I'm moving from the UK to Galway in about 4 months

What's the best gym in Galway?

I don't care about swimming pools, saunas etc just Freeweights benches Dipping/pullup station, cable row, Lat pull down Machine type thing

Oh and maybe a few Crosstrainers

I don't necessarily need a Hardcore Bodybuilders/Powerlifters gym, but not an all out pink dumbells to 10Kg type gym either

    There is a few gyms
Galway City Gym (Tuam Road) Was a member
    Kingfisher (Dublin Road) Member
Crunch (Near City Centre) Was a member
    NRG (Bohermore)
    GMIT (Dublin Road)Was a member
Peak Phasike (Headford Road, Near enough to city Centre)

I think the best is the Kingfisher lots of machines , kept clean not to packed, good few weight machines, all round I think its the best in galway pool, sauna , steam room etc.I think full member ship is over 600 but I am a student and i got it for 390, you could chance you arm and say your a student as they didnt ask for any proof;)

Galway City Gym is pretty good alot of big guys in there lifting big weights but no pool or anytihng just Sauna, I think this is second best as its not that packed and no hassle , not sure bout cost tho def cheaper than Kingfisher, Prob the gym for you.

Crunch. Its ok its cheap something like 220 for the year, but its pretty packed all the NUI students go here, I think they have good machines just hard to get on one! They have a steam room but its broken and its been broken for the last year so doubt it will be fixed any time soon. Some nice eye candy in there aswell !Two big screens showing Kiss and some other extreme sports channel, they show matchs as well so could be good for the world cup.

GMIT gym is pretty crap has a few machines and few weights nothing really to talk about could have a better gym at home tbh.

I was not in the other gyms maybe some one else can fill you in.

I was a member of Crunch, NUIG gym, staff are **** and it's terrible, absolutely pooh. If you're serious about lifting don't even bother. But if you wanna stare at girls on the treadmills and use a crappy smith machine for squats and benches then by all means feel free to join.
I'm a member of Galway City Gym and it's a great gym, sorta oldskool but has everything you need. Doesn't get TOO busy like Crunch and you have two squat racks and olympic benches. I got student membership for 6 months for 230 euros. I would have paid 400 to be honest, I love this gym that much. I get motivated when there because some guys are benching, squatting serious weights. I've seen guys bench 400+ lbs no bother.
I went to Peak Physique and didn't see a squat rack so left immediately. Don't even bother.
I haven't seen the Kingfisher but I hear it's good. Give it a look. We have enough English in Galway though so change your accent when you come, thanks.

    Galway City Gym:
Tiny! Omg i can't believe this is a "gym" open to public membership.
I walked in, saw like maybe 3 treadmills. They have some nice free weights but it's really cramped in there with huge hulking guys hogging all the weights. (my first impression, i've never been a member)

    KingFischer:
Nice. A decent number of treadmills and some stepmachines downstairs. Upstairs is a nice selection of new machine weights that i give the thumbs up.
Just 2 benches for freeweights however, infact i don't remember if they even have a rack where you can bench or squat..I've no interest in the pool which seemingly attracts most their members. It's also rather expensive. Seems to get over-busy after the usual work hours. It's got it's own car park but offers basically zero bicycle parking facilities (there is a handrail used for such but it's actually for the wheelchair access ramp and i find it rude to chain up a bike there)

    Crunch:
    I'm a member there today.
It's probably the cheapest but the best bang for the buck.
It's got loads of treadmills, crosstrainers, stepmachines, row machines, bicycle machines. A nice selection of machine weights but lacking in the freeweights. While there are plenty of dumbells there are 3 benches and only one rack to bench-press/squat and there's always somebody on it. Prepare to queue if thats what your going for. Nice projection tele's tho and loads of young student types (this is a plus or a minus). Gets over-busy during the school year and after work rush.

    Haven't checked out other gyms.

I was a memebr at Peak Physique for a year. It was pretty good. No swimming pool, dont think there was a sauna either but might be mistaken on that one. Staff were very helpful though. Could get busy at around 6pm but youd never be waiting awfully long for a treadmill. I'd recommend it anyways.

Sounds like City gyms the one to check out then, I've seen pics of the Kingfisher club and it looks far too posh for my liking!

I'll do my best to change my accent for you too:p

Forget the Gym, they serve a lovely pint of Guinness in Taffees

The gym situation in Galway is dreadful. I'm there two years and still no solutions.

    Heres my opinion.

    Crunch fitness (previous member)
Horrible gym. Over-subscribed. Worn out equipment. Fook all free weights. Horrible 'marketing' type staff who are just interested in signing new members up. Its a disgrace that they charge students for this place.

