    [Xbox One]

Lara Croft And The Temple of Osiris

Really good game started it a few months ago and left it. Decided to go back at it earlier today and I'm glad I did as I played it most of the afternoon and evening and night with a few breaks in between.

Shadow of the Colossus remake PS4 - Such a beautiful game that's sometimes let down by temperamental controls (not to the extent that it impacts your enjoyment of the game though).

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves remastered PS4 - A big improvement from Uncharted 1 with likeable characters, witty dialog and plenty of action.

God of War PS4 - An absolute masterpiece and a very different approach from previous games in the series. Definitely one of the defining games of this console generation.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception - Incredible voice acting along with a great storyline make this the best of the first 3.

What Remains of Edith Finch - I would never have played this if it hadn't been released as one of the free PSN games for May but am I glad that I did. I almost deleted it after the first 20 mins but then something clicked and the game really plays with your emotions. A thoroughly beautiful experience and one that I recommend especially if you already have it as one of your PSN games.

I decided to pick up my Vita again and finish some games over the next while.

The first one I completed was Bastion. It's a simple yet fun game that looks incredible on the Vita screen. It's an action game with different weapons you can collect and a narrator that speaks throughout the different things you, it's maybe a bit too easy. Worth the few euro though.

The Lego Movie Videogame is pretty self explanatory. The Vita version is different from the PS4 version in that it's a series of very short levels but as with all Lego games it's both easy and fun. I got the platinum trophy in this one.

Not completed but I'm finished with Super Meat Boy. Came back to it after a couple years and had to stop a couple levels from the end of the light world.

Game: Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
    Platform: PlayStation 2

I always regarded the "City Stories" series of GTA games to be overlooked and underappreciated. LCS is a top notch instalment with plenty going on in it. It doesn't do much in the way of innovation but you have to remember this was originally a PSP game, so it was fairly packed in terms of content.

My major complaint is the frame rate is not good, at all. It barely sticks to 30 and doesn't stay above 20 even when driving around. Even San Andreas had a more consistent frame rate than this and that was a bigger game.

Thankfully I can overlook it because the fun factor outweighs it, in my eyes.

Gonna be diving into Vice City Stories after this one

Finally bought and finished Iconoclasts. To be honest I wasn't expecting it to be great since it had such a long development period but I really enjoyed it.

    Dead Space

It's my second time playing it. Played it on PC previously. Good game. The last chapter was not nearly as bad as I remember it. I remember dragging that object for ages and having a bad time with enemies but I found it quite easy this time.

I bought Virginia in the previous PSN sale after a recommendation on Boards. It's a walking simulator with the story based around a new FBI agent investigating a missing persons case with her new partner, who's very much a Fox Mulder type. I was really enjoying it until the end when the story went a bit too ambiguous for my liking. Even reading online there are countless interpretations which is not something I'm a big fan of. It's well worth playing but prepare to be confused at the end. It's also a very easy platinum trophy.

Good game. I have been playing it on and off for a few months now. I only started this game as a couple of months ago I finished the first and it is such a good series that I was sorry I was so late playing them.

Game: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
    Platform: PlayStation 2

Unpopular opinion: Vice City Stories is better than Vice City....... mechanically, at least. Being the final game released in the "3D Era", long-overdue QOL improvements were made:
    • Trip Skip
    • Checkpoints During Vehicle Side-Missions
    • Buy Back your Weapons After you Die/Get Busted

I'm sure there were others, I just can't think of them as I write this. Storywise it was pretty bland, and Lance is way more annoying in this one (in Vice City, the sequel, he is much more laid back) and, of course, since it's set in the 80s, the soundtrack was top notch. I found earning money in the game to be one of the easiest the series has to offer (alongside GTA V).

My points are all over the place but I found this game to be more enjoyable to play than VC, apart from the plot.

    Very good instalment.

    Game: INSIDE
    Platform: PlayStation 4

This marks my second playthrough of the game itself. I have it beaten on both Xbox One and PS4 now.
Brilliant all the same but my opinion of its puzzles still stand - Limbo was much more challenging.

    100% on trophies as well.

I could have played through this on PS4 and gotten a few trophies but I was out of the house for a few days babysitting, so I brought the Switch and played that version.

Great puzzle-platformer, and very cynical in tone but artistic AF all the same. Very good game.

