So it's coming up quite soon now(sunday and monday), what boardsers will be attending?
I assume they will be playing a lot of their new stuff...but if they don't play piazza, new york catcher...there will be war. :)
Quite looking forward to this weekend!

I'm desperately hoping to get a pair of tickets. I was led to believe I'd be getting them for Christmas but they never materialised and by the time I went looking, they were sold out.

Anything they play would be fine with me though, just hope they don't forget their EP stuff like Photo Jenny and Lazy Line Painter Jane. I think I'm probably the only B&S fan that would like to hear Beyond the Sunrise - that song is so underated, misunderstood and hated.

    Jimeatsmenu likes it.

Doubt they'll play that much from the new album. I'd say 6 songs from it at the most. I don't really mind what they play though. I'm just hoping for two good long gigs.

Oh btw, do you know who are supporting them and what are they like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,609 ✭✭✭comet

Yeah I'm going too, the tour opens tonight so we should have an idea of the setlist tomorrow hopefully. I suppose they have a lot of songs to draw from so its could be anything!
Brakes are supporting, they come highly recommended (not by me though, i didn't get a chance to hear their stuff yet), their singer was keyboard player in British Sea Power, he only left BSP about 2 weeks ago. Their drummer is in Electric Soft Parade.

I think they are the kind of band they could play songs i'd never heard of and i'd still enjoy it! I've been listening to most of their albums all week, god they are so damn good, i've been wanting to see them for years....

Should be a great show, just got tickets for it for a fiends birthday a while back but I'm quite looking forward to it too...

Think I should message them on myspace to play piazza, new york catcher. :v:

apparently they took an audience request last night, so you just got to do a bit of shouting at the gig!!

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,110 Mod ✭✭✭✭Tar.Aldarion

Ok then, I'll be the fool shouting at them. :)
I'm sure my two mates will help out too. Also, you should shout my request. (:

looking forward to sunday. Itll be my first time seeing them. Theres nothing like seeing a band you love for the first time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,592 ✭✭✭Ro: maaan!

Excellent gig. Very good mix of songs. And even the new songs sounded brilliant. The stand out songs for me would be...

    Your Cover's Blown
    Electric Renaissance
There's Too Much Love (really glad they played this)
    Johnathon David
    I Fought In A War
If You Find Yourself Caught In Love
    I'm A Cookoo

...to mention a few. Would like to have heard more from Arab Strap. But was most pleased with the set and the performance. Tomorrow's should be good. Hoping the set varies a little...

I'm of the exact opposite opinion. I thought it was a big steaming pile of ****e. Expecially after seeing Clap Your Hands on Friday.
They were just so embarrisingly twee. The setlist was complete tripe. Not a single song from If Your Felling Sinister or Lazy Line, TIJAMRS etc.
So disapointing, and they are my fav band too. Stuart doesn'y half talk a load of bollocks.
I wish I hadn't gone to this one and left myself with the memory of the Olypia gig a few years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 145 ✭✭speedy21

No way - This was much better than the Olympia gig!
Stand out for me was 'dog on wheels' - was expecting the set to be stuff from the 2 most recent zzz albums but it was a great mix!
Am tempted to try go again on Monday - imagine the setlist will be fairly different?

They didn't play anything from If Your Feeling Sinister???!

Jebus, I would have been gutted! I'm not so dissappointed that I couldn't go now...Ben Lee was class anywhoo!

    Wow, can't believe that!

    How terrible were the Brakes?

I mean I wasn't expecting much... but... my god they were f*cking awful.

I enjoyed Belle and Sebatian a lot though. I don't go to gigs too often though.. so I really couldn't tell you if it was a good gig or not though.

superb gig, superb performance, great banter. It was a cracking gig and the rapport between band and crowd was top class.

The set list omitted a couple of songs that everyone there I'm sure would have lived to hear but there was a great blend, with pretty much every album (and the Lady Line Painter Jane EPs -despite an earlier comment) represented. They didn't overdo the new stuff and the older stuff seemed to be picked to suit the musicians they had with them - and who could complain about that, the strings were fantastic.

    roll on part 2 tonight.

 They didn't play anything from LLPJ. A fairly strange but good setlist. Was strange that there was a lack of anything from IYFS and TBWTAS, but the inclusion of Dog On Wheels and State I Am In more than made up for it. Much better than the last time they played the Olympia I thought. I reckon it'll be a different setlist tonight.

Shiiiiiiiiite, forgot the gig's on tonight, left my ticket at home :(

'Dog on wheels' was on that series of EPs, unless I'm very mistaken.

What song did they play from the Lazy Line Painter Jane EP? Because I certainly dont remember one.
    Lazy Line Painter Jane?
You Made me Forget my Dreams?
    Photo Jenny?
    A Century of Elvis?

    They played neither of those.

Great gig and I was at CYHSY and Belle and Sebastian were much better in my opinion, sound was great too. They kept on about taking request but did they actually play anything anyone shouted for (was hoping for Fox in the snow)! Thought they could have came back for one more at the end, that was a pity.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 546 ✭✭✭elduggo

oh right, I didn't realise we'd gotten as pedantic to discuss what they didn't play from individual EPs. I was talking about the series of EPs that were brought out under the collective banner of 'Lady Line Painter Jane EPs', which also constitute CD1 of Push Barman. Dog On Wheels featured as part of those.

