Ok so Ive been reading through the majority of this thread since yesterday, really good stories, some freaky, some encouraging. thanks everyone.

heres what ive experienced in my time.

as a child for several years, i used to have this tall shadow like figure stand over my bed at night. not every night, but regularly. it was completely black, even if there was light in the room all you could see was black. i always got a bad feeling from it, like it wanted to scare me. i used to just turn my back to it and pretend it wasnt there. once or twice i told my mum, or the babysitter that there was a bad man in my room, but they just told me i had a bad dream.

there was this one time where the babysitter was minding us, and hours later when my mum came back, the babysitter couldnt get out of the house fast enough. the next day my mum asked her what was wrong. the babysitter said that she went upstairs to check on me and my little sister, and the door to the attic started opening and closing very fast and she could see red eyes peering out at her. then she turned around and saw black crows on the landing. a second later it all stopped and vanished.

years later, me, my mum and my sis were talking about that house we grew up in. my mum started telling us that she used to see an old lady who was see through and blue at the top of the stairs knitting. my sister freaked out because she used to see the exact same thing. i never saw the old lady but i then told them about the tall black figure that used to stand over me at night.

years after we moved out of that house, my sister was skipping classes in the toilets with friends in secondary school. they wrote out a ouija board on paper and my sister asked what the combination to her locker in dunnes stores was as she worked there at the time. there was no way either of the girls that were with her could have known the combination. the makeshift board they created told them her combination. my sister started crying and couldnt get out of there fast enough. she told my mam when she got home and my mam was furious, saying she had invited the devil into her life. mam had us praying every evening for weeks after that and had a priest over to bless us and the house.

thankfully everyone im close to is still alive so ive never yet experienced a loved one contacting me from the other side, yet!

most of my experiences were only ever in that house i grew up in, and they were all pretty negative but thought id share them all the same.

    great thread everyone! biggrin.gif

I have a story as well.
I am still a bit shocked to be honest.
Last year, my friend moved into an quiet old house on the country side. I went over for a coffee couple of times as its wasn't too far from were i lived.
I never felt comfortable there and I always found reasons not to stay there over night even if we wanted to go out for a drink. I preferred not to drink anything then.
The house is having a good bit of land around it and nothing done with it but a sheet just beside the drive way. One day I said good by to my friend and walked towards my car which was standing just in front of the Shed. Then I got that weird feeling somebody doesn't want me there and i felt like a child on somebodies land. I jumped in the car and drove of . I could not even look in the mirror because I was to scared to see somebody there. I had the impression even if I haven't seen anything about a grumpy old man.
Not so long after that I split up with my partner an needed a place to stay for a couple of weeks as it was a week before Christmas and all the letting agency's closed. As there was a huge Shed I could bring all my stuff with me and store it there. I never ever went near this sheet in the dark.
Now was the problem that i had my dog with me and she was only 4 month old at that time and she had to go out quite often and as there is no fence around so i had to go with a lead with her.
I had always that feeling that this old guy was standing there in the door of the sheet watching me and nothing could make this nosey puppy to go over there. He was always very grumpy like he did not want people on his land. One night i felt very bad because of my ex so i was a bit drunk and sitting outside for a smoke and just started to talk with him. I told him everything what happened and after that i never had that bad feeling in the garden again. I cant tell if it was after the chat we had or before but i was in the garden one night and could feel somebody watching me so I turned around to the Shed and there was a bright figure in the dark. first i thought it would be just the headlights of the cars passing by but I have never seen it before or again. My friend moved out then a few weeks later and we spoke about it but it was more like it was just in our heads.
Then a few weeks ago my friend met a guy over a dating site :-) As they met up they started talking about were she lived before and so it came out that he knew this house, which is in a different village then she is living now. He ask her how long she was living there and as she told him she stayed there for nearly a year he was very surprised. She asked him why and so it came out that few years or more back an old grumpy guy owned the house and the land and he did`nt like to see anybody on his land and he died there then. The whole village knows about him and not many people stayed in this house more than a few month. Neither my friend nor me knew about it, as we are not from Ireland and were not talking to the locals about stuff like that. So all these impressions I had, like he didn`t like us there and protecting his land and even the picture of him in my head was right. This Guy described him exactly like that.
When she told me about that i was quite shocked.
Sorry for this long post but I did`t even mention everything what happened there.