I finished my latest Artifex Mundi game called Noir Chronicles: City of Crime tonight. It follows the usual Artifex Mundi formula with puzzles, hidden object scenes, cheesy dialogue and terrible voice acting. I always enjoy them as a good easygoing way to relax.

One to add in the Switch section:

    PS4

Horizon: Zero Dawn - great, great game, really loved the story, the world and most of the gameplay. My type of gaming experience :D

    Nintendo Switch

Celeste - fairly difficult platformer; was thrilled/surprised to finish it without needing to resort to the 'easy mode' help (extra mid-air jumps, etc...) at any point. Didn't get all the collectables (have 100+ of the 175 strawberries I think) and probably won't go back, but was very enjoyable for what it was. And really suited the Switch's portability I think.

    Game: A Way Out
    Platform: PlayStation 4

Played through this with the other half. We both went back and got the Platinum trophy then after.

It wasn't amazing but it provided a good (albeit easy) co-op experience. Not very visually appealing though - the graphics were okay. Can't complain too much given the fact it's an EA Original IP.
The voice acting was atrocious, though. Of that I have no regret slamming.

I do recommend it, regardless, but keep in mind if you decide to get it, it can only be played in co-op (couch or online). There is no single player.

What's wrong with the game? Just not scary?
    Or buggy/badly written?

Would like to know, I love Cthulhu Mythos stuff but never hear good things about adaptations!

I got the platinum trophy in Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham. As with all Lego games, it's good fun and full of humour but the only challenge is the huge amount of collectibles you have to find if going for the platinum trophy.

The story starts off very well but once you reach the point where all the plot details should be coming together in a great finale, everything just starts to unravel. Once that happened I became much less tolerant of the bad optimization.

Then theres the voice acting, some characters were really good but then others just seemed really amateurish.
Theres multiple endings too, without spoiling anything, I hated the one I got and didn't think much of the others after looking them up but this is strictly a personal preference, theres people that will absolutely love the style of endings, just not for me.

    EDIT
To address the scariness, to it's credit the atmosphere the game creates is excellent, no reliance on jumpscares and the sense of dread at times is second to none

Game: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
    Platform: PlayStation 3

I got the MGS Legacy Collection last year and I had actually started it upon first getting it but I must've forgot to continue.

MGS2 is my baby. My all time favourite title from the series as a whole and one of my favourite games of all time.

It's funny: the first time I played this game, my cousin rented it from Global Video back when I was still in Scotland and I remember liking it but because it was my cousin's PS2 and because he was in charge, he hated it, and thus never let me play it :(

He wasn't a fan of the fixed camera perspective.

About a year later I managed to get it in Toys 'R' Us for my birthday a good few months later, and I remember hating it after a certain point because I found it too hard
(I got stuck at the part where you had to diffuse the bombs because I couldn't comprehend, in my 12 year-old brain, where "The Bottom of Strut A" was)
    .

I eventually took it to a friend's house and he got me past that point I was stuck at. From then on I fell more and more in love with the game as the story unfolded.

    This game had everything:

    Brilliant gameplay
Deep story (Like, so f*cking deep.......)
and visuals that I believe still hold up to this day.

The amount of times this game broke the fourth wall astonished me, especially towards the end, it just blew my mind.

A lot of people shy away from this series because of its heavy-duty plotline and reliance on long cutscenes and radio calls to tell its story.

I personally loved it, and still do. I've always enjoyed cutscenes in games if they are directed well and aren't too cringey and, while this game does have its blood-curdling levels of cringe moments (looking at you, Rose and Raiden), the overall presentation is brilliantly done.

There were also a few plot points and twists that I never noticed in my early days playing this that I understood as I got older, and I'm still learning a couple of things even now.

The lore of Metal Gear is fascinating to me, and it only really began when I played this.

If I had one complaint, and it's one that I will refer to this remaster, is I wish they patched in an option to pause the game during cutscenes. My adult life doesn't allow me to enjoy those things as long as I once could, so the inability to pause makes it hard to decide when is best to press further on in the game. Thankfully, since I know this game like the back of my hand, I know when to save the game and leave it. My best times to play this was during the night, uninterrupted.

Anyway, sorry for the overly long post. This game does this to me, I guess. I could talk about it all day.

    Game: Gunstar Heroes
    Platform: Nintendo Switch

Part of the Mega Drive Collection.

Not a huge fan of sidescrolling shooters, mainly because I'm shocking at them. But I stuck this one on easy and took advantage of the save-states. This one was actually quite fun. I liked the variety of the boss battles and the gameplay was very accessible (probably because I played it on easy lol)

    Good game.

