    Tipperary Small Pet Rescue Center

    http://homepage.eircom.net/~spr124/

The girl who runs this has a heart of gold and takes in and takes great care of alot of animals. She has rabbits, guinea pigs and gerbils that all need good homes. She also needs any spare pet accessories you might have. We dropped a guinea pig cage out to her the other day and she really does have her hands full.

Check out peata.org the organisation for pets and people

We visit hospitals hospices and homes with your pets. I am very luck to visit a day care centre for adults with my poodles where we have great fun playing ball with clients and staff

If you have a friendly loving pet and think you can spare the time to share them on a weekly visit, contact peata and get assessed. I have got a lot out of my visiting and the dogs love it too.

I have devoted this sticky purely to Dog & Cat information as more people in Ireland have pet dogs and / or cats than any other animal.
Feel free to post links here to any information or health related sites you have found usefull or helpfull.

Please do not post links to sites that are simply "dog sites" or "cat sites" here, try to be specific to the "Health information & Resources" title.

    • Please note: On any site listed below, please take all advise with "a pinch of salt".
    • Medical treatment should never be given to ANY animal by anyone other than a vet.
    • Neither Boards.ie nor its members take responsibility for any innacurate information in the links below.
    • Any animal that is exhibiting signs of illness or behavioural issues should be taken to a Vet as soon as possible.

    ======================================================================
The best Irish Cat site in my opinion, put together by real cat lovers, the entire site is amazingly informative.

Cat health & Care / treatment information.

    Kittern Adoption Website (main Page)

    Their NEW forum boards!

    ======================================================================

Another Cat information & behaviour link,...

    Cat Behaviour
*NB: I cannot fully vouch for this one yet as I am still reading it.
    ======================================================================

    Dog behaviour info link........

    Dog Behaviour and Information
*NB: Again I cannot fully vouch for this one yet as I am still reading it.

    Taken from www.kittenadoption.ie website:

    Some facts from Jan.
    • 300,000 kittens will be born in Ireland this year.
    • Two fifths will die within the first week of life.
    • A Third more will die before 4 months of age.
    • That is 180,000 kittens dying within 4 months of birth in Ireland this year alone.
    • Kittens are also being born to the estimated 23% of **pet** domestic cats that that are not spayed/neutered.
    • There are no wild cats native to Ireland therefore every kitten born and cat alive is descended from some body's un-neutered pet cat.
    • There are an estimated 700,000 former domestic (feral) cats in Ireland with over 200,000 in the Dublin area. This is using the tried and tested American system of calculation. Take the number of households in an area and multiply by 0.5 to give the number of cats.
    • One unspayed cat and her offspring can create 11.6 million other cats within 9 years.
    • An un altered cat (ex domestic stray) Has an average life span of 2 years. So these animals are born to die.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,132 ✭✭✭Sigma Force

Is there a reason other animals aren't mentioned, you would be suprised how many households have other animals as well as cats or dogs, it's just that they don't tend to mention them as much. There is a lot of information about cats and dog care (and having more on this site is brilliant of course) but there is far less helpful information for small animals, birds and fish.

Have to agree about the KA site, it's choc full of helpful info.

FranknFurter, if it would be useful I can write up care sheets for chinchillas/mice/various other small animals. As Guineapigrescue has mentioned, these pets are not as common as cats and dogs, but the information could still be of use to somebody :)

Guineapigrescue I'm sure could also assist on the rodent side ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,215 ✭✭✭FranknFurter

    T'would be great!
There is a sticky thread here for care sheets just waiting to be filled :)

There cannot be one rule for one person and a different one for another!

I have no problem with people telling other people about their businesses here.

No favoritism at all! I was reluctant to edit the post as I was not a moderator when the post was put up, but due to a query as to why that post was allowed I have deleted the post content.

Just to clarify there is to be NO advertising of your own sites/shops in this thread!

I'm moving to Waterford so was looking for a pet shop down there to buy some things for my pup and my friends also. Pets r Vets in Waterford City are brilliant - have bearded dragons and more animals. big range actually. here's their site www.petsrvets.ie/ It is only being set up at the moment but their contact info and address is on it.

I picked up my pup on Wednesday evening and while she has been given a full vets check and is fit as a fiddle I'd still like to have my own vet lined up near me (just in case). Could anyone recommend a good vet and dog groomer around D15?

I left my dogs into The Irish Rosettes boarding kennel(in Lusk near the airport) last week when I was away on holidays and I can highly recommend them. This is the first time my dogs didn't get sick after being in a boarding kennel. My dogs had actually put on a little bit of weight, which would be quite unusual considering a lot of dogs get stressed and wouldn't eat as much when being left in a strange place. And they didn't smell horrible after leaving the kennel, which they normally would:D They also have an enclosed exercise area which my dogs loved.

Not D15 but close enough....I had my dog groomed by Claire Fitsimons for years and was very happy with them, they now have their own parlour at 80 Annamoe Road, Cabra... I think they might be full but it's worth a try.

That's great Texas thanks. I brought my pup to Hillcrest Veterinary Hospital for her booster shots. They are opposite the Coolmine Industrial Estate, and really nice in there. I'd recommend them to anyone in the area.

I'd like to recommend The Reptile Haven in Fishamble street, I got 9 of my thirteen snakes there (I got two of my other snakes in the petshop in Galway on Shop street and I bred the other two myself). They're very kindly incubating two batches of corn snake eggs for me ATM

Apparently, Ben was the first person to bred bearded dragons in the republic.

Whenever I go in, there's always something beautiful or cute that I'd like to buy be it gorgeous baby iguanas (have one already and don't have the space for more) or a lovely chameleon who takes crickets from your hand (don't have the expertise)

Another good shop for reptiles is Boardwalk Pets on the quays.

    Hi all,
I thought you may be interested in www.findapetsitter.net. It's a website that I have created to allow pet sitters to create a profile, and owners to find them based on location. Owners can then contact you and go from there.
The website is brand new so there are some inperfections, but feel free to give any feedback.

    Thanks,
    Maria

    Hi,

Anicare Blanchardstown Veterinary Hospital in D15 is very handy, just off the main road opposite Ryan's Garage is a great veterinary practice.
