Part of the fun of freshers week is bein lost. Dinna worry lads and lassies, it's overwhelming in a good way! Just have your list of what you GOTTA do (register, meet tutor etc.) and your timetable of what stuff is on. I said before go to as many of the latter as possible: live bands, clubs, comedians and booze booze booze. Oh to be a fresher again and do it all.. I'm so jealous. Feck it I'm goin in masquerading. Yis'll see me walkin around looking lost, deaf n hungover with unexplained glitter on my knees...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

Oh yeah so my point is we'd just wreck it for yas if we told ya everythin. It's more fun findin out for urself. When I discovered the JCR (about january!) I was so proud of myself...

Lets leave this meetin for a few weeks IMO. Cos we're still pretty much strangers..

    whats the JCR guys?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

yeah it does, in the junior commons room(if i recall its name) , just go off to the right near the counter of the JCR and then take a left.......

JCR is a cafitera type place in goldsmith hall(beside pearse street dart station) , does rolls n sambo's, no hot food...fairly cheap.

They do do hot food. You've obviously never had a dead pig (aka heart attack roll).

Dead Pig is the only way to go. Pool tables in the back, where the old smoking room was. Some times bands play there as part of durns. Risk tournaments and table quizs are also held in there. I usually play pool in there on fridays that I don't have labs instead of studying.

as part of durns.... whats durns?

I've heard talk of better food being brought into the JCR. And nicer rolls (the bread they use is pants). I'm just wondering what will everyone call the smoking room now? The back room just doesn't have the same ring to it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

Cos "smoking room" had a great ring..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭Chick

i think back room sounds better than smoking room...?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

no no no, it has a better ring if you think of it being smokin'! As in something Will Smith would have said about something cool circa 1992. Not as in cancer death stick of doom.

Not really on topic but I'll reply in-anyway. :)
From what I've heard it's some sort of spiritual/meditation thing. The reason it has gained such world wide following is because of it's oppression in china. The decreed it a vicious and evil cult and imprison people for practising it. I think some trinity student got imprisoned for it so there was obvious uproar..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭Chick

yeah it wasnt on topic sorry, im a tad random like that in case ya havent noticed!
vicious and evil cult eh? think ill steer well clear from that one so! just curious :)

Er.. you gotta remember that it was the Maoists that declared it as such.. They teach that the world is flat too so I wouldn't take their opinion to seriously..
I would have no such negative opinions of it, it aint a religion no more than yoga is tho there's less bending. There'd be a lot of chinese students doing it..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭Chick

    ok so, thanks

Anyone see Six Degrees of Separation? I never had any respect for Will Smith until I saw that film. An amazing piece of work (also has donald sutherland in it and a couple of other familiar faces).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

A lot of people in college you can describe as follows:

The brains to get the points for <insert course as appropriate> but absolutely no cop on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,798 ✭✭✭Funky

Funnily enough that doesn't apply for most people doing CS because it's such low points though :P

It seems to be the people who actually want to do it...

Now orts on the other hand !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

erm low points compared to what? not to other CS courses.....
So ye'd have higher points requirement for yer field, his statement still applies imo

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭Chick

    orts, god yeah its insane!
but at the end of the day which would you consider to be more valuable ; common sense or intelligence?

    the mind boggles....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73 ✭✭MacXP_Irl

I know its been brought up in previous posts, but points and all that are completely irrelavent once you're in college. The LC was just a measure of how well you can memorise stuff. All i'll say, just from my opinion and not saying that everyone is the same, is that the higher the points scored the more likely the person is to be...a bit odd! eg lot of TPs slightly odd, CS less so ant the oorts are pretty rounded ppl!
As for the will smith debate, Fresh Prince was classic, Bad Boys and iRobot were good too, independence day was ok...but he has made some royal turkeys in his day...

depends there now. the exams are a test of that but there are various ways to learn said info. I could never just memorise stuff out, i hated doing that so what I did was simply get the basics, understand it and work everything out from there. but then again i did all the mathematical subjects really. or at least the ones that required reasoning (dont have the patience to sit there and cram stuff i dont understand).

    on that note :

Now this is the story all about how
my life got flipped, turned upside down
and I'd like to take a minute just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel-Air

In West Philadelfia born and raised
on the playground where I spent most of my days
chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool
and all shooting some b-ball outside of the school
when a couple of guys said "we're up in no good"
started making trouble in my neighbourhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
and said "you're moving with your aunte and uncle in Bel-Air"

I whistled for a cab and when it came near the
licensplate said "Fresh" and had a dice in the mirror
if anything I could say that this cab was rare
but I thought now forget it, yo home to Bel-Air

I pulled up to a house about seven or eight
and I yelled to the cabby "Yo, home smell you later"
looked at my kingdom I was finally there
to settle my throne as the prince of Bel-Air

yeah i suppose ill forget all about LC results as soon as i start, but all this hanging around...what else have i got to think about?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 461 ✭✭sleepingbeauty

saw the fresh prince episode when carlton dances to tom jones today lol....that programme is classic
(dont have the patience to sit there and cram stuff i dont understand).
i didnt have the patience to learn off stuff i didnt like, take irish for example.. all those damn poems and stories, im soo glad to be in college now :)

Pass Irish heh, I really lacked any willpower what-so-ever to learn anything for that. I think I managed 10 lines total on paper 2

Lol same as me. I still don't know how I passed. I didn't do the oral and hardly did anything on paper two. Ten lines seems about right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

...I had a race during paper2 :D 15 minutes to answer all questions then run out and go for a pint :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

For my leaving I did paper 2 in half an hour (pass of course) and spent the day studying what was tipped for home ec that afternoon. I ended up getting a B3 from that little bit of study. And I passed Irish. But the LC was a joke