    [PC]

    Borderlands 2 (DLC)

Commander Lilith and the fight for Sanctuary

Really good DLC reminded me why I loved the Borderlands series and I cannot wait for B3. Quite a bit to do including the side missions and all for free also. Looked amazing at 4k also.

    Dead Space 2

I have being playing this on and off for a while since I completed Dead Space (1). Second time playing it as I have previously played it on PC a few years ago. Great game overall. I will have to play the DLC as I have never played it before and then move onto Dead Space 3.

Game: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
    Platform: PlayStation 3

The game clocked my completion at over 14 hours, but it really took me less time because MGS3 still runs through your playtime even when you pause it.

I also made a hard attempt to get the Platinum trophy in a single playthrough. But one collectable trophy made that not happen. Raging.

Still, I enjoyed beating this game another time. Not sure if I'll jump into Peace Walker - it's the one solitary mainline instalment in the series (that Kojima deems important to him) I haven't played through.

    Dead Space 2: Severed (DLC)

Much of the same. Didn't take long to beat. I don't know if it is worth buying though as it has nothing to do with Dead Space 2's story.

I think it continues the story of the characters from Dead Space: Extraction

I played the original Red Johnson game a good few years ago on PS3 so when I saw the sequel on PS Now I thought I would give it a go. It's a narrative driven puzzle game but it's a frustrating one as many of the puzzles are not intuitive at all. I found myself stuck a few times had to look up parts of the game. I'm not sure I would recommend it as it was a bit of a slog to get through.

Finished Adventure Mode 100% on Crash Team Racing over the weekend. I struggled with many of the races the first time around, but once you go back around for the tokens/relics/gem cups, the races are actually surprisingly easy, and especially when you're more familiar with shortcuts. Platinum is pretty much out of the question though, those time trials against N.Tropy and N.Oxide can f*ck right off.

Also got the platinum for MK11 a few weeks back. Wasn't planning on going for it but saw I wasn't too far off it and didn't seem overly difficult so just grinded out the last few trophies for it. Will wait until more Kombat Pack fighters are released before dipping back into it again.

Completed the Borderlands 2 DLC which got me hooked back into the game, so mostly playing that.

    You should, it's fantastic.

I'm actually playing through the MSX Metal Gear games that are on the MGS3 subsistence release and thoroughly enjoying them despite the odd bit of jank. Still extremely playable and it's a pity most people think the god awful NES version is the real first Metal Gear game.

I also recommend the Gameboy Colour Metal Gear Solid game. Despite it being none canon it's the secret best Metal Gear.

Thankfully my first dive into the original Metal Gear was indeed those same MSX games on MGS3. I knew there were differences between those and the NES but had no idea what, until I watched AVGN's video on it - thoroughly entertaining.

I'll stick PW on the to-do and I'll have a look out for that GBC one. Ghost Babel, I think?

[PS. Came into the thread to say I went and got the Platinum trophy for MGS3. All I needed to do was shoot 2 Kerotans that I missed]

    Borderlands

Brilliant game. Played it before a few years ago on PC. Got it free with GWG on Xbox so said I will try it again. I actually started it a good while ago was around level 13 but got stuck into after playing the free DLC for Borderlands 2, it reminded me how good the series is. I completed every mission and side missions in the main game. I have the DLC's to play next.

Ghost Babel for it's Japanese release. It's just known as Metal Gear Solid in the west but fans differentiate it with the Ghost Babel moniker.

It's a fantastic game, just muscle through the awful puzzle at the start with the different colour cardboard boxes. Every Gameboy Colour game had to have a colour based puzzle as if colour in videogames was a novelty at the time.

Just saw you beat Gunstar Heroes as well on easy. My opinion is it's the best game on the megadrive. It's worth playing that game on Normal and Hard mode as it actually adds new attacks to bosses meaning you are only really getting the real game on Hard (you can play on expert as well.... but its too insane and only ups enemy numbers, HP and damage)

I'll have to find a way to get it on my NES/SNES Mini as I haven't played a Game Boy in 20 years. I'm sure I saw a guide on how to stick GBC games onto it, somewhere.

