No topic. Sorry. Just thought Leitrim deserves a thread. Any comments, good, bad or indifferent. Just to get the ball rolling, Carrick's coming on really well. :)

ilgato, thanks for remembering we exist. Always the minority on here.

Leitrim is a beautiful county and unspoilt.

    whats a leitrim?:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,023 ✭✭✭il gatto

A Leitrim is a rare breed of Irish person. Due to fact that Leitrim only has a population of just over 25,000, the Leitrim is a highly sought after by persons of the opposite sex. No doubt the scarcity has contributed to the massive, massive desirebility of the Leitrim, but other contributing factors include, looks, charm, wit, sexual prowess and scent. To get your very own Leitrim, Carrick-on-Shannon, Mohill and Drumshanbo are good starting points. But be warned. The Leitrim is notoriously picky about who he/she accepts as a mate. :D

Whew, that was close. I thought you were going to say Stranorlar :D

Seriously, there is an old country estate outside of Ballybofey which was owned by a Lord Leitrim and hence my original post that Leitrim owned part of Donegal

Some day someone will thank me for that useless piece of information

Its a very proud time to be a Leitrim man or woman, the county has never been in better shape. Leitrim is a lovely place, not much happens but it is for that very reason why it is so special. Where I live in Leitrim holds special significance for many people. As John McGahern once said "our heaven was here in Aughawillan" and to be honest he wasnt wrong. Long may it continue.

Dowra deserves a mention, had a few wild nights there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,023 ✭✭✭il gatto

Um. Dowra is in Cavan. Or most of it anyway. Still, close enough:D
Also, did you know that Lord Leitrim's funeral was the only one to be stoned in Dublin City. Many of his beloved Donegal and Leitrim tenants showed up to pay their respects. So to speak.
In reply to stepbar. Leitrim's like a duck. On the surface, there's not much happening, but beneath the surface, it's paddling away furiously. Not my best analogy:)

Mad place , mad , spent the last weekend in carrick , besides the big knife fight on the main street , there was a mad shower of drummers in the oarsman , a helluva lot of cars pulling canoes , a big line of De lorean motor cars , a lot of bewildered americans , and none of this had anything to do with the big red and white mushroom I found in the bog garden in lough key forest park .... no not a thing I tell ya.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,023 ✭✭✭il gatto

Ah. Another quiet Leitrim weekend. You should see it when it gets busy:D

I live in Sligo. Close to town. Both my parents are from Drumshanbo area. I spent every weekend up there til I was in my teens. And most summers spent a few weeks there. We had a farm so we spent most of our free time on it. I still go up nearly every weekend for a few drinks. Usually a quiet pub on a Sunday night with a few friends and relations. I've moved house a few times in Sligo so I sort of think of Drumshanbo as home and I'd like to renovate my fathers old house sometime for weekends. Might even move back full time. Depends on work and the like. Sligo is great, but I feel just at home in Leitrim.

Ah good ould Christy ;) "Ballinamore" is the name of the song and it was written about the infamous kidnapping of Don Tidey many many moons ago

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,023 ✭✭✭il gatto

"No Com-ment" I believe was the general Ballinamore statement of the day to journalists. I remember it well. Fairly well anyway. Ballinamore festival is on this weekend for anyone interested. No real theme, just drinking. Goes a bit wild up there:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 519 ✭✭✭Crave

I'm from drum too, moved to sligo for the summer, more happening!

my god two drumshambo heads here. I could abuse you lot but i wont, us drumkeerinites are better than that :).

Its amazing how many ppl from leitrim, or leitrim connections are popping up here, soon we will be giving the donegal peeps a run for the majority ethnic group.

In relation to christy and ballinamore, it was the ballad of ballinamore, and for the life of me i can not find it anywhere, there is a box set spannig over 30 years or something, but it is not on it.

Il gato, well done on the thread, good participation on this one

    Funny. I heard the opposite:D

Crave. You sure about that. There's shag all in Sligo this summer. An Toastal, Joe Mooney Summer School, Ballinamore Festival, Carrick Water Music thing and there was a big dance music thing around Ballintra last weekend. Depends what you're into, but if I didn't work extremely unsociable hours, I'd spend my time at things like that. Less posing fashionistas:) and more craic. Maybe I'm just getting old. Or developing old man syndrom.

Looks like Leitrim is the only county where 100% of the population uses the internet.

jimmy, alot of positive feedback coming from you here.

