Breton, proficient in Security, Sneak, Blade, Light Armour, Speechcraft, Destruction and Restoration.

So I like to sneak around a lot and then fire fireballs at any enemy I spot.

Started playing last night! Im a Breton, male. Im a Spellsword and picked the Mage sign. I actually like it.. started off with a flare spell and i could run around killing rats and goblins with this without even using my weapons i picked up along the way.

What surprised me more was the fact that my machine... so far which is only an Athlon 2100+xp running windows 2k, 1gb of ram and Geforce 6600 256mb(nonGT) runs the game at an acceptable level. It autodetects at medium and sticks me on 640x480 but putting it at 800x600 is the same speed and even 1024x768 seems perfectly fine too. Even with a most of the detail on. If i stick everything up hight it will probably start smoking :D But im happy with it.

Great game though getting people to like you is VERY different to morrowind.. have not got the hang of it yet.

I just started last night. Argonian, Thief, Knight.

I have PM1.8GHz & ATI X300 card and it autodetects 640x480 for me as well. I tried 800x480 and it worked ok. Didn't had the guts to try a bigger res but if u say 1024x works ok for u I will try my luck :)

Did any of you guys went underwater yet? The details there are barely visible and I wonder if thats the why it is or it happens because the graphics are set to minimum to work on my machine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

yes went underwater as soon as i got out of the prison. There is some ruin on the other side of the river so i swam across and some fish attacked me... magic does not work in water :D So got out a sword. Anyway water is murky but i could see the bottom.. Since the game is trying to be real then the water should be murky. Not crystal clear.

I believe this is a limitation on all GPUs and settings, but there are some mods out already which increase the visibility underwater (I haven't tried them myself).

Dark Elf, born under the Thief sign. Custom class, specialised in combat. (strength + Agility) Major skills - blade, marksman, security, sneak, destruction, restoration, light armour. Lot of fun, I partiucularly enjoy sneaking around and shooting people in the back of the head :)

Hey Zillah or anyone, where the hell do i get an invisability spell, its says Bravil is the mages guild of illusion but they wont sell that spell to me, do I have to do some guild mages missions before i can get it or do i have to go to the arcane university.

Please help my illusion hasn't gone up once and its a major skill

Here are a couple concerning the water draw distance:

    http://www.tessource.net/files/file.php?id=1830
    http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=16993&d=1143358758

I think you load the esp files from the "Game Files" section in the Oblivion launcher window, but I haven't really looked at mods or modding at all yet so I could be wrong. Remember that mods can conflict both the orginal games files and with other mod files thus potentially screwing up your game.

Gah, I thought I was being original with my ninja, though I went for destruction and mysticism instead of athletics and acrobatics.

They're picked as they're really easy to level up as you do them all the time as if they're your major then you'll easily level up.

Also handy for us wannabe theif/assaisins making our quick getaways!

I'm a wood elf (whos a vampire/thief/assassin... your general bad-guy) and an expert in sneak and marksman :)

You sir have no bloody idea what you're talking about. Acrobatics dictates your jumping distance (you should see my character leap onto roof tops) while athletics dictates your running speed (add that to my characters vampiric 119 speed and he's faster than most horses).

I don't remember exactly, I didn't have any problems. Theres a guy in the Brotherhood hang out that certainly sells it. However, be damned to invisiblity, chameleon is the one you want. Lets you fight and dance et al without breaking it.

    Playing a
Wood Elf; Blade, Marksman, Athletics, Acrobatics, Sneak, Restoration (Is that right?) and Light Armour.

Trying to play the good guy, have not stole yet just sneak around in dungeons and tear people down with those x3 sneak multipliers. Liking the class a lot, will only be a matter of time before he turns evil.

High Elf - Nightblade. V high destruction and I'm getting my conjuration up higher now too (nice to have a summon).
Sneak and security aren't among my majors, but they're high anyway, v nice to pickpocket people (espesh when they're sleeping), loaded now.
Also you can't beat the skeleton key, I love this thing.

Warrior (Blade and Heavy Armour)/Mage (Destruction)/Thief

For the first time ever in an RPG I'm 100% happy with my choice after getting into the game.

Umm hes right, everyone gets Acrobatics Athletics anyway so picking them was a bad move, i also picked them thinking it would help but everyone gets the leveling up on them.

What in the name of Lord Dagon are you talking about? Class skills increase much faster than other skills, thats the only reason I took them, so whatever else you're imagining its not very important.

You're much better off not picking those two as class skills and just running and jumping about while playing - there are more useful skills to pick as class skills.

Why is everyone so anti acrobatics and athletics? I dont care if you dont think they're useful, for my character it was essential in my mind that he be ultra mobile, so getting those skills up to high levels quickly was very important. So why exactly do you feel its appropriate to tell me what I should and shouldn't do with my character?

For one you don't know what my priorities are, and secondly you don't realise the benefits of it. Which do you think is more useful for my master marksman, being good with a blade or having a bunch of spells, or being so fast and agile that no opponent can catch him before he fills them with arrows?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Timans

I beg to differ actually, I originally thought this. i created a few char's but now i am 100% happy with my latest guy. I found picking Athletics and Aerobatics are very good especially as an assasin kinda guy.