    Kingfisher (current member)
Just about ok. For a premium gym it falls far short. Its missing lots of weights (pec deck?, calf raise? squat rack? ez curl bar?nope. or how about just more than one 10kg dumbell) Again its all about the new members at the expense of actually running a competent gym. The cardio section is good though I will give it that.

    City gym (thought about it)
It really is tiny and quite expensive for the size. Has everything I would need but it looks like it could get a bit too busy given its size.

    Peak Physique
Its not really a proper gym but it is one of the cheapest. i would go here over Crunch Fitness as it is very quiet in here so no waiting.

I'm actively looking for a new gym but I dont think its going to get any better for me than whats out there.

There is the new NRG opened up on the headford road, Whats that like?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 370 ✭✭base2

My girlfriend went in their. The usual galway crap,

All about the sales and marketing and not about the gym. She said she was been hassled by some sleazy types to sign up there and then and to go out on their social nights. The gym had few weights and just cardio stuff and a swimming pool.

I like GCG - but tbh its the only gym i have been in in Galway. Problem is that when there is a few people in there it seems quite packed. But if you avoid it at peak times its spot on. Nice people in there too.

I am a member of NRG in Botharmore. It is a new gym with good facilities. Swimming pool, sauna, steam room, etc. Weights room with machines and freeweights, cardio room with treadmills, bicycles, crosstrainers. Cardio equipment all comes with tv's. Music played also. Not too busy and has parking in underground parking lot where entrance is located. Appx 600 per year.

New gym in Galway just opened in January - Olympic Physique...

Big enough, airy space. Loads of new top end equipment - fixed & free weights, treadmills, striders & bikes. No pool, sauna just installed...

Best thing is that it's not too busy - still in the stage of building membership... Other places I've been member of (Galway City and Kingfisher) just get way too busy...

Membership rates is on a par with most other places...

Hi if you're still looking 4 the olympic physique gym it's unit 20, on the Ballybane Industrial Estate, off the Tuam Road up past DHL (opposite Monaghans Garage) and then take 2nd left (by electrical shop called Peter Currans)

    Hey,

I have a query for all you knowledgeable gym people. On the Kingfisher site, it says there is 250 euro off annual membership during January, I rang up and they yeah with the 250 off it is 520, which means it was 770 prior to January, which seems like an awful lot, can anyone confirm?

That's crap. I joined in October. The charge was €525. There was a joining fee of €50 but they waived that with a bit of persuasion.

lol. just called the king fisher and they put me through to the sales dude.
All i called up to find out was how much their membership was. He pretty much refused to tell me how much it costs.

He just kept saying ill tell you all about it when you come down have a look around etc etc.

that's the general idea, get you into the gym; damn salesmen and high-pressure tactics! OlympicPhysique just put up a new website, (olympicphysique.ie), it has most of the info on it. no rates though, "drop in and ask us about membership"

AFAIK membership usually averages out to about €40 per month. great gym though, the staff are friendly enough, chatty without being too in-your-face!!

they've got a discount for friends/couples joining together, i think it works out to a tenner off each month.

same situation with the joining fee (as HardyEustace mentioned) if you twist them on the fee you might get results!

i was pretty impressed with NRG in Bohermore, v clean and well kept. shame about the knobby staff though, instead of letting me work out it was all about "showing me around, discussing membership"

    *rant over*

Olympic physique are expensive. Same as the kingfisher or NRG but they have no pool.

How many olympic athletes train in the other gyms other than galway city gym ? how many other competitive athletes train there and nowhere else?.
Paul hession trains there hes off to Beijing , emily maher when she was a youth international going to the youth olympics trained there not to mention the core of the irish olympic weightlifting squad ie darcy , conroy , stewart and there are some serious powerlifters there as well dave foster drug free and doing a 190 bench .Johnny o connor and the connacht squad go up as well, look you may believe that other gyms are better , but if they were better why are the best training there , I kinda think that its funny that olympic physique have that name and yet our olympic sprinters , international lifters and jumpers train in city

what if we're not olympicans in the making, and just want to lose weight and maybe get a personal trainer to work with in the beginning? i'm not too sure where to go lol!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Kingfisher is good. I always hear people talking crap like 'You're not a weightlifter if you don't go to Galway City Gym...' or 'you're obviously not into weights if you go to the Kingfisher...' yeah GCG is a great gym but you really have everything fundamental you need in the Kingfisher....squat rack, 2xbenches, smith machine, dumbbells up to 32kg, a lot of various machines, the weights stations, etc...I have a friend who goes to GCG and IS a serious lifter, and was very impressed when he came with me to the Kingfisher last bank holiday when GCG was closed...

also - Kingfisher has a good cardio section.

are weights that important for a girl that just wants to lose alittle weight, get more energy and tone up? i know i'd need to do some weights but would weights be the most important aspect?

