Flash Mobs

Heres an interesting idea to mess with peoples heads:

    Flash Mobs

Groups of people meet at locations for a brief few minutes and cause a scene and then just dissolve away. Its kind of like performance art.

    Another use for boards people.

    me like.
Maybe if one person started speaking in tongues and then everybody else started chanting "Hail Azuria. Hail Azuria" in Stephen's Green for 5 minutes and then left.

Cos that would scare the poo out of me.

That seems so class, it would be pretty easy to organise one for cork since we have Peoplesrepublicofcork.com an all. Anyone care to organise one?

Might be fun to do alright. D-Generate, start a thread in the South Forum for a local flash mob. :)

Three members of online community Boards.ie were arrested in Cork yesterday evening when they tried to arrange a new phenomenon known as a "flash mob" outside the Capitol Cineplex cinema. The term "flash mob" originated from meetings of activists and performance artists hastily arranged over the Internet and mobile phones, however the Cork trio appear to have misunderstood the term and arrived on the scene wearing black leather trenchcoats, sunglasses and little else. A minor panic ensued when the "Boardsters" - calling themselves Neo, Tank and Morpheus after characters in cult movie series "The Matrix" - formed a tight circle and exposed themselves to passers-by. The Boardster calling himself Tank, seemingly disoriented by the entire episode, also screamed "Beam me up Scotty" repeatedly at the audience, who by now had settled down to enjoy the performance and were heard to be muttering words like "weiner" and "haemaphrodite". The Gardaí arrived shortly afterwards and removed the miscreants from the scene.

Definitely do it, Set up a thread with time and date, meet in Stephen's green, But make sure we all do something that is legal, something that the cops couldn't sting you on, like diturbing the peace.

    Im up for it

maybe get a few ideas and do a poll on the best one. Do a multiple choice poll with different times and dates to see how many people actually want to do it at any time. have to be something people will actually do when it comes to it. The chanting part of my idea would be ok for instance but is there anyone who's going to pretend to have a religious fit in front of loads of people? Would work with just the chanting otherwise.

LOL that was brilliant dahamsta, when I first saw the words Flash Mob I thought it was a group of flashers aswell, easy mistake..... Are they illegal or what? I mean Flash Mos not Flasher Mobs :)

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 16,659 ✭✭✭✭dahamsta

I got a bit confused, because I wanted to fit the line "matters were delayed for another moment while Neo went for a slash", but it wouldn't fit. So to speak.

Anyway, I think it depends on the number, I think that if you reach a certain number it would be defined as a "gathering" or somesuch, and would have to be "licenced" by the Gardaí. Yellum, you're a treehugger troublemaker, you should know this stuff...?

    {btw, i would be /so/ on for something like this. two instances in fact, one performance, one activist}

Treehugger ? I'm a tree burner. Look at my work history. :)

    I'll look into it.

Neo V the smiths in eyre square in Galway.

get 100 lads who are the same size get some make-up to make them all the same but also that ya need them to learn the fights. and u need them to hide somewhere. In the moive neo fights only a few smiths but more and more come running out buildings to fight him to pull this off u need trucks in other parts in eyre square full smiths.

If we did something like that I'm joining in. It be so cool if that happened.

There is only one real choice.

Eircom HQ. Fake death if anyone inside looks out. Big enough crowd that would be funny :)

I'm just thinking. Do something like the Radiohead video "Just".

Everyone just gather outside and then all fall down and lie there for a few minutes and move on.

We'll need people with digital and video cameras to record this "performance"

Have no purpose advertised for the event. No placards and no comments from those taking part.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭the fnj

If everyone formed a giant conga line in St. Stephen's Green and ran all the way down Grafton St. I'm sure lots of other people would join the line for the craic.

When I first read this I also though something similar to Just were everyone falls down would be funny. You would need cameras, preferably hidden, to video peoples reaction.

Everyone just gather outside and then all fall down and lie there for a few minutes and move on.

I saw a bunch of lads do that one day on Oliver Plunkett Street. They were obviously on a session, about a dozen of them, and all at once the lot of them collapsed in a big heap outside the Bodhrán. Just for a couple of seconds, then they all got up again and when on their merry way. Very funny moment.

I like Dusty's idea. I can just see a load of Boardsters mugging horrific deaths every time someone looked out. Clutching hearts and throats, hands raised clawlike... :)

I like that congo idea, or else people all collapseing and lie down at the entrance to some building, all over the steps, it would look class.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 272 ✭✭jammy_dodger

These are all good ideas, but is anyone gonna organize this thing, also whats boards.ie mods opinion, if it got back to the media could it cause boards.ie any damage?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 989 ✭✭✭MrNuked

might be good publicity. Don;t think it would cause damage unless we organised something antisocial.

Think the Radiohead video idea is good but that most people who saw it would just think "oh they're doing that thing from the Radiohead video." Something more originalwould be better I think.

or else any americans around might think it's a biological weapon attack.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,761 ✭✭✭✭Winters

I like the sounds of this Flash Mob stuff.. lotf os fun could be had.

The best is to follow Dustaz and yellum's plan but make some slight changes.

At the exact same time on the same day outside the Eircom offices in Galway, Cork and Dublin a mod gather and then fall down [while being filmed] and after a few min run away.

Though the most important thing is to have it happen in all 3 cities at the ame time outside the eircom buildings... would be best then :)

Those that saw the Radiohead vid are in the minority not the majority.

And a flash mob is original. It borrows from other things but the idea of doing this is original enough.

OK so will someone pull the finger out and organise it, maybe some1 who has been around for a while and has lots of emails to sort it out.

Also maybe having someone in a good vantage point with a video camera could be a good plan aswell

    Anyone know the details?
this from todays (08/08/03) breaking news on Unison

A bizarre craze which has been sweeping the United States and Europe for several months is expected to hit Dublin in the coming days. "Flash mobs" have been springing up in cities on both continents this summer and one is planned for Dublin this weekend. The phenomenon involves organised gangs of people gathering quickly in the same place, engaging in some bizarre act and then dispersing within a couple of minutes. In Rome, hundreds of people recently turned up a music store, demanded non-existent CDs, broke into spontaneous applause and then disappeared. A crowd of 200 people also gathered at a London furniture store recently and started praising the sofas. The craze started in the United States, where last night, a "flash mob" descended on a Toys R Us store in New York to worship a huge model dinosaur. The mobs are organised over the Internet and with mobile phones.

I have to say, I like the idea of flash mobs when they're used to make a political or social statement, but it seems to be going further and further down the road of "a bunch of twits acting like twits". Perhaps I'm just getting old.

It wasn't 200, it was about 50-60 people. I have to say it was a great laugh. The reactions of the staff and the few genuine shoppers as the shop filled within a minute was simply priceless.
