Unfortunately when you're a woman that's just where fat gets stored. I was a steady size 10 until I was 22, then it just went downhill. My diet didn't change, if anything I was more active, but it seems that's just the way it is.

I can't think of anything that specifically targets the hips, so just be sensible and leave the chocolate alone.

I'm not being nasty, but 14 stone on a 5'9" girl is really quite over weight (speaking as a girl who is that height and weighed nearly 13 stone till recently).
Going on a diet will help, as will drinking loads of water. But it's hard for woman to shift fat from their hips as this is just a place where it's naturally stored.

    She's right, you're overweight.

You need to loose overall bodyfat. Maybe take up a cardio activity for 30 - 45 minutes 3 times a week and watch diet.

Without proper diet, training is useless.

finally a topic. all us women want to discuss, puttin on weight is a **** reality we have to face, i dont think you are overweight trilo, and i am also really glad that some men find curves and a bit of extra flesh nice on women as sometimes(especially after havin a baby, even if it was 2 years ago) your body just fills out, so i know what its like, ive been 6.5 stone( bodybiluder) and 11 stone(9 months pregnant) and i am just 5,2 so you can imagine my poor body, years of yo-yo dieting, years of abuse with slimming drugs, ( yes i had a nice body, plenty of ab muscles and no cellulite ) but it came at a huge cost ( didnt have a period for over a year at that stage) after my baby ( which was 3 years after my yo-yo dieting and bulimia problem , my body has settled at just over 10 stone and it really effects my self esteem and stuff and causes me huge personal pride problems, my guy has admitted that he much prefers me thinner and i worry a lot about that but i want to do it right and healthy , no crash diets, no binging, no guilt, no major hangups, so anyway now i am babbling but you get the picture, its hard for all us girlies . the hips especially but just cut the junk and do the walking and maybe gym, that s what i will be at anyway and then maybe i can start to feel better about myself again;)

some of those replies were a bit blunt (if well-meaning). I lost a few stone this year(I'm still overweight so I'm no sensei BTW).
Here are some things that will hopefully be of use to you should you decide to go on a diet/exercise thing...

    - get measured before starting.. This is hugely important and will encourage you to keep going later on. Because of your dislike for your hips you will find it hard to see any progress you've made for a while; you'll just see big hips full stop. By measuring once a month you will be able to see how you've progressed on paper. You can do this yourself so it doesn't cost anything. do your upper arms, stomach, arse and thighs. And don't forget to write it all down.

    - if you have a boyfriend then you should make him go toe-to-toe with you on this diet. If he refuses on grounds like "You're the one needs to lose the weight not me" don't go mad, but persuade him by telling him his support is very important to your succeeding. Make him feel guilty, that his bad habits are part of the problem ;)

    - start right now - xmas is coming you'll only put it off till Jan otherwise.

    - I'm sure you know all the good/bad foods already but you can pm me if you want info on this

=> and yes loads of men perfer curvy women, me and about half my mates included.

    Best of luck
    Neil

At 5'9" and 14 stone she's overweight. There's no point hiding from the truth. If she wants to to anything about her weight, first thing she must do is admit she has a weight problem. Being overweight is nothing to be ashamed of. And it's not as if she's morbidly obese or anything.

Some men prefer curves, some men prefer thinner women. Most men probably aren't that fussy anyway. If a woman isn't very over or underweight then she's probably grand.

And rememeber that it's not just women who are insecure about their bodies. Witness the amount of guys who work their asses off down the gym trying to build muscle and/or lose weight. This can become a total obesssion for some guys - I've heard this called the "Adonis Complex" No matter how muscular they get they're never happy with how they look and think that women won't be attracted to them. Of course, we never hear about this in the media. All we hear in the media is about poor women being under pressure to be slim and being driven to anorexia etc. etc.

Very true, the adonis complex a.k.a bigorexia a.k.a body dysmorphia.

I know a few people that have all the symptoms, myself included.

Did you notice this forum is about fitness? There's nothing fit about being three stone overweight! You're entitled to your opinion but this forum isn't the place. Fair enough if you like overweight women but I personally find obesity a bit disgusting and before you have a go at me, I was over 2 stone overweight until recently so I know what i'm talking about....

Trilo - I notice from a post of yours that you're on anti-depressants. Some of them can cause weight gain. I'd try and come off them if I were you, or at least switch to one without this side effect. If you are exercising and eating healthily but are unable to shift the extra weight, this could be the culprit...

That realy was not a well taught out statement and to be honest you are a muppet for stating that opinion on these boards!

