Credit given where credit due dude!

I've heard some big guys say you're big!
What would be your natural size and weight if you were not training?

That would be "Mr 3rd in The World" i take it??? That fecker!!!! :D

Naturally I am prone to being fat more than anything, which sucks!!! I'm pretty tall too, about 6'3" so filling that out is pretty tough as well!!!

To give you an idea though, I stepped back into the gym a year and a half ago after about a year and a half out due to an injury. I stepped in at 14.5 stone, right now I'm 18 on the button. I reckon I could lose another 14 pounds and be nice and lean - that may be a pipe dream though and I could lose 14 pounds and still look fat as f*ck!!! All in all, I would hope to be lean at about 16.5 to 17 stone, and over the next year or so build up to being lean at 18stone or so.

I'm blessed with naturally wide clavicles, but cursed with a naturally wide waist, although my taper has been heading in the right direction as of late, and will continue to do so during part 2 of my main cut for July/August

All in all though, I find it hard to think of myself as being big in any sense of the word, especially knowing guys like Eammon who is just a legend in fairness to him!

Maybe in another 12 to 24 months I will think of myself as being big - I hope!!!

Back to the original question….Nick is in good shape…he seems to have certain genetic advantages such as good insertions and gentically full muscle bellies but no doubt he puts in the effort as well.

As such, it would be hard to repliacte his look, because everyone is different, the best you can be is the best you can be. I would suggest you take Nick as inspiration , because that is a good thing, but think only about developing YOUR body, not developing your body to be like his!!!

It will take dedication to diet, to the gym and to cardio….it should be noted that Nick seems to be quite the sportsman and plays a lot of basketball, football etc. He's basically an active guy with good genetics, and he works hard in the gym and he pays attention to his diet.

( I know all this because my ex used to have a certain adiciton to E! channel on digital and they actually did one good show where the followed some stars around the gym, Nick seemed to be the only one who genuinely enjoyed what he was doing )

If you do the same, ask any question you have that need answering and stick with it for a while then you will see some good results as well.

If the OP doesn't mind - I have Dragans attention so Im going to work with the advantage!
In also touching 6ft 3, I was loosing the weight about 2 months ago to make a specific weight catagory in the Taekwon-Do I do. I got down to 83kgs, which is the lightest I've been in a long long time! At this point, even my mother said I looked very Ill so I said feck that and got back into a routine. Over the last 7 weeks I've put back on the weight and Im now 95kgs, strength has gone up and Im lifting decent weight - I train on my own so decent weight is what I can lift to failure without a spotter.

I'll be seeing Eamonn today to get further advice, but what do you think, I'll probably plateau in the 2 weeks or so, whats you secret to maintaining size while giving the body a break, im starting to feel the effect of training very hard - general soreness and fatigue etc.. its not too bad but im noticing it.

    BTW why aren't you competing?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,497 ✭✭✭✭Dragan

To answer the competing question first, i simply don't have the structure for it. I'm not sure if i ever will but i can spot things that would keep me out of the top places now, and i'm not even lean yet. I just don't think i have the genetic structure to compete....well, not unless i get to a ridiculous level of mass that makes up for what i would lack in other area's! I'm just not big enough and detailed enough and complete enough yet.

As for the first question about keeping size while you take a break. I assume at most you would take maybe 7 days off....which in terms of keeping your size is a very short time frame. I would find it unlikely that you would lose any significant weight over this time....as you will not be working out you can lower your carbs a bit and maybe up your protein for the week.

It will sound weird, but you might FEEL like your shrinking but thats just the mind playing tricks on you.

One thing i will say for a tall guy is that it's all about shoulders....more than anything you need wide shoulders to look like big when you are tall, otherwise you just kind of add up in peoples head as being "Normal" for a "big" guy, which is a pain in the ass.

Lets all be honest here and admit that we want people to look at us and go "Damn, he lifts weight!"!! :D

All in all, i imagine that this is nothing that Eammon has not said already to you, but when your in the gym lift heavy, with intensity. Get your food in and get your sleep. Be honest with yourself and take extra rest when you need it ( and ONLY when you need it, hence the be honest part!!! ) if your not growing and the effort in the gym is there then up your food a bit and work away some more. Basic lifts are best and patience is all important!!!

Oh yeah, and tell Eammon i said "hey!"

Agreed - well, I don't think I'd actually consider hitting her, but I might lock her outside. :D

Edit: I have no idea how often Nick Lachey works out, but I'm guessing at some point he trained fairly seriously (high school sport maybe) and now maintains a decent diet, and works out occassionally and fairly casually.

I believe it was Varsity Football , where he would have been worked like a dog in the weight room from a young age....reputed to have been promising until a torn ACL fu8ked his game up.

Or so i have been told. :D

He lost 68 pounds for his role in the machinist and it made him the actor to lose the most amount of weight for a role in the history of film. But yeah jesus the amount of weight he put back on is impressive after doing the role in the machinist.

