Two people have been killed in a road traffic collision on the N7 Naas Road at Citywest.

The two were two young males who were travelling in the same car. Their car collided with another car, which was being driven by an off duty garda, who is in a serious condition in Tallaght Hospital. The incident happened at about 6am this morning.

Gardaí say the section of the N7 southbound between the Saggart and Grangecastle exits will be closed for most of the day. Traffic is being diverted through Saggart and Rathcoole.

The Garda Síochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. This incident has been referred to GSOC by the Garda Commissioner under section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005.

Anyone who may have any information that could be of assistance to the investigation are asked to contact the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission at 1890 600 800.

Also seen this today, rather shocking if it is true

    http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/mhojkfmheyey/

More than 2,500 gardaí have not completed the "required driver training course" for the force.

The Department of Justice has admitted that one fifth of members must be given special dispensation by supervisors to drive Garda vehicles.

The findings came about after Fine Gael TD Damien English raised questions about the number of gardaí qualified to drive official Garda cars.

    Rail dispute results in disruption
    Sunday, 2 March 2008 16:50

A dispute over rostering between management and unions at Irish Rail has led to disruption of some train services.

Further disruption is also expected on some commuter routes tomorrow.

Both sides in the dispute are to hold talks at the Labour Relations Commission tomorrow the morning.

Most passengers departing Heuston Station, Dublin today were unaffected.

However passengers travelling from Dublin to Galway at 1.45pm had to take the bus.

Buses were also put on for those affected by the cancelled services between Cork and Mallow and Tralee and Mallow.

Tomorrow the first train from Portlaoise to Dublin has been cancelled as has the 5.30pm train from Heuston to Carlow tomorrow evening.

I haven't seen this mentioned on the DB site but since Friday the 77 has been travelling a different way.

From Jobstown it leaves the terminus, turns at the first roundabout and instead of going up the Jobstown Road, Russell Square, Brookfield Road, Cheeverstown Road, Cookstown Road and left on to the N81 up to the Square it travels back down the Fortunestown Road towards the Jobstown House and turns left onto the N81 up the the Square.

It's the same change coming back from the City.

According to the drivers I've asked this is because the work on the Cheeverstown Road/Cookstown Road has made it to difficult to navigate in a bus.

Hopefully this is of help to someone.

Is the terminus still at the old terminus or is it further back along the route? That a lot of people inconvenienced.

The 8:48 Clonsilla to Docklands didn't appear this morning so I got the 8:58 to Connolly (I boarded at Coolmine). Gawd it was horrible. I got to read my paper until Castleknock when the surge of people behind me left me with my face planted into the yellow grab rail.

I rang Clonsilla when I got to work and they said that it left at 9:15. It was unable to turn back (after coming from Docklands) because the points were stuck.

Of course, there were no announcements to those of us standing freezing on the platform

The terminus is in the same place. Hope this will be a bit more descriptive.

The new route means about 6 or 7 bus stops around Jobstown are not served.

    Tuesday, 4 March 2008 15:00

The Labour Relations Commission was expected to renew contact with management and unions at Iarnród Éireann today, as part of the continuing efforts to resolve a dispute over driver rostering.

Talks at the commission adjourned without agreement yesterday.

The dispute has caused disruption to train services.

Today's 6.30am Portlaoise to Dublin Heuston train and the 5.35pm train from Heuston to Carlow are cancelled.

Ten trains in the north Dublin area were also cancelled yesterday.

Swift sailings cancelled amid gale warning
    Saturday, 8 March 2008 19:15

All Irish Ferries Swift sailings on the Dublin to Holyhead route for today have been cancelled. The cancellations followed warnings of gale force winds on all sea areas today.

Passengers will be accommodated on the cruise ferry sailing at 8.55pm tonight. All other Irish Ferries services and all Stena Line services are expected to sail to schedule today.

Weather inland is expected to be stormy tomorrow night and on Monday afternoon with flood alerts issued to Dublin coastal areas.

Storm force winds and high tides are forecast to bring one of the strongest storms of the winter over the next two days.

Flood barriers have been put in place, and sailors and fishermen have been warned about conditions on the Irish Sea.

A band of exceptionally low pressure is expected to bring severe winds - particularly in the south of the country.

Sea defences have been erected at areas north and south of Dublin city. Temporary road closures have also been announced.

Dublin City Council says there is a likelihood of flooding tomorrow night and early Monday afternoon because of high tides.

Dam bags have been placed on seafront areas in Sandymount, Ringsend and Clontarf.

Wind gusts of up to 120 or 130 km/h are likely, with rainfall of about 20-30mm expected between Sunday night and Monday.

Unusually high tides are also posing a risk of flooding in some areas.

The Liffey boardwalk and nine sections of road will also be closed during the flood alert periods - from 11pm on Sunday night to 2am on Monday and from 11.30am to 12.30pm on Monday.

Met Éireann is also advising drivers to expect difficult conditions on roads around the country.

    Hi all

After arriving to Pearse station last week to find it closed, I realised -once again- it was a real pity I didn't check the Irish Rail site every bloody time I take a train!

I access an RSS reader a couple of times a day to check on headlines etc from my favourite sites and I thought it might be handy if you could get an RSS feed for Irish Rail travel alerts. Rather than hold my breath, I have created my own one which pulls info from the Irish Rail site:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/IrishRailsNewsAlerts
If anyone who uses rss feeds would like to give it a try and let me know how they get on I would appreciate the feedback.