I'll certainly give it another bash on a higher difficulty at some stage. I have no intentions of leaving it in the dust. Though I get easily frustrated when a game becomes too ridiculous for me. As I said, sidescrolling shooters are not my strongest genre
I bought Ikaruga last year. Stupid idea, I just can't play that thing. I also made an attempt at Alien Soldier a couple of weeks ago and it was a nightmare :o

I really love the idea of the side-scrolling shooter, hence why I tried to get into so many of them, but I'm just horrendous at it.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,842 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I did get good enough to finish Ikaruga on 5 credits but it's a bastard hard game. Alien Soldier is a game I want to get into but it's insanely tough. I wouldn't mind the bosses being extremely tough but having to use the counter move to gain back very rapidly dwindling ammo supplies is beyond my skill level. I'll have to try it again.

I do love my side scrolling shooters but I'm rather good at them as I grew up with Contra Hard Corp and Gunstar Heroes.

Oh yeah, Contra - another series of games I'm shocking at. I bought the Contra Collection on Switch a few weeks ago. I just can't.....

    [PC]

    Fallout 4

Enjoyed it for what it was but felt like a rehash of Fallout 3. Was more work than anything by the end.

    Still on the list:

    Skyrim
    Kingdom Come
    Kerbal Space Program
    No Mans Sky

I probably won't tackle Skyrim or Kingdom Come til October. NMS, I'll probably wait for VR so guess I'll try to visit everything in KSP! :D

Borderlands: The Zombie island of Dr. Ned (DLC)

Good DLC. Was a bit frustrating at first trying to get a head shot to collect the brains and them damn spitting zombies but once I got the hang of it, it was fine.

Game: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
    Platform: PlayStation 3

My last gameplay beat was an hour and 10 minutes before I saw the end credits.

Yeah, the final back-to-back cutscenes of this game is over 70 minutes long......
The final chapter of this game is 30% gameplay/70% cutscenes.

I normally do not mind the cutscenes in any of these games, but I had almost forgotten how much MGS4 takes the biscuit with the sheer length of them.

It's my least favourite in all the MGS titles I have ever played, mainly because it heavily relies on nostalgia and, yeah I'll admit, way too many long cutscenes - 8 hours in total. But when there is gameplay, it is very well done.

No intent on insulting this game's goal in terms of storytelling too much, but I'm glad to be shot of it.

    Metal Gear

Played on the HD collection for PS3. Despite how old this game is and the platform it's a fantastic game and still very playable. The MSX Metal Gear is so much better than the awful NES version. Only issues are some of the information you need to beat the game is in the manual which isn't included so you need a FAQ.

Shadow of the Colossus remake PS4 - An all time classic.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves remastered PS4 - Loved this, an improvement over no.1 which was also good.
God of War PS4 - The game of this console generation.
    Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception - A cinematic masterpiece.
What Remains of Edith Finch - A beautiful and moving game.
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition PS4 - Absolutely amazing, a must buy and is often on sale.
Infamous Second Son - feel like a super hero. Good game but can get repetitive.

Borderlands: The Secret Armory of General Knoxx (DLC)

More of the same which is a good thing with different types of enemies. A lot more content in this DLC than the zombie island of doctor Ned.

    Game: Metal Gear Solid
    Platform: PlayStation

Can't get over how, after 21 years, this game still manages to hold up from a storytelling and visual standpoint. Gameplaywise it's a little janky, but that could be due to the fact I have just came out of playing MGS3 and then MGS4 back-to-back, so going back to this was a bit jarring at first.

Nevertheless it's still a fantastic game. This marks the third time I've ever beaten it.

The latter portion of the game was very tedious, with a lot of backtracking. Those who have played it knows what I'm talking about (PAL keys) and then I just got sloppy on the final two bosses and the very final portion of gameplay. About 10 continues were used, I was gettin' rusty.
    I deliberately went for the bad ending on this one, mainly for 2 reasons;

1: I wanted the stealth camo for when I decide to play it again in the future.
2: I actually preferred having Otacon with Snake at the end instead of Meryl. I can just pretend she's not dead :pac:

I'm going to jump into the remake (The Twin Snakes) after this one - never got to play it before. It'll be interesting to see what the differences are (since it uses the same engine that MGS2 used, I can only imagine it plays almost identical to that)

Metro 2033. Had it on the list for years, never got around to it. Man, I really enjoyed that. Loved the setting, the atmosphere, sound, general creepiness. Gameplay was pretty good, level design interesting and didn't stick to one gimmick for too long - action sequences didn't outlast themselves, and then segued into something different, be it a hub area, or a puzzle or whatever.

    Onto Metro: Last Light.
