His official site is saying that he has cancelled his 11 remaining festival dates as he has been advised to do so by his doctor.
Great. This was the only reason I was going:( :(

I'd say (oooh - look, we've the same icon thingy!) that they'll nearly have to offer some class of a refund. While tickets weren't sold as 'David Bowie Live', he was the main draw, and no amount of 'the promoter reserves the right to change the line-up' clauses should allow that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 863 ✭✭✭corm500

Yeah that sunday was so top heavy.Bowie was basically the only reason most of my mates were going. The organizers have a week and a half to find a replacement. It will not do this year to just shove someone up from one of the other stages.

I doubt there'll be any refunds - so does anybody know if The Shins are any good?

Maybe they might get somebody decent to headline Sunday and I might stay after all. In this day Bowie as a headliner - joke

I'm pretty disappointed about this myself. Hopefully there will be a decent replacement.

I seriously doubt it at this late stage, the gig is ten days away and all the big acts are probably long booked up for Summer. Most likely Muse will headline - although i've a feeling they won't be coming either, Dom must be absolutely devastated about what happened on Sunday :(

How dare you Sir! Bowie is a LEGEND! He's still putting out great records and he sells out every gig he plays.

i just think Bowie is a good act but as a headliner no way in my opinion

What, you think Muse and/or The Darkness should have headlined? No way! In fact, if they'd been offered they'd probably have refused. He's the biggest act at the festival, that's why he's headlining.

  • Subscribers Posts: 3,703 ✭✭✭TCP/IP

I would not pay to see the darkness i think they are sh1t and Muse are good but I agree with you they are certainly not headliners

Then WHAT do you count as a headliner. Seems Bowie doesn't cut the mustard for you, and you're not a big fan of The Darkness or Muse.

The normal job of the "headliner" (with the possible exception of Radiohead) is to basically trot out as last act of the evening, blast out their greatest hits, let the crowd sing along, get happy and then bog off home. It's not rocket science.

So - let's apply this to bowie

Greatest hits available - Check. Bucketloads
    Sing-along factor - Oh Aye
Crowd get happy - Mais Certainment.

He may not be to your taste - and that's fine. But he is a good headliner, and with 10 days to go, MCD will be hard pushed find a replacement

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 847 ✭✭✭FinoBlad

ur entitled to your opinion, but the reality is bowie is huge.
Slane would have been better for him

Bowie is the very definition of headline material. Decades of hits, top quality new material, massive personality... I'm glad I got a chance to see him in the Point, otherwise i'd be a lot more annoyed about this.

The organisers will have to offer refunds for those holding Sunday tickets, it's only fair. It's concievable that they could just push The Darkness up the bill, maybe move Muse into The Darkness's old slot, or maybe even just before Ash. Still a fairly solid set of acts for the main stage, but nothing like having Bowie play.

    Ah crap. The Sunday curse.

They should try and book Placebo but I have a feeling Stereophonics will be shoved in. I'd say Morrissey will replace Bowie at T in the Park.

A friend of mine works for the Belfast Telegraph and she just rang the promoters and they said they haven't been told he's cancelled, that he's just cancelled Italian gigs.

    FINGERS CROSSED!

On Entertainment.ie they have removed him from the lineup on Sunday ...

    FECK!

Bowie was one of the main reasons I was going too :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 147 ✭✭froggie_1

this really is terrible for the organisers and us....
i mean a lot of people would have bought tickets on the strength of Bowie and I really think some sort of refund should be offered. People should have the option of full refund I think, even if some sort of replacement is located.

Personally it doesnt bother me all too much, but it is a HUGE blow for the festival.

Does anyone think a good replacement will be found....

Does anyone else think the Oxegen website is BRUTAL...?

Apart from being slow at times due to a heavy user load, and apart from not being updated quite often enough, - no, I think it's a pretty good site.

