i just saw the headline in the Herald , another Fire Brigade attacked in Dublin.
I always wonder about the mentality of people who attack fire brigades, fire fighters , just doing there job, putting out fires. I can see why social misfits attack the Gardai, not condoning this but i can see the twisted logic , of having a go at those policing our society . But why firemen ? it is sick.

I heard one news report where they called it something like 'blue light fever' - I dont get it at all either. I think the courts should treat it as being as serious as an assault on a guard - ie mandatory prison nothing suspended - straight to jail.

I know - I can't understand it for the life of me. What annoys me is that these firemen(women) are also EMTs, so for each one that has to take a day off work because of an attack, it means one less person available to staff an ambulance another night.

This a regular occurance. The recent attack on F/F Jonaton Forbes in which a bottle was thrown at him , resulting in over thirty striches to his face, has highlighted this again.
Its only a matter of time before someone dies because a Fire tender or ambulance is delayed because of these mindless attacks.

Hard to understand, at least you might see think someone attacking the gardai, because they want to "fight the power" but this is stupidity and senseless.

You'd wonder about the way people live thier lives in the general sense to get a kick out of attacking life savers, I guess they are the sort who cut away lifebuoys and kill kittens for fun. People who have no moral compass as no-one taught them to be decent and no-one is going to put them straight.

i already thought they did :o

not a bad idea though. these guys save peoples lives. what if the scum were caught in a house fire themselves

Or even if they need an ambulance - as I said, all full time fire(wo)men in Dublin are also EMTs and will staff an ambulance as regularly as a fire truck.

One of the amendments being brought in with the Criminal Justice Bill at the moment is that an attack on Fire, Ambulance or hospital staff will be treated the same as an assault on a Garda.

"We showed him" to see the injuries to that man is so annoying. I really despair lately for irish society and the path we are going down.

WTF is wrong with these *****? ****ing scumbags is all they are. I showed some reports to my KIWI housemates and they cant believe it they always imagined Ireland to be lovely and tranquil. I had great fun explaining the skanger phenomen!

Sure there is violence here but you dont see people attacking Emergency vehicles. And oddly enough no merauding gangs of youths in a capital city on a saturday night.

Actually, the one thing that spring sto my mind is that this probably is a much more regular threat & occurence to the nurses aand porters in A&E than the fire men and women in the city, but for some reason just doesn't get the same coverage.

the amazing thing about these attacks , is that they usually occur in estates where the attackers themselves live. So you have some neighbours house or local facility , eg youth club , ablaze , the fire brigade come in to help preserve / save property or in some cases local lives ... and the local scum , respond by deciding to attack these ordinary working men and women , with bottles and stones , for only trying to help them . The intelligence.

Although you are probably right, the recent attacks were started by prank calls - so it's not as if the scumbags "saw red" when they saw the fire truck: they purposely called out the fire trucks on a fake call.

Just trying to put accross how serious this problem is. Sorry If they offended you

I removed my post, if that offended you. I think everyone recognises the gravity of the situation though, so normal font sizes should suffice.

i did a few mad things when i was a kid , but never this level of stupid savagery .

    Imagine the scene :-

Johnny -- cider swig --gulp -- "i've a great idea"
Tom -- inhale joint --- "whaa"
Johnny --- "lets call fire brigade and stone it with bottles and hopefully hurt these do-gooders"
Tom -- "great idea" --- more cider & joints ..

Of course these hard men only operate in packs of 20 at least , they're so hard they hate to fight with equal numbers

    999 phone call

    Fire brigade arrives

    Stoning begins

    Crew injured
Great night had by all local scumbags

    in a word sad

Another Firefighter was in court last week to see his attacker found guilty of assault. He was on ambulance duty when attacked. He ended up his a broken Cheekbone and was out of work for a long time. Sentencing is in two weeks

Maybe the sentence should be no emergency services for the scumbag's family for the rest of their lives ?

See if they're laughing when some other pikey has set their house on fire and they want help.

i remember watching a program about the Scottish FB. They were called out, drove into a cull de sac and then were attacked with rocks and wood planks etc etc. Its sick, i cant get my head around why they do that to the FB. Im with the Aux fire service and last halloween we were very cautious about getting rocked when driving by bombfires etc in the fire engine

    Awful stuff.

Any way we can legally swap our thousands of human parasites for a similar number of enterprising and law-abiding workers from China or India? Course if our 'disenfranchised youth' had to live in a society that did not include regular handouts of tax-payer money, they wouldn't survive very long, now would they?

