Currently a lot of Americans are opposed to the war. If Iran do the right thing with a POW then it will be harder for Trump to make them look bad.
However, if Iran were to execute the pilot, it would reduce them to the level of the Americans in terms of war crimes and it would also unite Americans against Iran.
