I thought dylan was great. the band were very tight, but as everyone says if you come expecting the concert to sound like the album then you'll be disappointed. wasn't quite as good as the point in december but the set list was better i think.

    Alright...

I went in around one. It was raining during Clayhill so most of the crowd just sheltered under the stand during their set, but in fairness to them it doesn't seem that we missed much.

I went down for the Tiny Dancers 'cause I'd heard some of their stuff on their Myspace () and it didn't seem too bad. They were pretty enthusiastic about the whole thing and if the songs they played didn't all sound the same I'd say they were pretty good. They had an outro thing where Tiny Dancers was repeated in the Microsoft SAM voice, though, and that was fúcking crazy. It was literally three or four minutes of "tiny dancers...tiny fúcking dancers... tiny dancers... tiny dancers" over and over. Rock on! ;)

Ray LaMontagne was up next. What can I say? Pure brilliance. He really put energy into the songs, and while most of the crowd around me weren't getting into him at all, I was slightly drunk, and damn if I wasn't going to enjoy it. I'd missed him both times when he came to Kilkenny last year so it was my first time seeing him, and I wasn't disappointed with the performance at all. Shelter, Jolene and Trouble were the highlights, of course, but there wasn't a bad song in his whole set.

After that, Mundy. He was great craic. I wasn't a big fan of him before it, but he played a great gig. Galway Girl into Mexico was deadly.

Then, the Violent Femmes. Class. The crowd really got into it, even when they didn't know the songs. I was up near the front with some lad I ran into that I vaguely knew, who happened to be a huge fan. We were joined by some Northern Irish guy who was really into it, too, and we just enjoyed the whole thing. They played all of the classics like Add It Up, Blister, Gone Daddy Gone and Kiss Off. They even played Jesus Walking on the Water. Baptist Disco ftw! It seemed that nobody knew the lyrics to that or Gimme The Car, but it's all good; the three of us up sang along anyway. :)

Following the Femmes, of course, were the Flaming Lips. Unreal. The highlight of the evening. I wasn't as big a fan of them as of the Femmes, but they put on some show. From Wayne coming out in the bubble to Do You Realise?? it was just incredible. The stuff from the new album was all perfect, and we got Yoshimi and She Don't Use Jelly :D They stole the show, and if they'd headlined it would have been a much better finish than the disappointing...

Bob Dylan. What the fúck? It was a brilliant set of songs, the band was tight, Bob's voice was great; but there was something missing. All of the songs up to Stuck Inside... were great, but (maybe due to the fact that he was following the Flips or the fact that there was no interaction with the audience) they didn't seem to have that special something that you usually get at a Dylan Concert. After this the next few songs up to Highway 61 were pretty bland (with the exception of Ballad of a thin Man... great to hear that.) It was good to have Masters of War, too, but Summer Days and the same to encores that he has played at nearly every tour for the last few years made for a disappointing ending to a disappointing show.

I agree with you 100%. But in fairness to Bob (or anyone) following up from the Lips is mighty hard task. It's just a shame they didn't have enough time to play one of their famous covers, either War Pigs or Bohemian Rhapsody, the crowd would have went insane.

Judging on the performance and how well it went down, I wouldn't be at all surprised if The Lips will be asked to headline next year.

I don't think anybody expected Bob Dylan to be as exhuberant as the Flaming Lips. But some type of interaction would have been good. Where he sat on stage (out of sight of some people), his lack of conversation, and his leaving twenty minutes before time, were the real clinchers which made him disappointing.

I acknowedge that he sounded good (even if I didn't know most of the songs - I'm only a casual fan), but it was a pity about the rest - no matter who played before him I would have felt the same.

    Hopefully!

War Pigs was on Jools Holland the other night. Would have been nice to see it live, though. If they'd been headlining, I'm sure they'd have put on a longer performance than Dylan's 1½ hour set? Saying that, thank God he didn't play longer, tbh, if it would have been the same as the rest.

Dylan never says anything to the crowd at concerts - that's just his way of doing it!

Did Michael Jackson not get up with him?

