I am sorry but I think it is plain wrong to date a relative even if the chance of genetic disorders isn't as big as with first cousins. There are millions of people in the world why the hell do you have to date a relative. Its bad enough that royal families do it never us plebs joining in.

It's not like it's his sister or first cousin for that matter. I think dating your first cousin is wrong and that's where I draw the line. Where do you draw yours then? You say dating your second cousin is wrong..would dating your 4th and 5th cousin be wrong? Cause chances are you met some of your 4th and 5th cousins before. As I said we're all related and Irleand is a small country with a small population. You can track back nearly everyone and find out your "related" in some way.

Do you know your grannys sisters childrens families then? I don't have a clue who they are.

If this is what your second cousin means then lets start calcuating:

Say my granny has four sisters and 2 brothers.
and those 6 individuals have children. (lets just say 3 each)
    That's 18 people.
And those 18 people all start their own families and have childern.
    18x3 = 54

That's 54 people out there (on average) that are "related" to me and are called my second cousins.

Now multiply that by two because I didn't add in my grandads brothers and sisters.

    Over a hundred.

Now that was just my granny and grandad from my moms side.

So I have about 200 second cousins out there somewhere.

Oh nooo I might end up meeting/marrying a "relation"

I think I would draw it at 3rd cousins but ideally I don't like the idea of it at all. Another thing is if I found a guy I was seeing had previously dated his 2nd cousin then I would drop him like a hot potatoe. He may only be with this girl a week but he will be forever know as the guy who dated his cousin.

Hi guys i met this girl in college and weve been chatting and flirting for ages, we were really getting into each other and finally hooked up last week for a date, everything went really well and we started to text

between the jigs and the reels we realised that my grandmother and her granddad were brother and sister, what relation does this make us to each other? Are we second or third cousins?

Is there anything wrong with what we are doing? We kinda at first took a step back and said okay this is a little wierd and went our seperate ways but then this week i couldnt stop thinking about her and last night she texted me wanting to know if i still have feelings for her or not because she thinks shes in love with me!

    What do i do??????

Your Parents are first cousins and you are second cousins, id imagine thats how it goes!! i dunno dude it sounds a bit weird to me.

Okay fair enough but do you know that you have about (I obviously don't know exactly) 200 secound "cousins" out there! In my opinion they shouldn't even be called cousins.

You might even have dated a second cousin and you don't realise it so I think it's pretty harsh to "drop him like a hot potatoe" If I found out that about a boyfriend I wouldn't care one bit.

I could have dated someone without knowing but if I found out I would end it immediately. I would expect the same of someone I was seeing if they continued a realtionship after finding out I would be really turned off. If I were in the OP position I wouldn't have to even think about, I wouldn't date them.

Im sorry but thats pathetic, the guy wouldn't even have known and its doubtful they would have gotten very fair in a week. pshh

I was making a valid point. A lot of people on this thread are saying stuff like "yeah go for it", "sure why not", etc which I think is very irresponsible considering the statistics involved with birth defects and mental illnesses in children born out of incest. Sorry if I offended you. And before people start saying "oh they weren't planning on having children, bla bla" - unplanned pregnancy happens a lot in relationships.

well im of to meet the cousin now, haha, so ill let you all know how it goes,

for people who are arguing the point about kids n stuff i tend to agree with you partly, in that maybe if i ended up in a long term relationship with this girl and we tuaght about having kids we would definately get medical advice and if it meant harming a child in anyway then it would be totaly out of the Question for me.

Aporia kinda put it really logically that we all have pretty much 200 second cousins out there so ya never know like. **** happens i suppose. Shes fairly sexy alright and by the way guys im a lad like, lol.

People who disagree with this im not going to try change your mind, in fact im in the process of trying to change mine like. Its not a turn on for me or her but i think we may be able to get on well together regardless like.

I suspect that if you havent had sex with her yet then it might be just too weird for both of you.

    Oh Jebus!

Let's be clear here. Sex between second cousins is NOT incest.

    [Google] define:incest

Incest: Sexual intercourse between persons who are related to each other within the degrees where marriage is prohibited by law.
    www.wcc.hawaii.edu/ir/Campus%20Security%20Report/Glossary%20of%20Terms.htm

    [/Google]

Second cousins can marry here without any restrictions, but would be well advised to have genetic tests first.

I'm pretty sure that first cousins can marry also, but they have to get permission from The Church (if they are having a Roman Catholic wedding). Most people would frown at this 'close' a marriage, though.

I know a girl who married her second cousin. Her parents were not in favour at the start of their relationship, but they came around.

Fact: God commanded many cousins to marry, including Zelophehad's 5 daughters, Eleazar's daughters, Jacob (who married both Rachel and Leah, first cousins), and Isaac and Rebekkah (first cousins once removed). All were ancestors of Jesus Christ.

    lol, it is fact