Maybe we should spend more money on 'those society have left behind' to ensure these awful scenes (oh the humanity) are never revisited and all skangers become productive members of society, giving up their gold rings, chains, bracelets, knives, baseball caps and propensity for violence?

I know its not in the same league but i'm heartily sick of scumbags pelting busses with rocks too.In certain areas where i'm from, buses will not service certain roads because gangs of pups have been breaking windows by throwing rocks. Now,wheras it pisses me off mightily to have to walk to another bus stop it must be very much worse for the large number of elderly people in the are who are dependant on public transport.Anyway, what are these little scrotes achieving? They're not being gangsters or "fighting the power",they're pissing off ordinary, working class people.Vigilante-style beatings aren't far off methinks..

I think they are trying to appear tough in front of their equally simpleton friends, that and looking for somone to pay them some attention. Its like watching an ape programme on discovery also reminds me of that scene from 2001 a space oddyssey where the apes are egging each other on and being brave in a big group. I hope the new legislation comes soon and they set a few examples - put cameras on the fire trucks and have the cops ready to back them up for future calls. I dont know why the cops dont go to the fire calls in any event to be honest - perhaps they should start attending those wherever they can or wherever they might expect hassle.

It's hard enough to get them to turn up to what they are supposed to deal with, car crashes, etc but if there's a chance of a Scott medal they come out of the woodwork...

In other words they prioritise the life-threatening calls before the routine fender benders and unimportant ****?

I'm not going to get into a slagging match with you as I do respect what you do. But to expect you guys to turn up at every fire or ambulance call is a bit much.

my friend is a fireman. he got a slap two months ago from a junkie. the gardaí seen it and asked did he want to press charges. my friend asked would it be worth it and the garda said "well it will take a few months to process, you'll have to go to court, maybe more then once and sit in the dock in front of the junkie and his family and the most he'll get is a suspended sentence, if even that"

    needless to say, he declined.

He should've found out where the junkie hung out and gone back some dark night and gave him a good flogging.

well if thats the case then attacks by emergency services on people should get increased sentences etc, or infact real trials

I think the news about this attack is great.

Obviously the attack itself is unjustified and totally wrong - but it is one more stick to beat skangers with. Another reason to complain about them.

    Agree with you Degsy

Are these the same disadvantaged youths that have been ignored by society and constantly crip about lack of facilities in their area?
Any facilites provided such as bus shelters and phone kiosks are then promptly trashed.
I can't get my head around it

Last time I had the misfortune of getting off at Broombridge, the local scangers were on the canal bridge dropping stones on a Intercity train passing below.
Were this station to close, I'm sure there'd be outrage in the community losing their dart station

They're at it again - apparently a fire crew went out to put out a fire at a halting site in Dunsink , got surrounded and stoned .Fire crew are all out on sick leave now, and engine is a right off ... is it just me but is Dublin becoming a horrible city to grow up in or live in ?

Well sometimes fires can be good things...... No need to stop them all...!

But yeh, that's f*ckin ridiculous. I don't even wanna imagine the mentality of these disgusting pr*cks. We really need to radically change the Gardaí and the Justice system.

I want LOADS more Gardaí patrolling the streets in groups of 10 or 20; I wanna see them beating the sh*t out of scumbags like these, using sticks of bamboo, or 2x4s with rusty nails sticking out of them; and then I wanna see their bloodied and bruised bodies thrown into a jail-cell for the next 5 years at least.

Unfortunately, the only new thing about this is that attacks like this are being reported - it has always been a problem for the fire brigade, but it never got the publicity before.

FYI: If you see any anti-social behaviour around a train station or on a train you can report it to the Irish Rail emergency number: 1800-344-544.
For Broombridge please phone Cabra Garda station: 666-7400.

A friend of mine made the phone call, the "residents" of the halting site are burning insulated wires to get the copper out. They wait till they've a pile of them and then set em on fire. The smoke travels for miles and the fires frequently get out of hand.My friend's house is so near the fire she was worried it would set her place on fire too. They should seriously send the army along with the fire brigade and bust a few heads open. Its the only thing they'll understand.

    Here here!

As so many others have said, I can kinda see a twisted logic behind fighting gaurds, although it's not like I would, but Fire fighters!? It's just rediculous.. I think something like a gaurd riding with the firefighters wouldn't be a bad idea.. Or maybe giving the firefighters a set of cuffs, incase something happens.

I think giving them a plank with a rusty nail it's fairer, but it wouldn't get passed.. Although, would they not use the water to blast them back? It's powerful enough, if jackass is anything to go by..
