Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I always like that colour on a w124 as it's and old colour, a vintage colour.

Would that etching change the focus of the lights? Perhaps they got LHD headlamps?

How is the focus determined on them?

Its a trick of the light. They are fog lights and all w/s/c124 cars have them there except the E500/500E. That car has been doing the rounds for quite a while which is a pity because its a lovely car. Its on a commission sale.

It says it’s sept 1991 for first registration, so probably would be €1200/1300 vrt on top?

Not like you could put it into storage up north either as God knows what fees in terms of duty/vrt charges with Brexit in September 2021....

Agreed - I think it makes sense, I think there may be a race to get as many cars across the sea as possible before 2021 ( although someone has pointed out, the EU taxes will have already been paid )

not sure if it would make sense to go to London and buy it, when you factor in everything.... you could just buy a vintage w126 500SEL over here with lower mileage thats vrt & nct'd already for €6750/7,000 approx

update: i just checked and the 500SEL i was thinking of is no longer on donedeal

There's a good MOT history to go with that 300SE. Good spec too with leather, cruise and aircon. Oil leak in the front isn't great news though. Could be a nice car

I like that colour too, not sure they got the darker brown correct though when respraying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,079 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

I like the colour too, but I think that actually stands against the car in the wider market. Not many people want to spend two grand on a car that will be mistaken for an old million mile German taxi.

Nice starter classic. Is that colour a legit colour scheme

The colour is but the car has been 'modernized' by fitting the later sill and door trims from 1989 onwards

Had this conversation with someone recently, and we ultimately agreed that the ZX was and will probably always be a bit neglected in wider French car circles. They're a really lovely car, and that particular example looks lovely, but I think it is a class larger and a generation later than what folks are really after (205 GTI, R5 GTT etc)

I had the pleasure of driving a few 205/309 1.9 gtis fairly hard, and they are truly a great drivers car. I'd still consider a ZX Volcane or a Xantia Activa though.

My parents are friends with a German Count who lives in Dublin, he had a proper full fat Lotus Carlton until only about 15 years ago or so. I still see him around now in the Touareg that he bought to replace the Lotus!

Looks like it was reupholstered in non-MB covers. Wonder why you'd do that if you went to the trouble of a full resto? Also, the bottom of it looks like it was painted with a brush rather than resprayed. Still worth a look for £5K

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,487 ✭✭✭KevRossi

I had a 164 Q4 when I lived in Germany years ago, sold it and went looking for something else. I couldn't stretch to buying a Lotus Omega, as I've always had a principle of never borrowing cash to buy a car. I was willing to break to rule for that one car but my then girlfriend convinced me not to borrow cash to buy it as 'Opel are crap and unreliable' (she had a Lancia Thema at the time - WTF?).

    I ended out with a W124 400E (US import) as I couldn't stretch to a 500E either.

Looks like ZV42812 which comes up as a 230, last sale date march 2015.

Super looking car but its a pity about the interior, even the door cards and
centre armrest in that strange criss cross pattern, doesn't work for me !

If you fancy an E23 project you can have this one on a starting bid of £8000

That is the correct reg. (UK reg A592 JCK - no export marker). Mileage discrepancy though.

When the skangers and chavs adopt a trend in their pimped out Golfs, you know it's time to move on. That quilted upholstery is one example. It's the same reason why cream leather is dead to me now.

Of course it doesn't have NCT on it, It's UK registered car, in the UK, with no export marker!

(It appears to me to have started life in the UK, had a holiday in Ireland, a haircut at some point, re-registered in the UK and is being sold in the UK, for GBP ;) )

Could very well be, didn't even think of that scenario! Why use a few (older) pics for the ad then with the Irish plates on though?

The haircut and the NCT site stating the vehicle has been scrapped would be major red flags for me though. The link now says the auction has ended and there were 2 bids. Surely this wasn't sold for anywhere near GBP5k, does anyone in here have access to the results?

Don't put any heed in the NCT site stating scrapped, that seems to be a default position if a vehicle has never entered their testing system, i.e. never had a test.
Rather like the test itself their website isn't really a paragon of efficiency....