Are you for a minute suggesting that you once being 2 stone overweight gives you the right to pass judgment on everyone else overweight?

Well yeah it does give him more of a right to comment. As an ex-fatty he knows that it is possible to lose the weight, and that all it takes is will power(yes people thats all).

I'm a she. And I have a right to my opinion either way tbh. This is really going off topic.
I hope the OP comes back here, would be interesting to know if the anti-d's are causing a problem with losing weight.

Yes i'm a she, i've always been a she and i've never tried to be ambiguous about that. Most of the regulars on boards know i'm female. Not my problem if you ASSUME.
Even if I was a guy, i'd still be entitled to voice the opinion that I find obesity unattractive, especially if i'd been overweight myself.

Now can we get back on topic, please?

The fact that all you internet nerd virgins find fat women attractive is irrelevant.

By the sounds of things ye spend most of yer life trying to pick up women through the internet anyway.

The fact of the matter is the original poster is overweight and wants to do something about it.

All the fawning and ego stroking is fine but this isn't "personal issues" this is fitness so unless ye can give the original poster advice on how to loose weight, try to resist the obviously enourmous temptation to post.

Well I'm heading away for a month to the Caribbean so I won't really be posting much obviously.

However there were a couple of points made on this thread that deserve restating.

    This is not personal issues.

If you want to other people to make you feel better about yourself (not suggesting the original poster did), post there.

If you want to make yourself feel better about yourself - then take advice here and take some action. There are no secrets, if you are overweight, and at 14 stone 5 9' you are, then your answer is simply establishing a good cardio routine and taking a decision to stick at it. Your body will gradually take fat from these areas, tho genetically, Irish women are somewhat predisposed to holding weight in that area, so be patient.

    A couple of things:

1: Throw your bathroom scales out the window. Weight is not the real issue here. There is a fat lot of good losing say 26lbs but having lost more muscle than fat.

2: Embrace weight training. Train hard and train like a man. Aim to gain as much muscle as you can. As a woman with low levels of testosterone gaining muscle is hard. It's hard for a man but it's even harder for women. If you set the bar high falling short ain't so bad.

3: Increase your protein intake to 1gram per lb of bodyweight per day.

4: Start by doing 5 x 45mins cardio sessions per week. Don't kill yourself but don't be soft either! Include a minimum of three weights sessions per week and a maximum of four.

5: Measure your progress by how you look naked in front of the same mirror and under the same light. Bottom line the mirror will never lie.

6: Bear in mind some 'slim' girls are actually what is termed skinny fat and can be in bad shape. You must look to get lean and muscular like a female sprinter.

Have you any idea what your waist size is? What about your hips? At your weight of 196lbs and 5ft9 your bodyfat is presumably quite high and needs reduction.

As for the adonis complex, there is nothing vain about wanting to be in great shape. What is wrong with being big and muscular? Maybe people do not like people in great shape as it brings home to them that they are in poor shape both from a cardiovascular and muscular perspective.

You've misunderstood the term Adonis Complex. Jealousy has nothing to do with it. And it's not about being in great shape. It's about being in great shape AND being unhappy with how you look AND having an obsessive, never-ending desire to get bigger. As logic1 pointed out, another term for this is bigorexia. I think this is quite a descriptive term. BTW I'm not being critical of people like this, in fact I'm probably slightly bigorexic myself. I've always felt too skinny to attract women. I think I'm right because women *definitely* like muscular guys. It's annoying when women claim that they don't really care about a guy's looks/body and that personality etc. is what's important. BULLSH*T.

    Brian,

The adonis complex is all BS IMO. It's a nice title and grabs a few popcorn headlines. I've known about it for nearly three years now.

As for guys in great shape or big in the gyms of ireland there are very few and those in great shape work too hard towards specific goals be they powerlifting or bodybuilding to fall into the bigorexia category. Some 150lb guy looking to get buff for the chicks and fill out his size small ben sherman t-shirt may have it but not the truly dedicated larger athletes found in gyms.

Jealousy is key to the adonis complex. You are jealous of the bigger guy, you want to be bigger you develop bigorexia. You are the size you are and laugh at the guys trying to get bigger, secretly you may be jealous but you buy the book as it classes those who look to get bigger and people with a problem, with bigorexia. Seriously if there was no envy, jealousy the book would not have a market.

Women love a posterboy, what they want is a guy with a six pack but they don't want him to have to workout to stay in shape as this means time away from them. I've known blokes who wives/gf's did not know they trained or took steroids, when down the gym their ladies thought they were working overtime!