If we want to get that pedantic though, lets go through what they did/didn't play of each of their singles.

    Anyone?

Apologies, but I thought you were referring to the actual EP. I have never heard of these earlier EPs being collectively referred to as the LLPJ EPs, but what do I know?:o

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 546 ✭✭✭elduggo

ah, fair enough. Yeah, they were all rereleased as one 'collection', and were called the 'Lady Line Painter Jane EPs'. They are stocked on occasion in Tower and are a nice to own for any B+S fan, despite the availability of the songs on Push Barman.

Still the greatest single collection of songs ever - in my book anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭trippertds

I thought it was brilliant, songs were aces (the new album sounds great live espically Stevies' guitar solos). Crowd banter was fun ("from the miiiidlands" - that girl that requested "I don't want to play football" was right beside me... Bit of a looper). Anyone have a setlist? Had to leave early to catch the last bus and missed some of the encore.

I was the youngest there by about 5-6 years, thank god the bouncer accepted my "ID".

    10/10, Wish I had a ticket for tonight :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,609 ✭✭✭comet

I can post the printed setlist tomorrow. Would love to be going tonight too as you can be sure there will be a lot of different songs. It was my first time seeing them live, is stuart one of the worst dancers ever?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

What was with all the tiny, tiny women in the audience? I've never seen so many small women together in one room before.

I wish they'd finished up with Judy and the Dream of Horses, as they started to play it and then stopped.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,685 ✭✭✭Tom65

I wanted to hear more If You're Feeling Sinister, but a cracking gig otherwise

Fox In The Snow was on the setlist (I got one afterwards), and they began Judy, Dreams Of Horses as the last song, but then the drummer said no. Cursed drummers!

I thought that was very good, great lighting during it. I wasnt expecting it at all since I thought it would be hard to do live.

I actually thought they were good.

Did anybody hear/record them on Tom Dunne? I heard they played whiskey in the jar and were going to do it live at the second gig.

By my reckoning the overlap between sundays and monday gigs were 'I'm a Cuckoo' and 'Funny Little Frog'. The rest of the setlist was entirely different which was a very pleasant surprise for those who headed on both nights.

Last nights gig was exceptional, as was sundays. I'd give mondays the edge though, simply because they played 'Le Pastie de Bourgoisie' and 'Dirty Dream Number 2'. The emphasis on monday was more towards 'If You're Feeling Sinister', whereas sunday concetrated more on 'Fold Your hands'. Having been to both it was just like being to a single 4-hour long gig over 2 nights. It was incredible and heres hoping they won't take another 7 years to get themselves back over here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,181 ✭✭✭✭Jim

Enjoyed both gigs, 2nd night was better imo.
Two totally different set lists so I'm glad I went to both.
    Also enjoyed seeing Brakes twice.

Walked in at the end of brakes, they seemed pretty crap but their last song was good. :v:

We had a class time, thoufght it was excellent. Lovin' meat and potatoes! :)
Didn't play everything thing I wanted, by a long shot but that's to be expected.
First time we have seen them, the band are legends!
(remind me never to use a cloakroom again though...)
What was with all the people wearing stripes???
Might get some pictures up at some point, taken by one of the many tiny girls you are speaking of monkeyfudge. :)

Too bad we forgot that bruxelles closes really early on a sunday, we forgot and were there for only like five minutes after the gig before it closed :(
Oh ya, those were annoying girls with the paper aeroplane...

Anyway, class weekend in dublin, good job B&S.

    me = well pleased!

"I'ts a bath night and you all have work in the morning, but you still wanna dance, y'know"

Does anyone know of any bootlegs floating about? I'd love to hear the gig all over again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,592 ✭✭✭Ro: maaan!

Got some of the quieter songs recorded, but with poor sound quality. Not really worth uploading tbh.

Second night was brilliant. Front row centre of the balcony. The set was excellent. Just because it was different really. I'd have been happy with whatever songs they played as long as they hadn't played them the night before. Really expected more of an overlap of the two nights. Very very very happy with both gigs.

Anyone have a setlist for the second gig?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28 milkytigerrr

I was at Monday's gig and it was excellent. Great setlist. They even played "Me and the Major" a coup for me as I had been to shy to shout it, then did and they played it next song. I got some great pics as I was in second row. If anyone wants them, just pm me.
I'd really love to see a setlist though as the two hours were filled quickly and I'd like to know which stuff off the new album I heard (awaiting it excitedly from cdwow).
I saw them at the Olympia 7 years ago and my God what a change! The Oxygen set in 2004 was good too but its so different to see a band on their own terms.
They looked to me like a band at their best, in the middle of an inspirational zing! Of course I do tend to get like this when they release each album.... Dear Catastrophe... being the only exception... never quite 'got it'. Now I'm rambling.
And while not entirely agreeing with the above, I will admit Stuart is a very funny dancer. Limbs everywhere with an odd infectious beat. It's a little..... embarassing (???!!) to watch actually. Will be killed by pretentious finger-clicking types for saying that??

excellent dancer?? no way, he dances like a girl, it was embarrassing.
Although i couldn't care less what he did on that stage, the music was top notch and I got to shake his hand too, all the front row did.

Well tom dunne played it at the end of last nights show and talked over the end the bastard. he said he will play it tonight along with an interview with them. They got a few lyrics wrong in it but it is still worth a listen.
