Who would you like to see play Slane this year? For a rock concert with such huge headlining acts in the past, theres not too many bands left that could fill it imo. Personally I would love to see The Who when they tour this year and AC/DC if they ever come back to Ireland. Maybe a double header?? That would be too much to ask.

i heard that it was going to be Green Day headlining. That wuld be savage. Your right there isnt alot of bands around that can do it. As long as they dont go wit that rap sh*t again,

I'd go for someone like AC/DC or The Who, I like those two suggestions. Anyone big, legendary and ROCKtastic.

Green Day??? pffffffffff......now The Who, theres a band that are worthy of the Slane stage!!! and they're touring again this year

they wont ever play rap/hip hop at slane for a long long time i think, i am a rap/hip hop fan but i do agree slane has always been more or less a rock event

Coldplay!i seriously think that they could pull off a brilliant show at slane!them and ac/dc would both be brill headline acts!

Coldplay are not a stadium rock band, nowhere near it in fact.

I'd love to see any of these headlining:

    Pink Floyd,
    Metallica,
    The Who,
    AC/DC,
    Rolling Stones...

Coldplay were one of the most impressive acts at live eight!Robbie Williams was one of the best performances at slane and he aint stadium rock!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,936 ✭✭✭fade2black

It's not really about Stadium Rock, more the stage presence and charisma to carry off such a large scale event. Coldplay are a fine band and I have a lot of time for them but their sound and their presence is more suited to a smaller venue - they'd be dwarfed by Slane.

Slane was always about stadium rock. Queen, Bruce Springsteen, Thin Lizzy, U2, Guns n Roses, Stones, Bowie... I think Robbie Williams just about got away with it because hes an exceptional showman. He was that day anyway. Stereophonics, Madonna, Bryan Adams etc dont fit into that category and were disappointing imo. It will take the likes of The Who or AC/DC as I mentioned to bring back the old spirit of Slane. And thank God Eminem didn't play. Coldplay are great live but leave them in Marley Park.

He has no source, but it would be a sad day for me if greenday headlined, do you think the could sell out slane? not by themselves obviously!!

Rage Against the Machine are reforming and are playing Slane.

    I wish...

I'd love to see The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd or David Bowie. Or all of the above, though that may be wishful thinking!

No it wouldn't...It really really wouldn't!
I'd love to see pink Floyd, but I don't think Slane is the place for them.
TBH I couldn't give a crap who headline(unless Peppers do it agin, they are releasing a double album this year!) cuz I'm heading to the Electric Picnic WOOHOO

The annual "I think AC/DC should bring ROCK back to Slane" thread...

Bowie could put on a great show, and he's due a gig since he had to pull out of Oxegen. God knows he had a good time the last time he played here...

I'd cream myself if Floyd played but it's wishful thinking. Won't happen. If they ever play another gig it will be in London.

David Bowie was not stadium rock when he played Slane. He was piss poor 80s Bowie*

    * which sounds great on record with the benefit of hindsight but he died a savage death at Slane... a gig that was long regarded the worst Slane gig until the recent crop of ****e

I hope so, but Billie Joe reportedly said that they're taking a long break now, and they'll be working on their new album this year, so not to expect anything too soon. (he wasn't speaking directly to us though, just in general lol)

I really hope they come back to play at Slane, I really want to see them again!!

Did you foget about Milton Keynes?? 135,000 people over two days, my friend. I know there are more people in England, but if Robbie Williams can do it over here, green day are surely capable of it! ;):p

Mountcharles said he wont have a band who headlined Slane before to headline again. U2 were an exception understandably

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,673 ✭✭✭✭senordingdong

Greenday would be a bad idea.
It'd be as much of a gamble as last year was.

I totally agree that the headline should go to AC/DC or someone along those lines but I wouldn't object to seeing Greenday as one of the supports.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 222 ✭✭**elaine**

I heard rumours about greenday headlining but I would prefer to see the likes of metallica or AC/DC.
What date is it usually confirmed??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,673 ✭✭✭✭senordingdong

As much as I lvoe them and all....does anybody really think Metallica would be appropriate?

I tihnk they're worthy, but I don't think it'd be right for a band like Metallica to do it.

agreed metallica wouldn't be able to pull it off

Pink Floyd for slane would just be ****in amazing!!!!

Having seen clips of green day at milton keynes, i reckon they could pull off slane to be honest.

But, after last years shenanigans they really do need some old school rock headliners!! The Who or AC/DC would be cool, with bands like muse, radiohead supporting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,743 ✭✭✭Rockee

THE WHO BABY THE WHO!!! How cool would that be to see the laser show during 'Baba O'Riley' and 'Wont Get Fooled Again' all around Slane? If only Keith Moon was still around...R.I.P. Legend Forever

Am i right in saying that U2 hadn't headlined Slane until the elevation tour? they opened for Thin Lizzy did they not?