Kind of in relation to an earlier post about my deceased grandfather, but sort of interesting all the same. I have a dog who's fairly lazy, she only really runs around and barks if she's hungry or a member of my family comes in. I could come in from college she'll be thrilled to see me, if I went down the shop for half an hour and then came back, she wouldn't react much because she's already shown her excitement.

Anyway, back on point, the day after my granda had been cremated, my mum went to collect his urn. My dog was sitting in the front room when my mum came in, my dog went running out to the front door, ignored my mum and was running around and barking as if there was someone else there. When my mum put the urn down, my dog sat down next to it, wagging her tail as if it was someone she knew and wouldn't budge until it was dinner time, no matter how many times she was called. We had the urn in my house until we scattered his ashes, but my dog would regularly go down and sit next to it in the middle of the night. If we were out during the day, when we would come back she would always be sitting by it. (She's a house dog.) It really quickly became her favourite spot to sit and nap.

Normally if I was watching tv, she would sit down next to me and then move around to my dad, my mum then sister, then back to me and so forth. When we had my granda's ashes in the house, she used to factor the urn into her seating arrangement and disappear for twenty minutes to sit by the urn. Ever since we've scattered him, she has no interest in sitting by where the urn was. Her seating pattern has gone back to me, dad, mum and my sister. It's very strange! Anyone experience pets acting like this or have any thoughts as to why she behaved like this?

I've heard of stuff like that, but it was the first time anyone in the family experienced it firsthand. It was very strange! Kind of comforting too though. :o

I went over this a couple of times too and even googled some farming terms but I believe they mean 'shed'!

been a very long time follower of this thread and love reading all the stories on it. Some great occurances and some very good explanations.

Ive had a huge amount of experiences most of the time its just a flicker here and there of someone or shadows and lights etc, journeys in meditation and i think its very difficult sometimes to get out of your head and just let the experience be exactly what it is... its very hard to accept something that is not entirely physical.

The last two house ive lived in have been rented accommodations and both have been old house, the first one there was always stuff going missing and turning up in the most obvious places, same in this house, the odd shadows and impressions of people. The weird part was from a split second impression it felt like i could relay the entire life story of that person which felt very strange. We have a pet dog and she is normally very placid and lazy but every evening around the same time she would be bouncing around the house playing fetch with a ball and jumping up as if on people but there was never anyone there.. when we would sit down to have dinner id always feel like there are people watching me and would often catch a glimpse of an old couple passing by the door. Lights would go on and off (im an electrician and have tested all the wiring so i knows its not that) stuff would be moved... there would be random stuff left around that would have been put away. In the current house the minute we walked in the door i could tell there were spirits there, and they were more than happy to let us know if they werent happy about something. It almost felt like if we brought someone or something into the house that they didnt like the atmosphere would change completeyl which i know sounds bizarre but it did, and since moving in there anybody that came in and it changed we have found wouldnt be the loyalest of people or friends.

My brother went to Loftus Hall today, I'm sure most of ye have heard the story about it and now its open again.

Never been there. but have been on the ghost tour in edinburgh. Before booking it, 2 people did say it was the most terrifying night of their life. Ye, I went at the end of may there, me and my sister. Their was approximately 30-40 people on it. The tour guide told us before we walked through the streets of edinburgh that nearly in every tour people fainted or was pushed by some unknown object or person. We were told it was in a graveyard. The tour lasted an hour and 15 mins approx. We spent the first 45mins listening to the history of edinburgh(V. interesting but not what I expected on a ghost tour). Then at last he took us to the graveyard, it was around 10 30 at night, it was dark but not pitch dark, you cud still see. He took us around the graveyard, then into a room where a poltergeist was. Before we went in, he went on and on about how scary it was and that he wudnt dare go in and for the women to stand at the front cos the poltergeist hurts women and not men. Some entered the room and some didnt. My sister and I went in,at this stage I was a bit scared cos he seemed very serious about what he was saying. I was excited too about, o my god what will we see or hear and it was my first time on a tour. We were in the room waiting for something to happen, then some man dressed in a scream outfit came running toward the room and everyone screamed( not cos we were scared of the the man dressed as scream but just of the fright cos we didnt expect him to come). and thats all I have to say, they actually had to get someone to dress up as scream to scare us!!!