Not usually, but he at least gets up and plays the harmonica or something. Here he hardly even looked at the audience.

Was I alone in thinking Bob was the highlight? Thought he was great, admittedly, from where i was I could see him no problem, but even still, the set list was great and he and the band were in great form.

That reminds me - I took a couple of pics on Wayne in the bubble on my phone as well - my head is fried today.

BTW - Wonder Woman is Michelle - Wayne's wife.

Anybody got setlists for Ray or the Femmes? I can remember the songs, just a bit hazy on the order. :p

Wow, that second pic is really good. And thanks for the info on Wonder Woman - was actually wondering.

    Here's a few from me:

I thought the same. But that's cos I'm a Dylan fan. I think if it was a solely Dylan gig, everyone would agree he was great. I think it's just the fact that there were a lot of people there to see only the Flaming Lips or Violent Femmes and they didn't care much for Bob. He was an anti-climax as far as they were concerned. Certainly after the 'showmanship' of the Flaming Lips frontman anyway.

On the contrary, I was there to see Bob, and it was a bonus that I'd be able to see the others. It was shown up as an average performance by better bands, tbh. When he played in Kilkenny the first time 'round nobody complained about his performance, even though he was joined by some great acts; and, similarly, he played two excellent shows in the Point last November. Just a bad night for him, in my opinion.

Edit to say: Big cudos to the event staff - the stewards up front were the most friendly and helpful I think I've ever seen at a concert. Well done guys and girls.

Can i just say that this was probably the most shambolicly organised gig i was ever at. No one checked any tickets (we were supposed to be in the stand but went to the pitch, 15 euro extra in ticketmaster), people were allowed to bring in drink, the amount of 2 litre coke bottles filled with vodka was huge. There was a girl in front of me drinking out of a glass bottle of whiskey, very dangerous. Overall very chaotic.

The gig itself. Obviously the Lips were class. Met Wayne before the gig, gets my vote for nicest guy in rock.Bob was Bob. Pulled out the big guns for the last two songs and saved the night. The guy is really old though so its unfair to expect too much i think.

You could see nothing from the covered stand. The stage was black and the band were all in black, you couldn't see who was who. Overall i really enjoyed the gig. Kilkenny too.

thought it was ok, just caught the lips and dylan. the lips ****ing pulled it off though. they came off far to early imo but they were only support i guess. nevertheless stole the show me thinks.

i lost my bus ticket though. payed my way on to last one and cursed my 'friends' with bus tickets got on and left me standing there with just enough money to cover the fare.

    yup, i agree.

Im a big Ray LaMontange fan, and twas a bonus to see him.
Violent Femmes? fun for like... 5 minutes. novelty wore off for me.
Flaming Lips, im a big fan too, they really got everyone going..

But cmon, Bob Dylan was who i was there to see, and wouldve enjoyed it just as much had i seen only him.
the man is just cool. he doesnt need to warm up a crowd, he doesnt give two ****s what you think. he's bob dylan.
yes, people who arent big fans probably think he is an ignorant asshole.. but... well... i dont :o

ooh i do love the introduction they give him...

anyways yeah, being a big fan, i can only say good things.
im probably biased, but i dont care

    the man has class.

Ballad Of A Thin Man, wonderful. we got it in Cork last night too :D

Haha - that's mad, I sent that review link to my wife and she recognised her hand in the pic of Wayne in the balloon!

mug_run_line - did you write the review and take the pics? if so then you were standing right behind us.
Were you the guy who put his g'friend on his shoulders (when Wayne was balloon-surfing) and then she fell off and knocked us all over!!!!

Anyone who expected audience interation from bob Dylan should have went to butlins or somewhere. All the other bands were crap and Dylan was the only decent performance of the day.

I really cant believe everyone thinking the lips were good. It's rock n roll i pay to see not aliens and santa clause. For me that type of carry on is just an attempt to disguise mediocracy.

I've been to see Dylan 3 times now and thats the best show i've seen.
Kilkenny is a great town by the way!

Took the pics alright but was zooming in to get the one of Wayne. So, blame free on the knocking over. :)