Or are you just saying that Mountcharles would let them headline again? Would be silly not too imo

Regarding who is headlining, I think that there aren't really that many bands who would be able to shift 80,000 tickets on their own, in recent years I believe the support acts for the day are just as important as the headliners

No I meant he let them headline twice but it was the same year. They did open for Thin Lizzy

The Strokes but not as headliners.. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 241 ✭✭antifyre

They could very easily do a joint headliner..... say Pink Floyd and the Who.....or some other combo ala Neil Young and Pearl Jam etc....

That would guarantee some pegs on the pitch...

How long would you have to queue to be at the very front at Slane?

    53hours.. at least.

Floyd would probably sell two gigs on their own. Also the Who I reckon would sell it out on their own

How about Axl Rose finally gets round to releasing Chinese Democracy in March like Slash said and Guns n Roses headline Slane on their comeback tour. I know Mountcharles said he wouldnt want the same band headlining twice but this is a very different band. Then Velvet Revolver who are releasing a concept album around the same time could support. (Yeah right)! That'd be amazing. But one of those bands would never reduce their egos enough to support the other. Still Guns headlining would be class

Oh God please noooooo!!!!!!!! Won't ever happen anyway since it would kill off Slane for good. Velvet Revolver supporting GNR??? You're havin' a laugh!!!!! The current Guns N Roses is a pathetic imitation of the real Guns N Roses.

I wan't The Who, it should be The Who and it could well be The Who since they are touring in the summer and will hopefully have a new album.

Bet you it will be C**dplay tho'!!!! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Yep, has to be The Who! I know they're a tad wrinkly now(or at least whats left of them) but hey fook it!

Id personally love to see U2 do Slane with Aslan as the main support act. They could make it an all irish event with the likes of Paddy Casey,Picturehouse, Munday, Kila ect

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 181 ✭✭skapunkkeith

green day all the way, they would easily sell-it out in minutes, i know that their either playing slane, the point or croke park this year, so fingers crossed

They said in a recent interview that they were playing no gigs in 06,just writing

Greenday are definitely not playing croke park (it's only allowed to host three a year, 2 definitely gone to bon jovi and robbie wiliams and the other has been provisionaly booked by robbie williams i think), they won't sell slane out in minutes, for there last gig in the point i got tickets weeks after they went on sale. I personally don't think they are good enough to headline slane. i've seen them 3 times. The first time was great the next two were pretty much the same show. I think they probably are going to headline though. If they eventually sell out slane i'd imagine the fact that it is slane (an almost religious event to irish music fans) will help. I'd say the ticket prices will be much higher then if thy played the point. I'd like to see Radiohead play it some time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,743 ✭✭✭Rockee

Ugh, Radiohead...if they were to play then it should only be stuff from their first 3 albums...after that I dont think the passive festival goer would be too interested in their 'experimental' phase...i.e their last few albums being kack.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 241 ✭✭antifyre

    ahem....

the last few Radiohead Albums have not been kack....
when the dust settles in a few years, the direction Radiohead have taken will distance them from the rest of the pack as a band willing to do new things not release the same stuff again and again.....

Everyone to their own opinion, but jesus be intelligent about it....

In regard to Slane, would love to see Radiohead there, but their fanbase is not that big anymore to push a gig that huge (and I don't think they'd want to anyway)

I love U2 but...again? I know it was Croker last year and we know about their Slane residency a few years back but nah, personally I think we'ed be grasping at straws if they played Slane AGAIN...not as bad as the Chili Pepper residency in Ireland every summer though! Bit it Lansdowne, Slane, Phoenix Park...they 'Cant Stop, Addicted To The Shindig!' (shudder)

Antifyre...Radioheads fanbase isnt as big anymore because of their last few albums! I am being intelligent about it.

Rockee, when I say intelligent, I mean say something more than 'kack'!

I'm not being sarcastic, but well done on having an opinion. Most don't bother, or say what the guy/girl before them said to be cool.

My opinion differs from yours, thats cool..... why do you think the last two albums were 'kack'? Because they did'nt have any melodies? Because most of them don't have guitars on them??

They went in a different direction, that does'nt mean that the albums are musically torture...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,743 ✭✭✭Rockee

Yeah, maybe kack was a wrong word! Cheers, for valuing my opinion. I was a massive Radiohead fan around the time of those first 3 albums. The Point for a few nights or something would be great for Radiohead to play their current style of music. I dunno, I guess when I think of Slane I think of happy faces jumping up and down to guitars!