Anyway I gotta go to the gym and work on my adonis reflection. Problem with getting bigger is your 3pce stays the same size so will look proportionately smaller. For example what a horse has will look huge on a donkey but what a donkey has would look decidedly silly on a horse. Those spam pills don't work!:D

LOL, very true. Most women are pretty clueless when it comes to weight training. They don't realise that getting in great shape requires a lot of hard work and dedication. These are the same women that are afraid to do any form of weight training themselves for fear of getting too big - they probably think that by lifting a 5 kg dumbell for 10 reps they'll end up with arms like arnie :)

:) Right okay, i have decided to fill you in on my developments. i went to the doctor today and was weighed at 13 stone 2. brilliant, but i wonder how could i have lost all that. i'm walking a lot more and definitely feel im losing it on my tighs, feels so good. just need the hips to go now... not that their really really bad, just need the exercise and less of the chocolate... oh chocolate... i managed to eat half a box of celebrations the other night.... felt so sick afterwards... (well we're all allowed a little treat sometimes).

my gym work is going grand though i havent been going the last 2 weeks, but tommorrow i will proceed with what i started .. an hour in the gym, jogging and some weight tingies.

    so wish me luck.

i'm a a guy, same height as you (actually only 5'8, so am repulsive to all women any way, as i am short) and i'm 12stone - a stone lighter than you.

i am broad in the chest, shoulders and arms have a small bit of a gut, not much though:D and quite muscular legs. anyway my point is that weight means squat, its what that weight is comprised of (eg: fat of muscle or bone etc). if your happy, thats all that counts.

*** You want my advice? Cut the girly talk regarding weights. They are not weight tingies! People who think like this just go through the motions and get nowhere slowly. You must as was stated previously embrace weight training and learn what works what and why you are doing this exercise. Oh and don't bother using machines use free weights. Train like a man!

As for cardio - jogging is for you and most people about the worst you can do, too much pressure on the joints both back and knees. I would suggest cycling instead.

Lose the chocolates period (don't do a jeannie sac on it and keep a secret stash), move over to low fat fruit salads minus cream or loads of yoghurt. Drink loads and loads and loads of water like 9-10 pints a day.

    Remember this:

Looking great and having a fabulous body feels so much better than feeling full! Make your choice!

Now if you were training for the ox-cam boat race you could eat whatever you want and have no fear of gaining any weight!

A bit too much water to be honest for someone who isn't doing hardcore training. You can drink too much water.
    Lose the chocolates period

Defintely agree here though. This girlish obession is a load of bull. Just girls conforming to the sterotype, a sterotype that they will then b*tch and moan about being labeled as.
Now if you were training for the ox-cam boat race you could eat whatever you want and have no fear of gaining any weight!

One of the best bits of trainig, eating those few more carbs and being able to justify it! :) Can't wait to do Ironman training in a year or two :)

Look, i'm not trying to offend you, but trust me, 14 stone is too heavy for someone who's 5' 9". 13 stone is about 80kg, and if you're 5' 9" then you should weigh between 58 - 72. You might not look fat and flabby, fair enough, but it's unhealthy to be overweight. I'm sure the fitness experts on the board here will back me up.

As for how you lost a stone without realising, it is possible that your bathroom scales aren't as accurate as they should be. In fact, most common household scales aren't very accurate. Actually, did you ask your doctor if your anti depressants can cause weight gain?

tbh I don't think you're taking this very seriously. skipping the gym for 2 weeks....eating a half box of celebrations...yes, everyone is allowed a treat, but that's a bit excessive if you're serious about losing weight.

And one last thing, it's best to separate cardio sessions from weight training sessions.

Hey trilo, damn the begrudgers - go do your exercise. Take any form of cardio you can (sex too, honestly). Some weights on top of some running/cycling and you'll have it off no problem. Lose it steadily though, no crash diet bs. Join a gym and do the spin class.

And don't forget to take a break - come join us for the xmas beers :)

We are not being begruders. Coming onto the fitness board, stating that yuo are way overweight and want to get fit and then telling us all how yuo're doing nothing and eating entire boxes of chocolate doesn't really win us over. FFS alot of people here will exercise for 3+ hours a day and not even eat a single choclate bar that often.

The girl is 2-3 stone overweight and won't accept this. She comes on here saying she's serious about losing weight, then tells us she couldn't be arsed going to the gym for 2 weeks and ate half a box of chocolate in one night!

TBH that's just taking the piss and she should be lucky anyone is still giving her advice....
