I could live easily without them all except my phone. I don't have an mp3 player anyway, I just listen to the radio most of the time.

    Pretty much, yeah.

I figure 30 days should be more than enough of a challenge for me.

    As to people who are asking what the point is;

This is my own personal experiment to see if I have the willpower and the determination to go a whole 30 days without any of those objects.

Props to you; I know that's going to be tough.

    1) Internet - easy, only use it cause its here
    2) Mobile Phone - way way too hard, would make meeting people etc too tough, i dont have a landline either so i would have no way of contacting people at all.
    3) Laptop - easy, broken mine in the past and gone without it
    4) Television - never watch it anyway, dont even have one to watch
    5) Cinema - go to about 1 **** film a year so dont care about that either.
    6) MP3 - could go watch more live gigs for music.

I think this task would be easier in the summer. I usually only use my mobile during the summer months anyways.

Oh its going to be hugely tough. Anyone that knows me would know that the ones I've chosen are what I spend the majority of my time doing. I think I'll be starting it come November. Have to have to proposals for the project handed up by Monday.

Funnily enough, I email Morgan Spurlock on an address I found on the supersize me website, telling him about my experiment and asking him if he thinks he could last. Not expecting him to reply, but it would be highly cool if I can include it alongside my interviews with people.

Morgan Spurlock is a stupid boring one trick douche.

Morgan Spurlock is a stupid boring one trick douche.

I know, but it might make me seem more favourable if I have a professional, award-winning documentary maker featured.

    Hah.

But its a really dull idea. Its basically what a load of people go through when they move apartment, or anyone who relocates to rural ireland, or anyone who moves to another country or anyone who just loses interest all together.
I just don't understand what you are trying to prove by doing it. OK its of personal interest to you, in a "Can I do this" way, and thats fair enough, but there is no way the rest of the world is gonna be interested in whether or not some guy surfs the net for a month.
Even stupid one-trick douche did his stupid blown out of all proportion douchey crap feigning that he had some vague valid reason for his pedantic boring douche-umentaries.

    1) Internet - No, I need it for college
    2) Mobile Phone - no, I need it for faraway girl
    3) Laptop - Don't want to :D
    4) Television - yes, never watch it anyway.
    5) Cinema - yes.

I am prone to giving things up, like crisps forever, adding salt to things forever. There are no reasons. I think I should stop, giving up phone, lappy and net would just be too much.

I also took a bet that was, for a week where I had to eat and drink only things I had never tried before. It was hell.
    6) MP3

    1) Internet - NO
    2) Mobile Phone - YES (probably)
    3) Laptop - YES
    4) Television - YES (can watch over the internet)
    5) Cinema - YES
    6) MP3 - NO

    1) Internet - Definitly the hardest one on the list, would be difficult, near impossible if I had to give up during my course. During the summer, I would say I could do it but it would be hard.
    2) Mobile Phone - Yeah
    3) Laptop - Well, I don't have one so.... (Is PC being included in this, or is it just ommitted but assumed to be one of the other lost privilages)
    4) Television - No problem what so ever
    5) Cinema - None issue. Havn't gone in at least 3 months.
    6) MP3 - No problem. Had you said music, now that would be a tricky one.

If I had to give up the PC too, I would find that rough (definitly impossible during college term). I would be pretty sure that I could give up all of them for 30days after an initial craving and would probably be better off if I did.

What else to do is easy, read/educate, train/get fit, play sport, chill, go out with mates, 5-knuckle shuffle, walk around town looking down girls tops when they lean over/put them near a pole, SUDUKO.

If I was guaranteed a good pair of breasts 24/7 then I would be glad to sacrafice myself to this "withdrawl".

    1) Internet - managed it almost for 3 days, ending up using my phone to get some.
    2) Mobile Phone - would be lucky if I lasted 5 minutes without it.
    3) Laptop - could survive without it for a while if I had the internet.
    4) Television - could manage without it as long as I had lots of books.
    5) Cinema - have survived without it for longer than 30 day, not a problem.
    6) MP3 - as long as I had my radio would be fine.

A lot of the technologies can be replaced by other ones, the internet and the mobile phone seems the most addictive though, sad.

Chums, I'm after tidying up the thread a great deal so lets try and help the OP instead of the chit-chat. Thanks. :)

Actually. I'll like that. If I'm seen on boards between 6th november-6th december you can ban from boards until the experiment is over.

(I'd have to get back on and let ye know how I got on after :p)

    1) Internet......Definitely i think that maybe i could but probably not.
    2) Mobile Phone....unless i want to get fired, no
    3) Laptop.......dont have one
    4) Television.....yes
    5) Cinema......yes
    6) MP3.......yes

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,896 ✭✭✭fish-head

Yeah that'd be easy. Mobile could be replaced with landline easy, MP3 replaced with actual live music either from your own or someone else's hand.
Television's ****e anyway. Cinema's mostly useless. Internet could be replaced with books. Laptop replaced with home desktop.. simple!

    4) Nope

    1) Internet =Did it
    2) Mobile Phone = done it quite often
    3) Laptop = dont have one
    4) Television = dont have one
    5) Cinema = most unlikely
    6) MP3 = done it.

Pretty much I could probably do it, the closest was when I was in New York last year, had no mobile, no television, no laptop, no internet for about a month before it got all sorted out and I was lent a friends laptop for internet.

But films (both DVD and Cinema) are really really hard for me, you just have to look at my mod tag to see why.

Starting it tomorrow.. well.. midgnight tonight.

    Schweet!

Anyways, I've created a bebo page with polls and whatnot! It would be good if people go on there and do the polls and let me know.

    You can view it here

There will be a video diary kept during it. Not sure of how to fill it up yet though. Hah.

    LOL

    Video diary:

Day 1 : Here I am, with no modern technology. Oh, except for this video camera.

    Socialising.
    Talking to people.
    Hanging out.
Isn't that what the internet is for?

    Anyway:
    1) Internet......Absolutely no chance whatsoever
    2) Mobile Phone....Easily, I usually check and respond to emails far far more of ten than texts
    3) Laptop.......No chance either /me hugs it
    4) Television.....Yeah, wouldn't be too bad, have games etc. on pc to pass the time instead.
    5) Cinema......Haven't been to the cinema for about 6 months anyway, so yes.
    6) MP3.......No, usually plugged in when on laptop, although with Phantom back it would be easier.

So my question is this, do you think you can last 30 days?
Everything but the mobile yes since I actually need the mobile to arrange lifts etc