Of course they'll say that, they probably put it in fine print somewhere on the website!! They won't offcially announce it i'd say until they have there backup plan in place. The Darkness aren't big enough to headline. I can see a sh1tty rejig if the lineup, add in the some irish band or something. Maybe Badly Drawn Boy can be added? He filled in for Jet at Glasto.

by the way theres a poossibilty of Muse and The Libertines cancelling too, Sunday could be rightly fukcd up

maybe your right, i just think the Witnness site was a lot more fun and exciting...
used to love checkin it in the run up to the gigs. Its not updated half enough...
ah it'll still be a great festival, gonna go bananas anyway

No you're right, the site is sh1t and the content is worse. Witnness site was far superior

I know some people that would be delighted with that (no me) - They could be available, not exactly doing a hectic schedule, probably cost an arm and a leg though.

Somebody suggested Christy Moore on the Oxegen site - I'd settle for him on the 2nd stage and Muse (provided they make it) moved to the main stage

terrible news to hear that Bowie aint going to be there..it was the main reason I was only going on the sunday

Oasis as a replacement....nah!! they were pretty boring at witnness 2002

maybe we'll be lucky and get a replacement that hasn't played here before, like Coldplay, Counting crows, Fun lovin' criminals or maybe even RHCP!!:D

    p.s. I am taking the piss:p

Hmm. That's odd. You'd think they'd have gone with Muse after the absolute STORMER of a gig they played at Glastonbury. Not looking good then that Muse are going to show at all...

Tell me there will be a refund given?

Is it not the case that there is a question mark over Muse's gigs over the next couple of weeks.
The drummer's father had a heart attack at Glastonbury and died.
The band cancelled there next couple of gigs and I heard there is a question mark over them playing at Oxegen.....

am not sure about this though.....am only quoting what I have heard....

You can't really blame MCD for Bowie pulling out and with only 9 days to go its hard to see how they're going to get a replacement from anywhere.

Maybe i'm being naive, but i'm sure they'll be trying to get someone in between now and the friday, they're hardly going to sit on their hands and do nothing.

Its in their best interests to try to find a replacement, for the sake of the festivals' profile, and anyway Bowies fee was their money to start with.., if they didn't want to spend it they wouldn't have allocated it would they?

Hopefully the darkness headlining is only a stop gap measure until Pink Floyd are confirmed.

The Darkness are set to headline Sunday night at OXEGEN following David Bowie’s unfortunate withdrawal due to illness. David Bowie has been forced cancel his entire European Tour due to a trapped nerve in his shoulder sustained last week.

“We wish David Bowie well and hope he has a quick recovery. We are disappointed that he has had to withdraw but are looking forward to OXEGEN which features performances from the hottest international artists of today. Across the weekend fans will see performances from Muse who were the highlight of Glastonbury, The Cure, The Strokes, Pink, Black Eyed Peas, Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, Kings of Leon, Belle and Sebastian and many many more”. stated Justin Green, MCD.

In addition Razorlight who are set to top the UK charts this weekend have been confirmed to appear on Saturday night on the New Band Stage.

Already 95% of tickets for the event have been snapped up and it is expected that camping tickets will be sold-out within the next few days. A limited number of day and two day tickets are available.

Following confirmation that the OXEGEN campsite will open a day early on Friday 9 July from 12 noon, Dublin Bus have announced a special shuttle service to and from the site commencing Friday 1pm – 9pm, Saturday 11am – 5pm, Sunday 10am – 4pm. For more Dublin Bus information tel: 01 8734222.
From the Oxegen website - they acknowledge Muse's stormer at Glasto but still they give Darkness the nod:confused:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 863 ✭✭✭corm500

I am almost sure that every other festival that he was meant to play at will put on a replacement act . Roskilde managed to find a replacement with 3 days notice (admitedly Slipknot) so I can not see why they can not get someone with 10 days notice. The fact is they do not want to. The festival is 95% sold and mcd are sitting happy.Bowies appearance fee was probably the same as most of the sunday main stage bands put together. The main stage on sunday now only has 7 acts compared to the saturdays 9. They should offer refunds, its the least they can do.
