Is there any poker clubs/societies in Dublin that have regular poker nights/competitions?

You'd wanna be fairly flush with cash for some of these places and from what ive heard they seem to be a haven for card sharks aswell, so i think your better off running regular card nights with yer mates and that way it stays friendly, ya have a few beers and ya might even win a few quid..

I know a guy that did this, he splashed out on a proper card table, chips and the works, then organised it with a few buddies. They would have a card night once a month at the start of every month, around payday...

You went along, brought some beer, bought your chips and played away.. usually took a break for ordered in food after a few hours and carried on playing till the wee hours.. at the end of the night you cashed in your chips (if you had any left) and everyone went home happy..

I was at a few of them and they were a good laugh...

most of the clubs have tournaments-probably a 15 euro or so buy in on a sunday night.

    www.poker.ie

Tournaments will be played in Bray Sailing Club, 2 minutes from Bray DART station.

My dad is a member of the sailing club, and we've had charity poker nights there, pay a fee on the door, get some chips/monopoly money, play some poker, get some dinner,
and best of all there's a members bar in the sailing club, very reasonably priced.
Dunno if it'll be open for the poker.ie crowd, if it is though then the poker night would be great fun.

email lists are on the website

I think I'm definitely gonna join up.

My mates and I have been playing since college regularly. We have the green baize and proper poker chips too and we're all reasonably experienced players at this stage I guess...
the swing for a given player in a night would be in the region of 100 euro.

I play in the Sugar Club too which is a savagely brilliant place altogether... though cocktails and blackjack are a bad combo. Its only a small (3 table) club but its a great atmosphere and the croupiers are professional and friendly... very newbie friendly place actually as they explain the rules and you can play for as little as 1 euro a hand iirc.

They only need 42 people to run a night...I wonder if we could get a closed night for Boards people.... I bet we could round up 42 people to play poker!

I got a poker group too...proper chips n all. So that'd be about 6 people to throw into the Boards.ie Poker Classic

I play it online regualily on www.ladbrokespoker.com They changed the software recently, not to my liking, but its good.

I got some professional poker chips when I was in vegas last year - myself and a few mates play about once or twice a month but nothing too high stake.

I would be very interested - and i'm sure my mates would be also - to join up to a boards.ie poker night.

    btw - texas holdem' rocks

I've sent one of the lads behind poker.ie a mail to point him at this thread. Would be nice to be able to chat directly with them rather then speculate.

According to their website they have room for around 40 punters in their tournament on July 8th, I think so far this thread could almost fill about 20 or more of those spaces

I wonder how big they want to make it?
It'd be fun to compete in a 100 person tournament, big prizes and all that.

aye, it might be fun to turn up to their night in July. (Date: 8th July 2003)

I'd prefer to get a night *just* for Boards.ie so that

    a. We all kinda know the history/culture and can have a laugh and a chat even if you are knocked out early.

    b. You've a reasonable idea that you arent pissing your money into the wind against semi-pro players (not that I think 300 euro top prize would attract many serious players :)

You'd be surprised-I used to live with a pro poker player (came fourteenth in world ) and if teir tyank was low they'd try and hoover money in the small tournaments off the amateurs.

The last one I was at was great fun I got knocked out fairly early but them moved to playing for (fairly small amounts of) cash. There's nothing quite like a good game of poker.

Lafor I'll try and pop along again if I can get out of work that day, a general boards poker session sounds like a winner I'd certainly be up for it.

After leaving my credit card with my girlfriend.

I'm trying to get my cousin to go as well as a few others, have sent the poker.ie guy a mail to find out more,

It'll be sweet if the bar is open too, but I'm not sure if it will be seeing as its not a Sailing Club function,

The way to approach this is to have a 20euro buy in for chips, and allow 2 further buy ins if you lose all in. That way no one gets too hurt...
Winner/runner ups get a proportion of the takings.
if you allow multiple buy ins (above 3 say) , your stack is too small and you can get anted away/put all in as the pool of people decreases and antes increase (as their stack would be much bigger)

I think a boards poker night would be a lot better - mixing wiht our own, getting to know people and probably a more fun and less strictly competitive atmosphere. And we could put our own cash cap on it n' stuff

    Just my 2 chips :)

Does anyone know anywhere in town or online that you can buy a set of poker ships?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

    Chips I presume DapperGent?