Brilliant thread, I've spent the past few evenings reading this, Bricking it at night time now :)

Anyway, I've only ever had one "experience" so to speak. It may well have been my mind playing tricks on me but I choose not to think so.

It was last October, I was at home with my son, he was in bed, I was sitting in the sitting room watching telly, and had loads of candles lighting. Next thing the atmosphere in the room just changed completely and the candles start flickering like crazy, at first I thought it was a draft but it didn't stop, and the candles were in different locations in the room, there couldn't have been drafts blowing on them all, and all the windows and doors were closed. Anyway I dont know what possessed me but I said out loud "Granda Frank are you here?" and the candles went even more crazy. So I said out loud " if your here can you make my hands cold?"I didn't want to ask him to appear or make a noise because I would have dropped dead with the shock, and I swear to god it felt like someone was blowing my hands with really cold air, or someone with really cold hands holding my hands. This lasted a few minutes but I wasn't scared, I felt really calm because I knew my Grandad wouldn't want to hurt or frighten me and it was him who always said that theres more to fear of the living than the dead! Then as suddenly as it started the cold sensation on my hands stopped, the atmosphere in the room resumed to how it was before and the candles stopped flickering.
When this was over I tried to ring my Mam to tell her what had happened and got no answer, a while later she called back to say sorry she missed my call, she was only home from my Grandads 10 year memorial mass, I'd completely forgotten it was on that night, I hadn't been Able to go cos my boyfriend was working and there was no one to mind my son, and my son is too hyper and noisy to bring to a church! I think my grandad was coming to check on me seems I wasn't at the mass!

Weirdly enough too, about a week later I got sick and had to have surgery, and when I came round I was brought to Franks Ward in the hospital (my grandads name was Frank)I think that was his way of letting me know he was watching over me during surgery, and it occured to me that may have been why he came to see me before too, to warn me I was going to get sick soon.

    Sorry for the long post.
Just want to point out before all this I wasn't a sceptic but I wasn't necessarily a believer either. That's the only experience I've ever had and it was ok because it was my Grandad, I hope I never experience the spirits of anyone I don't know, don't think the nerves could hack that :)

Thanks newmug, I thought so myself too!! Note to emeraldstar: that was the whole point of my message, their wasnt a ghostly experience which their shud of been. And it is about ghosts. Previously typed by emeraldstar: And also what you mean by "sheet". Shed?
Do u only critisise people on this thread??
Now back to the stories: My nanny and granda were in bed one night. And they seen a light shining in the window, my granda got out and seen a light down at the turn. The light, which looked like a torch, came closer and closer to the house, then vanished. In the morning they heard some priest had died who used to live in their house.

In my Nannys sisters house (my grandaunt)used to live over the road from where my nanny lived. The house closest to them was over a bridge and some fields. One night over in the house closest to them, the father got up and was going to the bathroom and glanced out the window and seen a light in the house moving from room to room, they were petrified. Everytime me and my sisters and brothers was walking around that area when we were young, we would run as fast as our feet would take us.

Nope, I really enjoy this thread; it can be really freaky and atmospheric, which is why I questioned the point of someone posting a story that lacked any ghostly experience and instead featured only some blackguard running around in a Scream mask.

    Hi Everyone,

I am 35 and consider myself a logical enough person. I have had two experiences- one seeing a spirit or ghost of a man and the other where I did not see anything but definitely heard something.

The first experience I had was when I was about 14. There was an old house very near to my home. It always looked enchanting - I'd say it was built in the 30's but by the late 80's /early 90's it was covered in Ivy. You could still see the sash windows through the ivy and there was a garage next to it . The door of the garage was broken and you could see an old 40's style car in it - looked a little like a big black Morris Minor or a London taxi. There were a group of us and on the weekends we would hang out - climbing trees and all sorts of stuff. I know we shouldn't of but we went into the grounds of the house to see the car because you could see it from the road in front of the house. We all thought it was cool and were in awe. Then my brother noticed a back window of the house was broken through age and rot. We all looked at each other and then went in.I know I know it was wrong but we were all curious about the house. We went in and of course the ceilings were all damp, there were plants growing inside and up through some of the floorboards but the house was still reasonably in ok condition. There were lovely fireplaces in all the rooms and in the sitting room there were 2 very old boxes on either side of the mantelpiece. I opened one and there was a child of Prague statue but it was still white - it was a plaster statue but wasn't painted like the normal Child of Prague statue with the enamel paint feel- just plain white plaster. In the other box was a statue of Jesus- again not painted just like a blank canvass statue. we all looked , thought it was strange and decided to look upstairs. the bathroom was falling apart but at the top of the stairs was a big sash window which opened onto a small place to put potted plants- it was like a tiny tiny patio.