I chose as major skills :

    Athletics
    Aerobatics
    Illusion
    Blade
    Marksman
    Sneak
    Security

I love being able to jump high, makes assasinating people easy. :D

Totally agree with you Zillah and i think our guys would get a long swimmingly, in fact, lets start a guild. :D

Noted. Keep your hair on. Its a discussion forum - I'm discussing it. Do what you like with your character.
IN MY OPINION I'd rather be able to do more damage, take more damage and steal more stuff than run faster and jump farther from the start considering that will happen naturally sooner or later. If we start arguing over what to say or do in an open ended 200hr+ RPG this thread will go on and on.

You people are making me rethink my choice now! I've put too many hours into him to go back now. I also thought Acrobatics was useless. In fact I considered it at first but then I read the manual and all it said was it would let me attack while jumping and fall longer distances, not jump higher!

Also Marksman seemed like it sucked in the tutorial dungeon(I originally had a ninja type character in mind and ended up opting for magic user with sneak and security) so I dropped it cos fireballs seemed a more reliable ranged choice. But I'd see how super useful it would be on rooftops hmmmmm.

here are a few pics of myself with my skills on display.

this is from last night though. so i'm up to level 12 now and i have almost 90 in my speed skills. and i am a expert sneak now. also i am now a vampire...

One train of thought against Acrobatics/Athletics as majors is that with the levelling system revamp in Oblivion you will level quickly with modifiers in those areas to the point where the enemies you face completely overwhelm your attack/defense skills. It happened to me early on and I had to lower the slider for a while and refocus on my marksman and light armour skills. Still I like both, for one I hate being too slow.
My guy's a Dark Elf custom class, now Expert marksman and Sneak. other majors are Light Armour, Security,Blade, Athletics.

You only level once all your majors have raised though, and since enemies level with you I really don't see how it would cause a disparity, maybe I am missing something. I like my A & A (athletics and acrobatics) because it enables my ranger to get out of a situation when needed (which can be often against the mage of a cave) and lets me strafe guys easily. Just yesterday I was fighting a mage who was tossing fireballs and silences at me, but because of my A & A I could jump over any fireballs and quickly sideste any other crap coming at me, all this while pinning him with arrows *while* I jumped.

It's especially useful outside when a wolf is on your case (or something worse) and you can just bound onto the nearest rock formation to saftey.

Also, each to his own, there is no right/wrong, it's all about what you want.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,371 ✭✭✭✭Zillah

You only level once all your majors have raised though

Not true, you level up once you've increased any of your class skills enough times. You can level each one once, or just one of them ten times or whatever. If you spend all your time using, say, alchemy, and nothing else, you'll level up without increasing any other skills.

    adventuer class of Imperial bastard.

Major skills blade, armourer, block, marksman, stealth, security and speech.

Speech actually levels up quite fast and the mini game for getting NPCs desposition up is quite easy once you get the hang of it.

Have no magic to speak of and am slowly trying to bring my restoration up.

Prob should have taken light armour as a skill: it seems to be going up fairly well though by it's self.

lol, nice. Ninja Twins? Oh yeah. :D

and _CreeD_, i don't think that will happen as the athletics and acrobatics are very hard to level up anyway even though you use them so often.

As for how they level up it depends on how you play (Same goes for whether you run into a skill disparity through levelling quickly). Personally I run everywhere, rarely use fast travel at all and tried a horse for about 30 mins just to see what they were like, hence athletics bosted quite often. I hit 100 speed around level 14 or so and having those nice big multipliers from all the running (It takes 10 level-ups in any major skill to provide a full character level up, the more you have used one of those major skills the greater the multiplier applied to it's governing skill when you up your character), which made my guy nice and zippy and usually capable of running rings around opponents, but if he got cornered at all or met something as fast (Like a mountain lion) he was toast. Focusing on my combat skills for a few levels evened the playing field again. This is a common experience if you have a gander at the official forums. Anyway, lvl 20 now, expert marksman and sneak and the guy's a terminator :).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I started again with a rather odd Dark Elf assassin/mage type combo. I think I might start off again, and see what I can come up with this time around. Half the fun of the game is creating characters, it seems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,112 ✭✭✭Blowfish

i ended up with a redguard warrior/thief. athletics is great as a major, the multiplier from it leveling up has boosted my speed loads, so now its 120, and im not even a vampire. I still haven't found anything that i cant move quicker than, even though im in heavy armour. The simplest way for me to kill enemies is to run up to them, then just run around them in circles swiping at them with my claymore. Since i'm so fast, they end up spending way too much time trying to turn to face me, and end up never getting a chance to hit back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,895 ✭✭✭✭Sand

Started with a Redguard, got about 3-4 hours in then restarted with a Wood Elf Archer using the sign of the Thief for max attribute benefit (sacrificed Endurance boost but worth it given Endurance is easy to raise fast and Luck isnt)- was actually messing with the character creator and just found the character more fun to play.

Been going for the 30 Point Level Ups to raise Attributes by 15 points each level. Means I raise level slower (dont have Athletics major for that very reason, but I use it to get +5 point Speed every level) but Ill avoid any problems with levelling too fast anyway. Also means I have to keep track of which exact skills I raise - I cant use restoration anymore, if I do itll increase an fubar my perfect 15.

My training regime includes finding Bandits and using them to train Block while shouting "Cmon, stop trying to hit me and hit me!" but Im still finding time to fit in the odd side quest and bit of exploration. Kinda like the Sims with edged implements right now.

Im now musing about building a new Redguard....