I would have presumed Emily did most of her training when she was 16/17 in Scanlon Park, Kilkenny as that was where she was from? I would have also presumed she did little gym work at that age based on her coach's (at the time) approach to training?

On Hesh (he trains in Scotland these days btw) I wouldn't say he has the traditional "olympic physique", butty legged, butty range of movements, butty all over yet very, very fast (the man is defying science) and a legend:D

I'm all for being a fan of your gym, but don't make it out to be something that is untouchable in the lifters it produces. You talk about the "core" of the Irish weightlifitng squad being there, well for a start isn't Peter Stewart training and living over in the US? That immediately has your "core" down to two. I'm not sure who the top lifter in the country is at the moment, it's either Kevin (one of the nicest and most helpful guys I've met incidently) or Cathal. I think it might be Kevin so I can see why you're big upping your gym since he's there but there's no need to go over the top.

There's no real "core" Irish weightlifting gym. The top lifters are coming from all around the country. If I HAD to give iit a current home, I'd probably say UL.

I was thinking of joining that one. Very central. I was contacted by the a guy from Radisson about theirs but i'm not sure about it. 80 a month x 12 = €960.

That as opposed to NRG, which I actually have been in and like the look of. It was 18 months ago since I was in it but still, it can't have changed much.

The membership includes the pool ya? And personal plans and all that lark?

Anyone had any experiences with the new one in Leisureland? Also can non students join the university gym?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 189 ✭✭dv6

i am a member of the one is Leisureland, its quite small and cramped and gets very busy so can be queuing so can be a pain, it is cheap enough though and has 3/6 month deals which is the main reason i joined as not sure ill be in Galway for another year. Full access to pool aswell, but as this is open to the public can also get fairly busy.

Hi Valentina, there is a school of dance in the Terryland Retail park beside the Marriot Hotel as well as various types of dance classes (ie Hip Hop, Tango) in NUIG (but would have stopped now for the summer) and I think there are loads of Salsa classes in various venues in the city.

    Crunch Fitness is now closed.
    Thank you.

Sorry only seen this now and thought Joannes Doyles class in Crunch was very good but thats now closed now unfortunatley. We have Sarah teach Spinning classes from Sept now (not during the summer) and suppose you would consider me biased but her class is very good.
Anyone know when the new NUI Galway gym is opened

Not sure if its actually open yet but a friend was given a tour of the new building so I would suggest calling in and having a look at the least.

What gym would you suggest for someone who's living east of the city centre? (Near Parkmore Business Park)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 189 ✭✭dv6

In regards what gym to join east of the city, it depends what you are looking for really. Kingfisher is well set up for cardio and has a pool but a poor weights section. If interested in weights try Galway city gym on the tuam rd. Quality hotel in Oranmore might suit also if near Parkmore, though ive never been out there so cant comment. Olympic gym opened in ballybane ind est too lately. No pool but meant to be very well equiped otherwise, quite pricey too though i think.

so does radisson and kingfisher renmore. Rad opened at 6.30 7days a week, other gyms shorter hours on weekends

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 96 ✭✭Websters

Just back from doin biceps and forearms at Kingfisher in renmore.Bag of ****e that place.Well the weights section is anyway. It's insanely over priced and the staff paste on the most absurdly fake smiles I've ever witnessed(and ive been to the states :P) There's **** all plates up there(only one set of 5's) no bar for hammer curls,no fixed preacher curlbench(although the free weight one is better I still warm up on a fixed one) And the section with the benches is stuffed right in the corner like a ****ing nursery. And at 500bucks with the 200 off (700 standard??) I'd expect a thai massage thrown into ever visit. Not my bag and wont be going again, I should have listenedto my mates and went to galway city gym right off.

Best set up I've used or seen in Galway is in the new place down in the Lisbaun industrial estate, Results. Wasn't looking for personal training but mate recommended I give it a try while I was down there as he knew the guy who set the place up, guy called Dave Gallagher. Was just before pre season (rugby) and still had a couple of old injuries (knee and ankle) giving me trouble so he wouldnt let me smash the weights as I planned and instead used my body weight for stabalising work first and a few other bits and pieces. Then next couple of sessions built us up to hit weights and all like a wanted but with loads of exercises I'd never used before (and then the insuing pain of little muscles I never knew I had) Got to say he kept it very varied and interesting, and in much better shape now and no gip from any of the old injuries (first time in years) so couldn't ask for more. Definitely recommend it, if only I could get of the smokes now I'd be flying :)
