chick who seems to have a lot of authority was doing my head in as to where I'd seen her before, she was a nun in an episode of House...

Feel these 6 epsiodes are going to be a pace setter for a big sixth episode with a mini season finale until we start again next year.

I really enjoyed this episode, much better than last weeks. Sawyer is one of my firm favs at this stage, always makes me laughs.
I must be one of the few who enjoy sun and jin, I don't believe jin was aware of the affair, I have the feeling he would have no problem going further if he had.

They want him to change his perspective and see the island from their point of view. They are not stranded, they have a link to the outside world. They can leave if they choose to do so, but the time has not yet come to do so. The others are not the bad guys - unlike the survivors of the crash they haven't behaved barbaric.

The survivors seem to have a paranoid shoot first ask questions later policy.

Murders? Charlie gunned down Ethan. Anna Lucia shot Shannon. Michael shot Anna Lucia and Libby.
    Sun shoots 'the other' woman
. Mr. Eko beat in the skulls of a couple of the others the night they crashed on the island. Charlie also assaulted Sun. In the violent crime stakes the survivors are streets ahead of the others. Ethan and Goodwin each killed a survivor if I remember correctly. And Locke was also responsible for the death of Boone.

The others have treated those whom they have captured/abducted in a far more civilised manner than the survivors/French woman have.

thats cause they are the good guys! nah but seriously the survivors had a basic fight or flight reaction to most of these events. the others planned and carefully executed their plans

    Excellent episode.

Great scenes from Sawyer and Ben (finally we get a few answers) and my suspicions grow that Kate is has been turned by the Others after showing almost no resistance during the scuffle that Sawyer started. She didnt really try to fight back against them and the next thing you know she standing like a limp doll next to Juliet.

Why was Alex so concerned about Kate wearing her dress?

Does Ben pre-date Dharma? He said he'd been on the island all his life. The Dharma tape reels were time-stamped "1984" I think?

And are there more animals on that part of the island as part of the experiment? This audio was seperated by a user on another board at the scene where Kate and Sawyer are talking towards the end of the episode. He thought he heard something weird in the background and so I separated it out from the surround channels and found this noise. You might have to turn it up a lot, it's very quiet. Could also be the return of Smokey?