Yeah Bale in Batman looks like a BBer 10 to 12 weeks pre-contest. Kind of look that's the nicest in my opinion.

Don't like seeing striations or paper thin skin.

http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showpost.php?p=2450726&postcount=2 - don't particularly agree with all of the percentages in the above post's examples but imo "hard" is the nicest state.

I'm in the same boat as you, i dont have a training partner so i cant do some stuff extremely heavy like the bench. but to be fair iv did well for my own, going from a 40kg bench from september last year to a 5X5 80kg bench current.

Jon what i can say is, ya said ya might be comming to a plateu soon, id take a break for 2 weeks when that time comes. Last week and the week before that,i didnt do any training as i thought i wasnt getting the pain anymore and felt i wasnt growing even when i was eating a ton and resting loads and lifting right, so i took a break.

I agree what dragan said earlier that when you take breaks your mind tricks you into thinking you're shrinking or getting smaller, nope for my two weeks off i stayed the same size and didnt lose any weight, i just ate what i usually ate and after comming back into the gym since Monday my body is feeling the good pain all over again and i can already feel the difference already since Monday :) .

I'd never heard of Nick Lachey till this thread. But I used google images to see what the fuss was about. TBH the guy is nothing special in terms of his build. Average enough, some would say skinny with fairly low bodyfat. If the guy is average height I'd say he's around 11 stone and about 12% bodyfat In the pics I saw he didn't have much of a V-taper either. He might be one of those guys who works out his biceps and chest and not much else. Is he a boyband poser? He looks like one :)

It is quite annoying when silly women swoon over guys like that and come out with stuff like "OMG he's like soooo muscley and toned!!!!" Just because he's a celebrity that takes off his top doesn't make it true :)

Also remember tha if this guy is posing with his top off in photos and films it'll be all setup to make him look his best. Pose, tan (maybe fake) good lighting and angles etc.

I'd say he may even have been less than 165 lbs for that role. Also I'm not even sure if his bodyfat was THAT low. OK it was low but the lighting in the basements in Fight Club was perfect for accentuating the low bodyfat.

    don't mind the BMI bull.
the only way to go is by body fat%
    i am also 6'1 and 12 stone. my bf% July 2004 was 13.5 %
had it checked recently (march) it's now 6.7%. this was done with a seven point skin fold caliper test. the thing now is to gain some muscle while keepinf bf as low as possible. ideal physique would be brad pitt circa fight club/snatch. 90% there now, just need an upper chest!

Fair enough, but I wish everyone would stop making out like that kind of goal is that difficult. I went from being an obese mofo to having a body not unlike Brad Pitt's in fight club in about 5/6 months. It's putting on decent muscle mass that's difficult, and I think people who've put the work in to gain some mass feel a little hard done-by when people's general opinions of who looks like they work out or not is solely judged on bodyfat levels. I'm sure anyone who's noticed me in my gym might even think I've gone backwards in my progress over the last six months - doesn't matter that I've put on 30lbs, only that my bodyfat is a little higher.

The Brad Pitt physique really only requires that you are
    1] not completely sedentary
2] have low bodyfat (which is pretty easily achieved with the right diet & by not being completely sedentary)

You probably saw him in his very early boyband days. No way is he 11 stone nowdays.
Think people like his current 'look' because he has the figure of a sports player rather than a lifter/fitness fanatic. It seems more natural and attainable because he doesn't have a really low bf%

F*ck Jessica Simpson dude.....i feel bad for poor Nick.

Did you know, when he originally asked her to marry him, she said no, that she wanted a break to "make sure she loved him" , so she went off and was with some other dudes, went out with one guy who treated her like ****.

Nick like sap didn't go near another women, then she came back and said yeah, she'd marry. I'd slap her in her silly blond face!!!!

    nick who???
just saw his wikipedia and he's just a normal bloke...

he'd get murdered in a proper gym.
too pretty for calluses in his own head i bet.

once you get into the weights game you realise fairly fast how small certain ppl are. Case in point is the Brad pitt fight club thing. when i saw that first i was so in awe. then about xmas time i saw it and i laughed my ass off. so so tiny and puny. shoulders/traps - nothing?

As for getting massive - well thats not much good if you cant run. For me a sprinters physique is the only way forward. Dwain Chambers, Ben Johnson, Mo anyday? Ben did 2sets of 6 squats @ 600lbs at 180lbs!!! And that was well off a 1rm for him

speaking of spinters, another motivation would be Michael Johnson. The man's an absolute legend, completely dominating his events for nigh on a decade. just looking at his physique at the atlanta and sydney olympics was awe inspiring. not that HUUUUGE either, just 180 lbs @ 6 foot 1, but super strong and super fast. one of the all time great athletes. the man is still in great shape these days.

Every morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up and knows that it will have to outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed.

And, every morning in Africa a lion wakes up and knows that it will have to outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.

it doesn't matter if you are the lion or the gazelle. When that sun comes up, you had better be running.
