Lyons Tea, milk (after a visit to Ireland it takes a month or two before I can bear finnish milk again), Guinness (good guinness, at a reasonable price), friends, family and the craic/humour of Irish people (I cant find any Irish in my current city), Irish accents, mountains & sea (I come from Tralee), the fact that in Ireland I know what shop to go to if I need something (here the lines are a little blurred on what a shop sells)

dont miss scumbags, skangers, chavs etc

    Well lets see...

I have to say that the food over here in NZ is pretty good. There are great sausages, hams, lamb and beef. So cant say I miss that about home. just as good here. I have got used to drinking Dilmah (sp) tea. Not Lyons but better than the rest.

However I cannot drink the Guinness over here. Its just not on the same planet as back home. We went back to Ireland in September on a long honeymoon till January. I felt like a friggen child on my first night back in Ireland and just the anticipation of that black pint. :D

Mabey strange or mabey not but I really miss and I mean really miss Kevin Myers Irishmans diary in the Irish Times. A complete **** stirrer and there is nothing like it over here.

I do miss family and friends now and again. Myself and my brothers and mates lived in a big house in Terenure for years before I left for NZ in 2004 and we lived in each others pockets. Then a Kiwi chick pulled me to the otherside of the world:rolleyes: .

And while it took a while, I have gotten used to the earthquakes.:)

    All good though.

    Rgds,

    Niall

I have been living in the states for 2 months now. I must say i miss alot about ireland. The food, pubs, the people. It doesnt hit you how great a country ireland is until you are away.

Our local stop and shop have an irish section which helps when i need an irish fix. In saying that shaws have the irish section marked under the eastern european sign. We have a friend who works there and i complained to him.He said the manager is a right nob and hasnt a clue where ireland is lol so why should he care.

I have been living in Pensacola Florida now for 4 years and there is so much I miss from back home in Dublin.

    All is order starting with

Family and friends. The mammys cooking, going for a pint with me father and brother, hanging out with my little sister.

The Craic in the pub while getting slaughtered on Guinness. Creamy Guinness. God I miss it so bad. I can get in over here, but its no where near the same.

I miss Irish people in general. There are not many where I live at in N.W Florida. When I do meet an fellow Irish man, it makes my day, just chatting way as if you were at home.

The sence of humor of Irish People. No other race can laugh and have the craic like we can.

Going to the chipper on my way out of the pub. Getting myself a greasy battered sausage and chips, smothered in salt and viniger. Jayis, my mouth is watering right now.

King Crisp sandwhichs with a cup of tea using dairygold butter.

    What I don’t miss :-

Paying through my arse for everything I need. From housing to a pint to a pack of smokes. It’s a total disgrace how expensive it is back in Dublin.

The weather. Living in Florida, as you can imagine the weather is beautiful all year round. I don’t think I could stick the Irish weather again.

Overall, there is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about home. Family or friends.

Are you going for long Larianne? I live 2-3 hours south of Chicago. I get most of my stuff in a place called World Harvest. Meijer, the supermarket, had an international aisle with all different stuff but I boycotted them when they moved all the Irish food under the British flag (took down the Irish one from he ceiling, or it fell down). I was just talking last night about how I needed a can of club orange or lemon, must take a trip shortly. I get my folks to send me crisps and tea, cant beat that :D

Not actually going to Chicago this time. Doing the year thing, going to S.E. Asia and Oz, NZ and LA and San Fran. So I think I might bring a small stash of Lyons, just for emergencies! :)

Damn right about Club Orange. All my ex-pat friend and family outside Ireland allways get me to bring over suitcases of the stuff.

Diet Club Orange is surprisingly nice.

The last few days have into the 90s here (IL) and horrible humidity. I want Irish summers back :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 976 ✭✭✭Gandhi

Suck it up, Ruu. Stay hydrated and you'll be fine.

Next time you get off the plane in Shannon, and have to duck your head because the clouds are so low, and everyone is talking about what a lovely day it is, you'll be longing for the sunshine.

And friendly pubs, red lemonade and my aunts farm, and Lake Furnace by my old house in Newport, Co. Mayo.

Things I miss? *sobs* How 'bout everything? The people, the pubs, the small, curvy, windey roads, galestorms, RAIN!!, brown sauce, chips and curry, nice tasting water, hills, the gray skies, GREEN!!, my husband's family, did I mention pubs?, REAL CHOCOLATE!!, real spuds that don't taste like rubber, Christmas dinner, being able to walk everywhere, taxis!, not having to appoint a designated driver, how everyone in your town knows who you are, and pubs. Oh I already mentioned pubs, didn't I. :p

In fact, the only thing I'll miss about here when we move back there is my mom. :(

I too miss being able to walk around with everyone knowing who I am, greeted by people with my first name :) I came from a town of around 1,000 people (probably double that now) but I live in a town over 150,000 :(

Florida is so overrated, it's not even funny. I miss Ireland so bad that I cry to my husband about going back pretty much every day. He's completely fed-up with my whingin, but I just can't seem to stop missing it over there. Florida, or America for that matter, is just a completely different planet. I'll even go as far as to say that I hate living here. Nice place to visit and all that jazz...:p

Ha! I knew it was you!! I'm jelti from VJ!!! :D What a small (cyber) world.

I've been in Florida since I was eight years old, and in the states since birth. ;) I'm The Yank (well, according to Aidan and his family, anyway). :p Lived in Scotland for a year though, and then Ireland for almost a year. Now I can't seem to adapt to living here in the states again. :(

P.S. Aidan still doesn't have his EAD yet either, but we did have his biometrics appt. last Wednesday. He's bored out of his mind, but we just got a medium-sized above ground pool so he's content for now. :p
