Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Right, back to proper modelling.. :-P

After spending a few months sojourning in the Airplane/Chopper regime, I've returned to my roots for these two.

The Tamiya Marder 1A2, and the AFV Club Wiesel 20.

The Marder was an unusual one. I knew it wasn't exactly a modern kit (not least I bought it about ten years ago), but I was not expecting the 1977 copyright on the molds. A very good kit for the age, although the two parts of the molds didn't match up fantastically well. Something I was not expecting was the engine, and there is no indication on the box that it comes with one. Compartment is a bit bare, but it certainly would make a good start if you have an inclination to superdetail things. Not many kits come with an engine.

    mardfrnt2.JPG

    Mardrear.JPG

As I look at the pictures, it seems I forgot to Krystal Kleer the troop compartment periscopes. Oops. (They didn't come with plastic sheeting)

The AFV Wiesel is an interesting kit. For starters, it only has 16 roadwheels, unlike the normal 28 or 32 to drive you mad. The tracks on the real thing are rubber-band, but I haven't been able to properly glue them together to look seamless. Comes with a photo-etch set, most noticeable as the exhaust guard, though folding and gluing is a royal pain in the arse.

    wiesrear1.JPG

    wiesrear2.JPG

Here they are together for relative size. The Wiesel really is a tiny little model, there are 1/72 tanks which are larger than it.

    Mardwiesel.JPG

Took quite a leap of faith to go from the nicely done, clean paint job to go over the lot of it with drybrush, instead of simply highlighting the raised details. I think I lucked out, the overall 'faded' look seems to have worked.

    This is not mine.
It is a display model that goes round trade fairs.
Only once have I seen better water diorama modelling.
I took the picture for reference for when I have a go at this type of model.
    Enjoy :)

Really nice paint job. That's why I took the photos for reference later.
    I'm always fascinated by "a masterwork". :)

The best diorama I ever saw including water was a submarine pen, with refuelling & rearming going on, and all under attack from the air.
An intimidating subject - but the result was incredibly realistic.

Railway landscape buffs are usually good at water too.

Them tanks are the smallest i ever saw and that helicopter, huge!

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,456 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

Technically they're not tanks, they're categorised as weapons carriers. The idea is to give airmobile forces a little fire support. The chopper is a CH-53 Stallion.

    Yeah, it's a 26cc 2 stroke, 25:1 mix. It runs for about 40mins on a tank (700cc)

Just incase you do any damage the fg`s fitted with the rc230 engine run on a mix of 50:1.

At this rate we'll all be trading our Cars for Boats...speaking of which, if you nail the throttle through a puddle in you guessed it...that Ski-Vo which is deadly, can it go on water! :D or to put it in scientific terms 'aquaplane'.
If it nose dives put slightly bigger skis on it! Im dying to know :p

Hey Zt. I havent had it in water >>yet<<. But I dont see why it wouldnt work as long as i kept the rpm's up. It rips through the snow though!! I will be trying that this coming spring though. Gonna take it to the beaches and see how the ski's do in the sand.

If you go fast enough through water it will float a bit like snowmobiles. i wonder does that go for the same with 4 wheels?
    *idea*
    :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4 damisdad

I would think so. The swamp buggies do pretty much the same thing and basically mash the gas and go. I have another set of the paddle tires. Might have to try that in the spring. Cant wait to find out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭Plug

Yeah them paddle tires look class but are probly crap on the road, offroad, well thats a totally different storey!