Lets see can you say something constructive about leitrim or is just your rapier wit that you are famous for

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,023 ✭✭✭il gatto

Just wandered in from Ballinamore festival. Reccomended it to all, but had no intention of going. Ah well. It was good craic though. Bit rough, but thats par for the course during the festival.
    Forza Leitrim:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,888 ✭✭✭nanook

Il gato, 04:13 in the morning, and you just wandered in.
At that time i would be floating around the place.

    When does the festival end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,023 ✭✭✭il gatto

It's on all week. Next weekend will be mental up there. There's fireworks on Sunday night. Live music on the street most nights. There's a funfair all week as well. If you like that sort of thing:)

Careful now, Muffler might give you a stern ticking off, like he did to me and i didn't even quote as much as that:rolleyes:

    Nanook,
You're from Drumkeeran? I thought you were from Carrick, are you from around the village? Spent lots of time down there.
In relation to christy and ballinamore, it was the ballad of ballinamore, and for the life of me i can not find it anywhere, there is a box set spannig over 30 years or something, but it is not on it.

Actually it is on it, I could send you the MP3 (For research purposes only, must delete straight away) if you want.

Careful now AdrianR, muffler is in bad auld form today.:(

Just to clarify - if you are posting something and it includes the lyrics of a song then all you have to do is say so like the previous poster here has done

OK, that's fair enough, Anyway on that note, here's the entire lyrics of the Ballad of ballinamore, for anyone that's interested, can't remember who wrote it, it wasn't Christy. I was at Christy in Ballyconnell a few weeks ago, requested it at the end but he wouldn't play it:
    The ballad of Ballinamore:

Leitrim is a very funny place sir, A strange and a troubled land
All the boys are in the IRA sir, All the women are in Cumman na mBann
Evert tractor has a (free) Nickey Kelly sticker, Displayed for all to see
Sure it was no wonder that the Gardai made a blunder sez yer man from RTE.

    Chorus
Every bird upon my word is singing I’m a rebel sir up in Leitrim sir.
Every hen indeed is laying hand grenades, I do declare sir, in Drumahair sir.
Every auld crock of a Drumsna cock is longing to be free.
Even sheep are advising they’ll be another rising sez yer man from RTE.

Today tonight they went to Ballinamore sir, they were briefed by the Gardai.
On the video they showed to them the Provies, atin curry and drinking tea.
They were all waring Russian balaclavas, each carried an RPG.
British scalps around the tummy pockets full of stolen money sez yer man from RTE.

    Chorus

Leitrim is seething with sedition, it’s Sinn Fein through and through.
All the task force have joined the local unit, the post office is the GHQ.
They’ve a race track underground for training Shergar, No comment is all they’ll say to me
Subversion here is bubbling up, just take me back to Dublin sez yer man from RTE.

    Chorus

The Ballad of Ballinamore was a b-side. I think the a-side was Hey Ronnie Reagan. Which makes it 1983 or 1984. Reagan visited Ireland in 1984 and Christy was involved in one of the anti-Reagan's visit groups - the Reagan Reception Committee, I think.

Ah Leitrim:D. Been working in Carrick for the past 5/6 months. Tis ok, feck all to do in general but a few nice pubs if yer into yer drinking. Dunne's especially, good live music at least once a week there too;).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,023 ✭✭✭il gatto

Yeah, Dunnes is good. Flynns across the street is nice too. Actually there's loads of nice watering holes in Carrick. With regards to there being feck all to do, wait til the cinema arrives. Then it'll have pretty much everything Sligo does. Pubs, clubs and a cinema:D

Is that the mobile cinema that Paddy20 was on about in a thread a few months ago :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,023 ✭✭✭il gatto

Ah yes, The mobile cinema. A novel idea, and apparently original. Pity everyone finds it so ridiculous. There was a cinema in Carrick and they closed it. They couldn't handle the mighty opposition of a lorry with a big trailor full of seats and a projector :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,888 ✭✭✭nanook

it wasnt the mobile cinema that closed it. they could not even get the rats to stay in it it was that bad.

I remember the cinema when it was a good large place with a balcony, in the end it was a balcony with a hairdressers at the back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,023 ✭✭✭il gatto

They probably wouldn't have closed it at all if they could've got the rats to pay full admission :D

Thats a terrible way to describe Leitrim people :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,888 ✭✭✭nanook

ahhhh muffler, that could be considered as a personal attack.

I will have to deliberate weither you should get a ban for the week, :)

Could you imagine the poll, wither to ban a mod or not

back to the cinema, it was rough, but i have been to worse places, i think it used to be called the giety or somthing like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,555 ✭✭✭✭muffler

I would never abuse any of the 7 people who live in Leitrim :D