We all left the house(Saturday evening) and said we would go back the next day to hang out in the old house. The next day we all met up in town and walked to the house. We went in through the back window again and I noticed the boxes with the statues were on the ground. I looked inside and the head off the Jesus statue was on the Child of Prague statue and vice versa. we all looked and we all went kind of quiet as it was scary. I know there was a bad feeling there but kept saying to my brother it was other kids in the area messing. I thought to myself though that there was no way anyone had been there as the house is in the middle of nowhere. We all went upstairs to the patio outside the window and sat down eating sweets. I put a stick under the sash window frame to hold it up so we could get back in.

So there we were eating sweets when I heard someone walking loudly up the stairs , I looked at everyone else around me and they looked fine as if they could not hear it. I stood up and looked through the window onto the stairs and there was no one- I mean no one but it was as if someone was walking up that stairs clear as day. I was unable to speak as the footsteps got louder as well as the feeling of extreme anger coming towards me. The stick holding the window up flew out like a bullet and the window shut as if someone pushed it and smashed .I looked at my brother and friends and jumped off the small patio (1st floor of the house) into the garden below I was so scared. I could hear my friends and my brother follow me as they thought it was a person coming - they hadn't looked. When I was far enough away they all asked me "Who was that , Who did you see?" I had to get my breath as I was panicking . I didn't want to scare them so I said it was the town bully - he must of followed us and was trying to scare us. We never went back to that house. I always kept that to myself until I told one of my friends years later. I think the spirit of the house or of whoever owned it was guarding that house and we were not welcome. I often pass that house still but it has been all done up now and I have no idea if there is a presence there.

The second experience I had was in my leaving cert year(1994). Another friend of mine lived outside the town where I live. One Saturday she invited me to come along to watch a video with her . I walked about 3 miles to her house bringing some soft drinks and m&ms. The road I walked on from the town has street lights but they end as you're leaving the town limits and you can see all the stars if it's a clear crisp night. I made it to her house and we watched the video , then we decided to play cards. When it got late I said I should make my way home. My friend offered her bicycle to me to cycle as it was pitch dark outside and there was a dynamo on her bike with a lamp. I began cycling down the hill - it would take me about 20 mins or so to get home. As I approached the town limits and I could see the street lights but I was distracted by something on the ground . I looked down and there was a giant wooden crucifix on the ground I swerved around it and there were beads coming up off it and they got progressively larger as they went up, going from very small where they were attached to the crucifix to the size of an apple or an orange towards the end of it - into the hands of a man whose face I could not see-his hair was brilliant white and he had his head bowed. He wore 1900's - 1910's style clothes. I was so spooked out by what I could not explain I cycled home like the wind. I told my father and he laughed - saying it was some old man with his shopping coming from town - and I must of frightened him so he started praying.

These are the only two experiences I've ever had but maybe some of you reading this will laugh and think I'm making it all up but I know what I saw and ever since these experiences I feel that there are things that we cannot understand- all of the things we want answers to. I feel lucky in a way to have experienced these things- they give me a comfort in a strange way now , anyways I hope some of you will find the experiences interesting.

    .

So you don't believe in the paranormal - yet you are in a thread for people to who want to share their experiences. There is a sceptics forum you know, maybe you could share your ideas there and 'help them see the light' as it isn't really appropriate here.
Would you go into the fishing forum if you don't like fish and complain about how it's silly?