Yes, you can get them in that wee shop that sells odds and ends for the house behind the Carphone Warehouse in Liffey Valley. I cant remember the name, but you can get full poker sets there.

They also sell Lantz wedding stationary, thats all I remember!

Yes, Texas Hold'em is the ideal game for us, everyone chips in 20 or 50 euro entry, 10 per table, winner gets the pool.

All we need is the cameras under the table, Late Night Poker style

    Cash me in! :D

When I worked on Baggot St.

Paddy Flaherty's on haddington Rd. used to run the occassional poker tournament upstairs for the locals.

Now I have no idea about the suitability of the venue. as I haven't been there in about 2 years....no green baize....but they had chips!

they are in a nice case,

If people are interested in a few games let me know,

I have 400 chips I got in vegas last year. So if we pool together we would have enough for 8 - 10 if needed.

I'd be up for a poker night alright, would be good craic.
However, being a complete novice, I imagine I'd lose my shirt.

Hyzepher mentioned Texas hold-em, I think it would be best to stick to 5 card draw though. Keep it simple.

Note to self: must rent out Rounders again.

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

See the way I look at it is this:
We could kinda run the night ourselves and all but why not let the pro's sort it all out and we turn up and play.

42 people x25 is 1050 of which 550 comes back out in prize money. Now since the lads must have 7 dealers working that night thats about 80 notes each for an evenings work... seems reasonable.

To get at *least* your cash back you only have to win your table (therefore getting into the final).

You can merge tables as the night moves on-it may speed things up
eg if you start with 7 tables of 6 ,then 4 of 6 etc
final table are in the money

The game they play on Late Night Poker would be the easiest to play and also the most fun.
I'd be up for this too. Not that I'm any good, but if it's done properly it's good fun.

I think this is the way to go for our first outing - put the organisational pressure on someone else until we see how many regulars we can get.

Now all that is left is to sign up at poker.ie and see how many we can get for the next night.

If you are interested sign up at www.poker.ie

Just went to the site to sign up but it isn't that straight forward. There is no online registration and the printable form doesn't give you an address to sent it to.

I emailled the guy in charge - Con Ward - and asked him to come back to boards.ie and answer any questions we might have.

Good man DMC. Cheers. Now to go all the way to LIffey Valley.

    Ugh.

DeVore, I dunno I reckon that gathering 42 interesteds wouldn't be too hard, but getting 42 to agree on a night and actually turn up cash in hand might be a bit tougher.

Hats off if you manage it. I'll be there.:)

    Hello,
this is Cormac from poker.ie. I am glad to see the interest in poker tournaments in Ireland. I notice you talk of organising your own tournaments. This will be no doubt more costly than attending poker.ie tournaments, chips, cards and most of all a venue! poker.ie offers a fair game for everyone. The first tournament will be held in Bray, located close to the dart line for easy access. There will also be a bar open on the night. If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask, I will respond to them as often as possible.
    Regards,
    Cormac O'Sheehan

Hi, welcome to Boards. I'm resident caretaker round here.

What we're looking to do is to organise a night for Boards people (theres a lot of us as you can see :) ).

We'll pay the same as you usually charge for the same prizes etc, its just that we are kinda tribal and wont to have a closed night for ourselves (though I am giving serious thought to popping along to your night anyway!). Some people here would feel a bit dubious about just turning up and playing with the poker sharks you might have as regulars.

So, if you guys want to team up with us and get a separate night for Boardsters we can bring the people.
    Give it some thought anyway...

Can I ask you one thing? Do you have dealers or is each person expected to deal at each table?

    DeV.
