Fair enough I can understand where you're coming from but sending search and rescue to look for a dolphin in the ocean seems a little ott, I think we can assume if he doesn't come back hes either dead or moved house,he may be part of the dingle community but hes still a wild animal not owned by anyone

Yeah, very true. If he has decided to head out to deeper waters, so be it.

Given the part he has played in the history of Dingle I see no harm in searching for him though, as long as it’s not taking resources from elsewhere.

I fully agree, I hope hes ok, he could be gone south to warmer waters for the winter :D

100% This is like a safari loosing a lion. All efforts will be made by vested interested and concerned parties to see what happened to Fungie. If the animal has passed it's a sad time for the country at a bad time.

It makes no sense that he'd suddenly take off after being there for 30/ 40 odd years. Maybe he died of old age.

''Fungie has just gone off on an adventure"

Gone to live on a farm?

It has that vibe about it alright. They called it off very suddenly too

It said thanks to mallow search and rescue, I assume their equipment isn't free to maintain and run

Yes but they're a charity and they're not a government agency.

Either way, it's just some fuel costs. Not exactly extravagant.

I don't understand why you'd even worry about it.

I don't get why they are out searching for him... he isn't a fisherman on a life raft, he is a dolphin. If he is not dead, surely he will swim back in a few days.

It made no sense that he came in to the bay and stayed either.

Apparently he didn't like other dolphins. Maybe he decided he liked humans. Humans brought him food too so maybe that's another reason he hung around.

Humans didn't bring him food you eejit, he stayed in the bay because its full of fish and he had the whole "crop" to himself.

He's not a caged animal in a zoo......

I suppose people are fond of him. He's a big deal for local business people too. You can see why they'd be worried.

How do you know people didn't being him food. Isn't that how they get dolphins and whales to follow boats.

People can now "feed" whales with tonnes of plankton. Is this a joke?

Eh they eat things other than plankton....
I suppose you've never watched wildlife programmes when they throw fish in to the water to whales/dolphins/sharks?
The clue is, they actually do it to get the animal to follow the boat... Of course dolphins only eat plankton so what do those people know..

I'm not the one who claimed they only ate plankton. I'm sure they eat a load of stuff if it gets handed to them.

You're right. I should watch more nature programs.

Enlighten me. What do people throw in the water to attract minke, fin & humpback whales that I've seen in the South West and the East coast of Ireland?

I'd imagine the whales in the South West and East coast of Ireland are just as partial to fish as whales in other regions of the world are. Why don't you take a little holiday for yourself and do a bit of research, then you can come back and let us all know.

Humans were not allowed to feed him. You got that lecture on every boat trip.

The bay was a natural bottleneck for some young fish migration, so lots of them swam in there regularly and Fungi got plenty of easy pickings. He did seem interested in the boat the one time I was out on one.

Fair enough, I didn't know that. It's a shame he's gone, whatever happened him. He sounds like a cool dolphin.

Yes, he's only been there for 37 years so it would be difficult for experts to make call.

He was huge. Neighbor told me of being on a small sailboat in the bay a few decades back when Fungie decided to take a look. Said it was pretty disconcerting this huge dolphin came along to check you out.

My theory is he's dead, just left the bay because so many times, animals when they're feeling in great pain/discomfort run off and hide, same thing here. Hopefully not the case and he returns, but it's 2020, the year of bad sh1te happening.

    Murder on the sea floor

That may be more a case for Fungie Ellis-bextor.

It's not looking good is it... For Dingle I mean

Has anyone actually taken one of the boat trips out to see him?
did it a few years back and it was honestly one of the most surreal things I ever did, there were 3 or 4 boats with tourists on them, and then one smaller boat with a lad hanging off the back, doing fast turns and splashing the water in an attempt to get the dolphins attention, but it felt more like he was being corralled. Both myself an they wife both felt a bit uncomfortable about the whole thing afterwards, it felt a bit more like we were harassing the dolphin rather than observing him.

Animals die. It was going to happen sometime.

Dingle was a tourist town before the dolphin and will be so afterwards.

The dolphin genuinely likes (liked) human company, I canoed there and he swam around me, jumped beside me and followed me for ages.

Was in a rib doing a run in and out of dingle.
Dolphin followed us and left the tourist boats circling aimlessly at nothing.
Twas a bit circus like tbh.