There's a great forum for you in the Paranormal thread.. its called skeptics corner, alot of your comments are unproven and the term 'did u hear' is definitely not conclusive and i think considering the battering you have given anyone who has posted here i think you should be a little bit more considerate in what you say. People have respected your opinion and you should respect theirs, the thread is ghosts what are your experiences? its not here convince us all that our point of view is not valid, there are 88 pages of people here expressing their opinion and you think it is your right to pretty much tell each and every person they are crazy and to go and see the light.

If you feel you need this proven to you then this is your own personal issue and request and if you feel that way there is a way a new thread could be started instead of putting a downer on people sharing their stories

@Chloris (who instigated the following and made a mockery of the thread in doing so), face1990, Siipina, purified, and Rasmus -

This is NOT the place to debate the existence or validity of paranormal phenomena. Either take it to the Skeptics Corner, or PM each other instead.

This thread is reserved for the sharing of people's ghostly experiences ONLY.

Anyone who continues to deviate from this will receive an infraction, or better yet, a ban.

If you feel you need this proven to you then this is your own personal issue and request and if you feel that way there is a way a new thread could be started instead of putting a downer on people sharing their stories
my last ghostly sighting was earlier this year,i was on one of my holidays in haworth [bronty country] i was staying in a 18th century cottage,i woke up in the early hrs of the morning, about two am ,as i looked down towards the bottom of the bed,a dull orange ball of light started to materialize as i watched ,then it suddenly broke of into hundreds of little orange balls and vanished,i believe it was a friendly visitation that realized i could see it and went away ,

My Jack Russell Penny died 2 years ago this October, but the other day I was in the kitchen and swore I seen her walking down the hall, so much so I had to look twice. Sometimes at night as I am locking up I still hear her moving around in her bed in the kitchen. I don't know if it's just my mind playing tricks on me or if she is paying us little visits. :)

We have a pet dog and she is normally very placid and lazy but every evening around the same time she would be bouncing around the house playing fetch with a ball and jumping up as if on people but there was never anyone there..

Nice to know my pooch isn't the only one acting strange! :)

This one time when I was in the house on my own. I was watching T.V. when all of a sudden I heard a noise coming from the kitchen. I walked in (not freaked out at this point) and saw that the paper bag (that we were using as a recycle bin) turned upside down with rubbish strewn all around it. The kitchen was stone cold as well. I immediately ran upstairs to bed and hid under the covers and slept with the light on. bear in mind I was only 14 at the time. Very freaky although I'm not sure it was a ghost as I tend not to believe in them.
Took me a while to be able to sleep with the light off and stay in the house on my own :p

This isn't related to ghosts or anything but I think this is the thread for it. I once experienced what they call Sleep Paralysis. I woke up, unable to move anything else except my eyes. I was terrified, sweating and unable to scream. The bedroom door opens and a horribly disfigured woman floats in the door. She floats over very slowly until we are nearly touching noses and then, quick as it happened, it stopped. I went in to my mam crying. 11 years old at that point in time. I swear it was the most life like dream I've ever had in my life. It was like it was in HD. The single most terrifying thing that has ever happened me. It was a very stressful time in my life and I'm sure that has something to do with it.

Stress is the main cause of Sleep Paralysis so that would explain why it happened. I had it happen to me several times in my life, very creepy stuff especially the first time it happens you have no idea what's going on!

Hi just to start I love this thread and until I had an experience myself I did not believe id heard storys people told me and brushed them off, so ill start then.

About six years ago my parents were going away and they didnt want me to stay by myself as I was 7 months pregnant all during it I felt like someone was with me id see black shadows and quickly look behind me with no one there, so I went to stay in my aunties house.

I grew up around this house as it was were my nanny lived and my dad grew up in, so I arrived at the house and my auntie brought me upstairs were i was going to be sleeping and she brought me into my nannys old room were in, I had watched her die at home to cancer i was a bit nervous staying in the room because it brought back bad memories of that day.

So that night when I was in bed I took me a while to get to sleep but I finally did.

I was woken up by what i heard someone calling my name I opened my eyes and nothing there so I closed my eyes I heard it again so this time when I opened my eyes I was frozen in the bed I couldnt move and sitting at the side of the bed was a sillohette of my nanny white like she was floating and she smiled but at that point I was terrified I think it was the shock of what ive seen but I closed my eyes and when I opened she was gone till this day I wished id have just relaxed and said hello back.
