Not the Only Gay in the Gym

I was in the gym this evening. I was in the weights area surrounded by masses of body builders and something struck me. Crunch Fitness happens to be a melting pot for all kinds and creeds. There was a previous post about some gym brimming with Eastern Europeans. Crunch is the same. There is a real international theme to the establishment. I am not sure whether other clientele have noticed but there is a considerable amount of gay men in the gym - as in an awful lot of gay men! I myself also happen to be gay so am probably more likely to notice but I wonder have other Crunch Fitness goers made the same observation...

I know their faces from the George. The Dublin gayscene in Dublin is very small.

    I also bring my Gaydar.

    serious bit of generalizing here;

aren't gay dudes supposed to be more concerned about their appearance and stuff?

Ha, where else would the Dublin scene be?

I think you're jumpin to conclusions. I always see guys lookin at me, and I myself look at other guys, and im straight, its really just a comparison thing, also, its hard not to look at people unless you stare at the floor for yer whole workout.

But if ye recognise em then i spose you're right

What's your problem anyway? U wanna feel more macho by bein the only gay at a gym? :p

    Very true.

I just wonder what draws us to it.

I was it Westwood Clontarf. There was nothing like the concentration of gays in there like there is in this place. I just wondered if anyone else noticed.

Might just be the location - its in town as opposed to being on the outskirts of dublin

Now do not get me started on what Iveagh Fitness is like for the gay scene!!

Finally when i was teaching classes in crunch Dun Laoghaire i always wanted the gay guys in my classes as they were usually the best for generating a good atmosphere.

Don't get me started about that, i'm sick of getting checked out when changing ugh. sometimes it makes me want to be fat then i relaise if i'm getting checked out that much i must be doing something right.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 198 ✭✭Stephanos

No but it can sometimes be a bit unpleasant being checked out while undressing. I am sure most guys assume they are least vulnerable when they are in the confines of their changing room. Poor straight boys!

As Transform said, maybe it's location....or like many other forms of people, maybe gay folks like to try and hook up down the gym, you know, get a date and what not.

    Who knew?

As such, people normally like to hang around similar people, because most people feel comfortable that way. As such, if it's enough to be posted about on boards.ie then i imagine that "XY gym is full of gays" gets said a lot....so gay folks will go there??? Is that just me????

Personally i don't see the point of the thread....it has nothing to do with health and fitness and more to do with the Gay/Bisexual form tbh. :D

Yea i agree with Dragan this is not necessarily fitness.

All the same. What's weird about people being naked in chaning rooms? You can hardly get washed with your clothes on.

I have noticed that in gyms with large group showers it's not much of an issue an issue, people just get on with it - get naked, get washed, get dried, get dressed, who cares, you know? But in gyms with separate showers people seem to not know how to behave. Then you see people making all sorts of mad contortions to get out of their skivvies behind towels.
I'm all for the walking around naked, it doesn't bother me. And i'm not hung like a donkey:o

I do find it weird when the stranger next to you at the urinal decides to talk to you. Let me piss in peace man.

i've never noticed anybody "looking" gay in my gym but maybe i'm not interested in thier sexuality. This has nothing whatsoever to do with Fitness,it just seems somebody wants to draw atention to the fact that he's gay and as such has no relevance on this forum.

Scuse me but I am not drawing attention to anything. It was an observation. Just like a previous one that someone made about their gym being full of Eastern Europeans. I was more interested in whether other people had noticed the same or not.

It has given rise to a few interesting points and made light of a few issues. No harm done!

But still has very little do with health and fitness. :D

Well plenty of less relevant threads pop up and no harm done.

However, no real point having people go through the whole "naked in the showers" debate again.
