I installed a woodpellet boiler in my house 2 years ago... it was the worst thing I ever did.... There is an awful lot of work with them... totally temperamental...If I had my time over again I wouldnt choose it. The company I dealt with are a Cork company and a nightmare to deal with... very unfriendly, unprofessional and have a rubbish back up service once the money was paid over. They also gave me false information on the upkeep of it......... Go for oil... at least u know its going to work.

have 3 of these wood pellet unist installed, biggest is 40kw, the success in them depends where ye buy them from. Some of them bought from Irish makes, wont name any, are pure rubbish.
Generally, Austrian brands are top notch.

Calorific value and heat output depends on where ye get the pellets from

I find they heat a well insulated house fine, no probs, but overall, not much cheaper than a high efficiency, ie excess 92% condensing oil boiler

    Cest la vie

    Dear Friends ;
I have been reading comments about wood pellet boilers and the fear People have about about them ; I would like to answer these questions . Thanks to Sustainable Energy Ireland for a complete **** up when wood pellet systems
was first interduced into Ireland . There was no one manufacturing pellets in Ireland and no storage system for the pellets . There were to many suppliers with converted oil unit that could never work ; Thank God they have gone bust, but they have done much damage to a good heating system . So ===

    WARNING
    1. You can not use a Wood Pellet Boiler the same way as a oil boiler .
ie: turn on for one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening.
remember wood burns slower than oil .
    2. A good wood pellet boiler must have a larger volumm of water to heat,
or a Buffer Tank . Its should not go cold ie: its is more Energy Efficent
to reheat and reheat the water than from cold start .
    3. Wood Pellet Boiler will have Automatic ignition and will go on and off with
the thermostat . To alow it to modulate ( on and off ) it is best to use
    a system line unit .
    4. System Line Unit is just a Steel Box ; the water from your Boiler goes
into and returns back again to your boiler . when the set tempture is
reached the boiler modulates and stops , this allows the boiler to
maintain its heat at all time .
    5. The System link Box will have other out lets what we can zones ie :
one for hot water , one for heating system one for hot tub etc .

    6. Storage System : is just like your oil tank : its out side ; the lorry comes
and pumps the wood pellets into it ; a auger through the wall brings the
pellets into your boiler automatic when required , its that simple .
and NO the pellets do NOT get wet . just get good pellets . Belcas .

    7. Cleaning the boiler good hover is all you need : maybe every 3/6months
When the air supply and the feed supply of the pellets is correct there
will be very little ash .

    8. My experience with renewable energy in Ireland is that wood pellets will
be the fuel of the future in Ireland , if we can get the farmers to grow it
Solar only work if the Sun shines believe me .
Wind Turbines only produce electricity when the wind blows .

    9. I have a Dalessandro Wood Pellet boiler and solar in my house , the solar
is a complete waste this summer .

    10. I have alway 230 liters of hot water ready to go 24 hours a day .
So I hope I have been of some help ; believe me when its set up right
its the only system that works in this country .

What type of wood is used in wood pellet burners anyway? I mean, what type of tree is used? Is it willow?

    Just wondering, thanks.

no tis spruce with sometimes a bit of larch or pine mixed through it. willow wouldnt be suitable for pellets. it is burnt as chip though maybe thats where you got it from

If I was choosing I would rather spend the difference in price between a WPB and an oil boiler on better insulation than the original insulation plan.

I myself would fit Oil, buffer tank and a good quality stove with back boiler and solar panels for summer hot water.

You could replace the multifuel boiler stove in the living room and install a log/coal gasification boiler although with the price of wood here I think coal is the better choice cost wise.

    Insulation is the key though:D

    Stove Fan:)
