Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I figured that it must have been fairly coming down there alright Xenji. The sky looked very dark and threatening out that way.
Below a pic of some of that shower cloud over Castlebar direction at 15.05hrs today as seen from my own location to the east.

Thankfully rain stopped in NCD so we could walk to barber's for my son's haircut!

Plenty of dark clouds around but no more rain.

Edited: Raining lightly here again now.

There has been intense rain showers in north Donegal/Inishowen for the last 2 days.

Spells of sunshine in between, but when it rains, it really rains!

Always think the same. When you're coming in to land at DUB you can easily see all the way from the Mourne mountains to the tip of Wexford. Makes you realise how a tiny body of land we live on compared to the scale of weather systems yet the difference between e.g. Donegal and Wexford can be night and day for much of the year

When flying in at night and you're looking at the lights of Bray out of the left isle window and the lights of Holyhead out of the right isle window before meaningful descent.

It's only 92 km from Bray to Holyhead. Out in the middle of the sea ypu would only need to be at a height of just 170 m to see the shorelines of both places. Flying at say 7000 ft you could see Liverpool on one side and Athlone on the other (330 km apart).

Once again Dublin east coast better than expected. I would rate this a pretty good May here.

We’d a cloudy start then about an hour and a half of warm sunshine but the downpours have started now again.
Edit: by warm I mean 15-16 degrees.

Dry with good spells of sunshine coming through here in Castlebar. Nice sunny evening ahead as the showers move south and east.

A lot of times I read your posts and think how can we live in the same county!! Gone wholly dark here near Trim the past 2 hours, lashing at the min...

Another washout of a day persistent heavy showers black skies. 3 weeks now since we had a good day here.

Not a bad day. In between the showers when the sun pops out it's quite warm. The heavy showers are head wrecking though.

that's mad, in Dublin it has been mostly sunny all day and even feels hot in my sun trap back garden

Drove to Tramore turned around came home it was torrential down there.

Highly localised even in Dublin. This is the Dublin forecast.

The showers will be isolated in the east but more frequent in the west.

That’s the west and east of the county. Strange one.

Yep same here I NCD, I actually fell asleep on sun lounger as it was so warm in back garden, felt like I was on holiday.

I've done a big blitz on the wardrobe, the summer clothes are coming out!

Lovely sunny day in West Clare, bit of a breeze.

You could see the showers building as they headed inland, but here at the coast we seem to primarily get dry and sunny conditions.

    Raining again here.

Lovely sunny day here in north Galway no rain thank god

    Lovely day in East Clare.
Rained 10 minutes ago for 2 minutes.
Ran in the sleveless t shirt, always a good sign !!
My neighbour even got sunburnt out cutting the grass...

Not a bad day at all in South County Dublin.

Calm, dry, 15º and plenty of sun.

Went up the mountains for a walk and even there it kept sunny, calm and dry.

You can't ask for much more in Ireland in mid-May really.

    Nope. Not in weather/meteorological terms.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,941 ✭✭✭sporina

so what is with the weather this May? Like today for eg - blasting sun this morn then this avo thundery downpours - was crazy.. now sunny again.. and its not yet warm..

I don't rem May ever been like this...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,477 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

To me this is typical summer weather, except technically it's not summer yet it's usually a few degrees warmer and we usually get a period of calm in May/June before it goes to downpours, some sun, dark clouds, the type of weather you find it hard to make plans around.
I always associated May with calm weather and plenty of sunshine, but this year it looks like that isn't happening and we're just in the usual unsettled summer weather already.

This morning was nice here. It was sunny and bright but certainly not warm. This afternoon was another washout rained most of the afternoon some really thundery downpours. It’s stopped now the sun is out but the sky is very black around. 17 days in and May had been a disaster. Just saw the forecast after the news there. Awful looking forecast. More rain and strong winds for late Wednesday Thursday and into Friday.

If we don't get some nice weather come June maybe a protest outside Met Eireann would get the message across that it's just not good enough?

We got it too early last year !
I haven’t found may too bad tbh. It’s been reasonably dry and bright ? The wind has made it feel cool though at times no doubt though.
Hasnt made a difference to the young lad though. He has been in shorts since the sun came out in mid March :D

Ah no it hasn't been too bad, I have met people outside in the evenings though and it gets cold pretty fast. We just usually get a period of summery type weather in May, but hopefully it's just on hold for a bit.

well here in Cork its definitely not a typical May.. we've had sunny mornings then the sky blackens followed by thundery downpours.. 1st few weeks wer v windy too.. temp is lower than normal.. my Dad is 83 and as a farmer says he has never seen a May like it.. the grass isn't growing - its a problem for farmers.. so something is going on..

I would have thought that someone in this forum with meteorological knowledge would have some insight?

If you look at MT’s forecasts he talks about it being below normal on sun and temperature. And above normal on rain.

It didn’t feel that bad in Dublin though. Wonder if anyone is taking stats.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,142 ✭✭✭OldRio

Wet windy and cold May around these parts. Very little growth. 10 months of poor weather with the occasional day or two of sun.
If June follows the same trend?

    Leitrim.

Increasingly looking like the last few days of May will bring a significant improvement in the weather. Temperatures might at last get into the twenties.

Psycho day here again in Cork.. sun shine and blue skies this morn.. then the sky darkened wit a mass of navy thundery clouds.. then the downpours., thunder and lightening.. then sun.. then more of the thundery sort..

This is no ordinary rain.. its thundery.. and the weather changes rapidly.. crazy
